Residual herbicides are routinely applied to control troublesome weeds in pumpkin production. Fluridone and acetochlor, Groups 12 and 15 herbicides, respectively, provide broad-spectrum PRE weed control. Field research was conducted in Virginia and New Jersey to evaluate pumpkin tolerance and weed control to PRE herbicides. Treatments consisted of fomesafen at two rates, ethalfluralin, clomazone, halosulfuron, fluridone, S-metolachlor, acetochlor emulsifiable concentrate (EC), acetochlor microencapsulated (ME), and no herbicide. At one site, fluridone, acetochlor EC, acetochlor ME, and halosulfuron injured pumpkin 81%, 39%, 34%, and 35%, respectively, at 14 d after planting (DAP); crop injury at the second site was 40%, 8%, 19%, and 33%, respectively. Differences in injury between the two sites may have been due to the amount and timing of rainfall after herbicides were applied. Fluridone provided 91% control of ivyleaf morningglory and 100% control of common ragweed at 28 DAP. Acetochlor EC controlled redroot pigweed 100%. Pumpkin treated with S-metolachlor produced the most yield (10,764 fruits ha–1) despite broadcasting over the planted row; labeling requires a directed application to row-middles. A separate study specifically evaluated fluridone applied PRE at 42, 84, 126, 168, 252, 336, and 672 g ai ha–1. Fluridone resulted in pumpkin injury ≥95% when applied at rates of ≥168 g ai ha–1; significant yield loss was noted when the herbicide was applied at rates >42 g ai ha–1. We concluded that fluridone and acetochlor formulations are unacceptable candidates for pumpkin production.

Weed management programs in ‘Superior’ potato with PRE and POST rimsulfuron treatments were investigated during 1992, 1993, and 1994 in Virginia on a State sandy loam soil. Common ragweed control by PRE combinations of metolachlor with linuron or metribuzin was higher when treatments included PRE or POST rimsulfuron. Common lambsquarters control was 93 to 96% by treatments that included POST rimsulfuron. In the absence of PRE herbicides, POST applications of 35 g ai/ha rimsulfuron plus 280 g ai/ha metribuzin controlled weeds comparable to sequential applications of this combination. Potato recovered from occasional terminal leaf chlorosis caused by rimsulfuron, rimsulfuron plus metribuzin, and organophosphate insecticides combined POST with rimsulfuron plus metribuzin. These studies demonstrate that rimsulfuron can be a useful component of weed management programs that include metolachlor, linuron, and metribuzin.

The effects of chlorimuron, imazaquin, imazethapyr, nicosulfuron, primisulfuron, and thifensulfuron were evaluated on a population of smooth pigweed in Painter, VA with no history of treatment with acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibitor herbicides. Imazethapyr and nicosulfuron gave the greatest smooth pigweed control, and subsequently were used in field and greenhouse studies to investigate susceptibility of smooth pigweed and livid amaranth populations to ALS-inhibitor herbicides. Approximately 5 million smooth pigweed plants from Painter were treated with imazethapyr or nicosulfuron from 1992 to 1994 and no ALS-inhibitor-resistant plants were identified. In the greenhouse, the response of smooth pigweed from Painter, VA, Marion, MD, and Oak Hall, VA and livid amaranth from Warren County, NJ to imazaquin or imazethapyr and nicosulfuron was investigated. Smooth pigweed from Marion and Oak Hall and livid amaranth from NJ had histories of treatment with ALS-inhibitors. Painter smooth pigweed control was 81 to 97% by imazethapyr and nicosulfuron while control of the Marion and Oak Hall populations was 3 and 18% by imazaquin at 560 and 1120 g ai/ha, respectively, and control by nicosulfuron at 35 g ai/ha was 50 to 73%. Control of livid amaranth from Warren County, NJ was 8 to 15% by imazethapyr at 560 g ai/ha, and was 30 to 58% by nicosulfuron at 35 g/ha.

Field studies were conducted for 4 yr to investigate the effects of tillage and herbicide programs on weed control and wheat (Triticum aestivum L. ‘Potomac’ in 1981 and ‘Wheeler’ from 1982 to 1984) grain yields in a wheat-soy bean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] double-crop rotation. Predominant weed species were common chickweed [Stellaria media (L.) Vill. # STEME], corn chamomile (Anthemis arvensis L. # ANTAR), and annual bluegrass (Poa annua L. # POAAN) at the onset of research and cheat (Bromus secalinus L. # BROSE) and soft brome (Bromus mollis L. # BROMO) at the conclusion of the study. Control of all species was excellent with conventional tillage and no-till plus nonselective herbicides but was significantly less with no-till without nonselective herbicides and with minimum tillage. After 4 yr, maximum wheat grain yields were significantly higher in conventional- than in minimum- or no-till systems.

In 1992 and 1993, rimsulfuron alone at 17, 35, and 70 g ai/ha, and at 35 g/ha plus metribuzin at 280 g ai/ha, respectively, was evaluated PRE and POST for weed control in potato. Rimsulfuron at 35 g/ha PRE and POST controlled common lambsquarters and giant foxtail and when combined with 280 g/ha metribuzin, controlled common ragweed and jimsonweed. Rimsulfuron and rimsulfuron with metribuzin caused slight to moderate chlorosis in new terminal growth of potato but chlorosis disappeared within 3 wk. Potato height, tuber yields, and tuber quality were not affected by rimsulfuron alone or with metribuzin.

Consecutive annual applications of alachlor [2-chloro-N-(2,6-diethylphenyl)-N-(methoxymethyl)acetamide] and metolachlor [2-chloro-N-(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)-N-(2-methoxy-1-methylethyl)acetamide] were made to continuous no-till corn (Zea mays L. ‘Pioneer 3184’ in 1982 and 1983, ‘Pioneer 3744’ in 1984, and ‘Pioneer 3378’ in 1985 to 1987). In a 5-yr study, control of the dominant annual grass species, large crabgrass [Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop. # DIGSA], by alachlor declined to less than 50% by the fifth year. Control of large crabgrass by metolachlor remained greater than 80% throughout the study but metolachlor allowed the establishment of a greater fall panicum (Panicum dichotomiflorum Michx. # PANDI) population in this and an additional 3-yr study than in chloroacetamide-free checks. In the 3-yr study in which giant foxtail (Setaria faberi Herrm. # SETFA) was dominant, annual applications of metolachlor and a microencapsulated formulation of alachlor provided better control in the second year than the emulsifiable concentrate formulation of alachlor, but formulation differences diminished in the third year.

Following six consecutive annual applications of imazaquin in combination with trifluralin or pendimethalin to several soybean fields on the Delmarva Peninsula, unacceptable smooth pigweed control was observed. Field and greenhouse studies were conducted to determine if this population of smooth pigweed was resistant to imazaquin and other herbicides. In field research, imazaquin and imazethapyr gave complete control of the susceptible (S) population while providing no control of the resistant (R) population; pyrithiobac controlled 99 and 90% of the R and S populations, respectively. Pendimethalin, metribuzin, MON-12000, and flumiclorac gave less than 75% control of both S and R populations. Chlorimuron, primisulfuron, CGA-152005, and lactofen gave above 75% control, and thifensulfuron and nicosulfuron gave above 90% control of both S and R populations. Seeds were collected from the R and S smooth pigweed populations for research in the greenhouse. Greenhouse studies confirmed high levels of resistance to imazaquin and imazethapyr and low levels of cross-resistance to rimsulfuron and chlorimuron in the R population. Susceptibility of the R population to nicosulfuron, thifensulfuron, pyrithiobac, and pendimethalin was comparable to that of the S population.

In field studies in 1991, 1992, and 1993, rimsulfuron at 26 and 35 g ai/ha, sequentially at 26 g/ha, at 26 g/ha plus metribuzin at 280 g ai/ha, and metribuzin at 280 g/ha were evaluated POST for weed control in transplanted ‘Agriset’ tomato. Common lambsquarters was controlled by rimsulfuron at 35 g/ha. Rimsulfuron plus metribuzin gave consistent control of common ragweed, but jimsonweed control was inconsistent and goosegrass control was generally low. Rimsulfuron treatments caused slight (< 12%) temporary injury to new terminal growth of tomato. Yield of tomato fruit was consistently high in the metribuzin, metribuzin plus rimsulfuron, and rimsulfuron sequential treatments. In greenhouse studies, giant foxtail and large crabgrass control by rimsulfuron was above 95 and 85%, respectively, but goosegrass was not controlled. Height of four tomato cultivars was not reduced, but dry weight of ‘Floradade’ and ‘Sunbeam’ was reduced by rimsulfuron.

Field studies were conducted in 1987 and 1988 to investigate the control of common lambsquarters in pea and snap bean following preplant incorporated, preemergence, and postemergence applications of imazethapyr at 36 to 69 g ai/ha. The residual activity of imazethapyr on rotational crops of sweet corn, grain sorghum, and cucumber was evaluated. All rates of imazethapyr provided good (>80% initially) control of common lambsquarters. Although imazethapyr caused some injury to both pea and snap bean, yields were not reduced except for snap bean following postemergence applications. Imazethapyr residues resulting from the applications of 36 to 69 g/ha caused visible injury and fresh weight reductions to all three rotational crops.

In field studies conducted in 1984, 1985, and 1986, annual grass control by a microencapsulated (ME) formulation of alachlor [2-chloro-N-(2,6-diethylphenyl)-N-(methoxymethyl)acetamide] generally was greater than that by the emulsifiable concentrate (EC) in no-till and was comparable to EC-alachlor in conventionally tilled corn (Zea mays L.) and soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]. In 1986, ME-metolachlor [2-chloro-N-(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)-N-(2-methoxy-1-methylethyl)acetamide] controlled annual grass similar to EC-metolachlor. In greenhouse studies, shoot height and fresh weight of barnyardgrass [Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv. # ECHCG] sown in pots and treated with ME-alachlor was significantly greater than that treated with EC-alachlor. Soybean straw on the soil surface did not affect the differences between alachlor formulations in the greenhouse.

Field studies were conducted for 3 yr to determine the foliar activity of acifluorfen {5-[2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy]-2-nitrobenzoic acid} for control of common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L. # CHEAL) in snap beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L. ‘Provider’ in 1983 and 1985 and ‘Green Crop’ in 1984). Control of 1 to 7 cm tall common lambsquarters varied between 75 and 100% with 0.28 kg ai/ha acifluorfen and frequently increased linearly with increases in acifluorfen rates to 0.84 kg/ha. Snap bean injury occurred each year and in 1985 was influenced by acifluorfen rate, stage of snap bean growth, and surfactant. Snap bean yields in 1983 were reduced linearly with increases in acifluorfen rates and in 1985 were reduced more from applications at the 1- to 2-trifoliolate leaf stage than at the 4- to 8-trifoliolate leaf stage. In the greenhouse, reductions in snap bean height from acifluorfen were related to application timing, surfactant and cultivar. Fresh weight reduction of snap beans was highest with the cultivar ‘Green Crop’ but was increased to both cultivars by early application timing and the addition of surfactant to the spray mix.

Efficacy of several acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides was evaluated for yellow nutsedge control over a 3-yr period on a State sandy loam and in the greenhouse. Herbicides were applied POST to yellow nutsedge at actual or anticipated commercial rates. Yellow nutsedge control was above 77% from MON 12000 and chlorimuron. Control ranged from 41 to 89% from primisulfuron, pyrithiobac, and rimsulfuron. Control from nicosulfuron and imazethapyr was 58% or less while thifensulfuron and CGA-152005 had almost no activity on yellow nutsedge. In greenhouse studies, MON 12000 controlled yellow nutsedge better than did chlorimuron, and imazethapyr gave better control than in the field.

Field studies were conducted for 4 yr with HOE-39866 [ammonium-(3-amino-3-carboxypropyl)-methylphosphinate] and for 2 yr with SC-0224 (trimethylsulfonium carboxymethylaminomethylphosphonate) to compare foliar activities with those of paraquat (1,1’-dimethyl-4,4’-bipyridinium ion) and glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] in no-till corn (Zea mays L. ‘Pioneer 3320’ in 1981 and ‘Pioneer 3184’ in 1982 and 1983). Rates evaluated were 0.6 to 1.7 kg ai/ha for all herbicides except paraquat which was included at 0.3 and 0.6 kg ai/ha. Control of rye (Secale cereale L.) was excellent at all rates with SC-0224, paraquat, and glyphosate, but HOE-39866 was effective only when combined with residual herbicides. All four herbicides provided good initial control of horseweed [Conyza canadensis (L.) Cronq., ♯ ERICA], but recovery following paraquat application was extensive. Combinations of HOE-39866, SC-0224, and glyphosate at 0.6 kg/ha with atrazine [2-chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-(isopropylamino)-s-triazine] at 1.1 to 1.7 kg ai/ha + metolachlor [2-chloro-N-(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)-N-(2-methoxy-1-methylethyl)acetamide] at 1.7 kg ai/ha produced antagonistic responses against rye and sometimes horseweed. In 1983, the combination of SC-0224 + residual herbicides provided significantly better control of rye and horseweed 8 days after treatment than the combination of glyphosate + residual herbicides.

In field studies, in 1993, 1994, and 1995, clomazone at 390 g ai/ha and rimsulfuron at 35 g ai/ha were evaluated preplant incorporated (PPI) and postemergence (POST), respectively, for weed control and crop response in transplanted ‘Keystone RG3’ bell pepper. Clomazone did not injure bell pepper. Common lambsquarters and jimsonweed control was 77 to 95% by clomazone treatments but was variable by rimsulfuron treatments at 41 to 93% common lambsquarters control and 42 to 68% jimsonweed control; common ragweed control by both herbicides was unacceptable. Injury by rimsulfuron to bell pepper in the field was 19 to 47% at 21 DAT. In the greenhouse, injury to Keystone RG3 and three additional bell pepper varieties, ‘Camelot,’ ‘Jupiter,’ and ‘Memphis’ was similar at 44 to 62% by rimsulfuron at 17 to 35 g/ha POST, and bell pepper had lower height and dry weight than untreated controls. In the greenhouse, jimsonweed control was below 49% and black nightshade control was below 23% by 17 to 35 g/ha rimsulfuron. In these studies, clomazone controlled common lambsquarters and jimsonweed without injury to bell pepper. The solanaceous weeds treated in this study were not well controlled by rimsulfuron, and bell pepper was not sufficiently tolerant to rimsulfuron to permit its use in this crop.

Field experiments were conducted in 2000 and 2001 near Painter, VA, to evaluate the potential of sulfentrazone for use in potato. Sulfentrazone was applied at 0.11, 0.14, 0.21, and 0.28 kg ai/ha preemergence (PRE) alone or in combination with metolachlor or metribuzin, or at emergence (AT EMERG) of potato to simulate a delayed PRE application where the herbicide would come into contact with potato foliage. Potato injury from sulfentrazone PRE at rates of up to 0.21 kg/ha was generally similar to injury from metribuzin, metolachlor, or metribuzin plus metolachlor PRE. However, AT EMERG applications resulted in excessive injury that ranged from 60 to 86%. AT EMERG applications also caused decreased potato height and alterations in potato-flowering patterns. Sulfentrazone at either application timing controlled common lambsquarters at least 98% even at the lowest rates and was more effective than metribuzin or metolachlor alone. Higher rates of sulfentrazone (0.28 kg/ha) also controlled goosegrass and large crabgrass. However, sulfentrazone at 0.28 kg/ha controlled common ragweed only 58%. Total potato yield and grade with sulfentrazone PRE applications were similar to those of potato treated with metribuzin, metolachlor, or metribuzin plus metolachlor in both years. Potato injury from AT EMERG applications of sulfentrazone plus metolachlor decreased total potato yield and caused changes in the grade distribution of B-size, small A–size, and extra-large potato in 2000.

The failure of glyphosate to control all weeds throughout the entire growing season has sometimes prompted growers to use herbicides other than glyphosate on glyphosate-resistant soybean. Field studies were conducted in 1999 and 2000 to investigate potential crop injury by several herbicides in glyphosate-resistant soybean and to determine the relationships between soybean maturity group, planting date, and herbicide treatment on soybean injury, leaf area index (LAI), and yield. Glyphosate-resistant soybean generally recovered from early-season herbicide injury and LAI reductions; however, some treatments reduced yield. Yield reductions were more common in double-crop soybean than in full-season soybean. In full-season soybean, most yield reductions occurred in the early-maturing ‘RT-386’ cultivar. These yield reductions may be attributed to reduced developmental periods associated with early-maturing cultivars and double-crop soybean that often lead to reduced vegetative growth and limited LAI. Reductions in LAI by some herbicide treatments were not necessarily indicative of yield loss. Further yield reductions associated with herbicide applications occurred, although soybean sometimes produced leaf area exceeding the critical LAI level of 3.5 to 4.0, which is the minimum LAI needed for soybean to achieve maximum yield. Therefore, LAI response to herbicide treatments does not always accurately indicate the response of glyphosate-resistant soybean yield to herbicides.

Field experiments were conducted on the Eastern Shore of Virginia from 1999 to 2001 to evaluate the effects of tank mixture applications of isopropylamine or trimethylsulfonium salts of glyphosate with two liquid formulations of manganese (Mn lignin or Mn chelate) on spray solution pH and weed control in glyphosate-resistant soybean. Additions of manganese to herbicide solutions resulted in a reduction in the acidifying effects of the herbicides as well as in the control of common lambsquarters, large crabgrass, morningglory spp., and smooth pigweed. Reduced control caused by manganese could be overcome with higher rates of the herbicides on some species, but reduced control of common lambsquarters was seen when manganese was included with any herbicide application rate. For most species, Mn chelate caused a greater reduction in control than did Mn lignin. Although manganese caused significant decreases in weed control, soybean yield was not influenced by glyphosate salt, application rate, or manganese. Reduced weed control caused by the addition of manganese to herbicide solutions may be due to the complexing of the herbicide formulations, which could result in the formation of insoluble salt complexes that are not readily absorbed through the plant cuticle, resulting in decreased glyphosate phytotoxicity.

Field experiments were conducted in 1999, 2000, and 2001 to investigate PRE and POST applications of halosulfuron-methyl in combination with clomazone plus ethalfluralin for control of sedge and smooth pigweed in summer squash. Halosulfuron was applied PRE or POST to summer squash at 9, 18, or 27 g ai/ha in combination with a PRE application of clomazone at 175 g ai/ha plus ethalfluralin at 630 g ai/ha. Smooth pigweed control by addition of halosulfuron at 18 and 27 g/ha in combination with clomazone plus ethalfluralin PRE was greater than 89% independent of application method. Yellow nutsedge control was greater than 83% with POST applications of halosulfuron at 18 and 27 g/ha in combination with clomazone plus ethalfluralin PRE. Yellow nutsedge control was greater than 60% from all POST halosulfuron applications at 9, 18, or 27 g/ha in the greenhouse. In a separate field study without ethalfluralin PRE, rice flatsedge control was more than 85% from halosulfuron applied POST at 18 and 27 g/ha. Yellow summer squash and zucchini squash were injured as much as 52 and 47%, respectively, from inclusion of halosulfuron PRE or POST at 27 g/ha in treatments. Summer squash yields were generally not affected by halosulfuron rate, and were comparable to or higher than summer squash treated by only the mixture of clomazone plus ethalfluralin. In these studies, summer squash were injured by halosulfuron applied at 9 to 27 g/ha PRE or POST, yet rapidly recovered, making this herbicide acceptable for use in combination with clomazone and ethalfluralin for controlling several common weed species.

Greenhouse experiments were conducted to evaluate the response to halosulfuron of several smooth pigweed populations that had been shown to be resistant to acetolactate synthase (ALS, EC 2.2.1.6)-inihibiting herbicides. Five ALS-resistant smooth pigweed populations (R1, R2, R3, R4, and R5) and one susceptible (S) population were treated with halosulfuron POST at 0.27, 2.7, 27, 270, and 2,700 g ai/ha. Percentage injury and dry weight were used to determine resistance of smooth pigweed populations to halosulfuron. Populations of smooth pigweed with previous reports of resistance to ALS-inhibiting herbicides showed varying degrees of resistance to halosulfuron compared with the susceptible population. Concentrations of halosulfuron required to reduce ALS-resistant smooth pigweed dry weights 50% were 2 to 12-fold higher than that of the susceptible population. One population, designated R2, had increased resistance to halosulfuron applications, requiring 97 g/ha halosulfuron to reduce shoot dry weight 50% compared with only 8 g/ha for S. Our results show that populations of smooth pigweed with a history of ALS-inhibiting resistance can have differing degrees of resistance to halosulfuron.
