The paper describes different types of plane targets, the method for obtaining metal microballoons from Au, Ag, and Cu with diameters of 600–1200 μm and wall thickness of 5–20 μm, and spherical cascade and cannonball type targets.
In this paper we present main parameters of the thermonuclear fuel and relations connecting the thickness of an isothermal homogeneous cryolayer with gaseous microballoon parameters. A model of the temperature field calculation (the azimuthal temperature gradient and the temperature distribution) and the way of shaping it under practical experimental conditions by the contact-point method is presented. The temperature distribution calculation explains the “sag” effect observed in many experiments.
The paper reports on a method of producing spherical targets with a light ablator layer having a density of 0·2g/cm3 and a thickness 10μm. This method for obtaining polystyrene microballoons and polyethylene microballs works for hemispheres made from plastics and metals with diameters from 600 to 1200 μm and wall thicknesses from 10 to 50 μm. It also provides a way to assemble cascade targets.
