Trailing-edge serrations inspired by owls are capable of reducing broadband noise. In this study, the wall-resolved large-eddy simulations (LES) are carried out on the flow over NACA-0012 airfoil with additional serrated trailing edges. The computations are conducted with the high-order flux reconstruction method on unstructured meshes. Three kinds of serrations with different lengths are studied and compared with the straight trailing-edge case, and all three types of serration achieved a certain degree of noise reduction. Presently, the medium-length serration achieves the best noise reduction effect. The maximum decrease of overall sound pressure level is approximately 2.4 dB, implying that the length of serration has a substantial impact on the noise reduction effect. The serration has no significant effect on the upstream turbulence statistics, but it changes the flow structure near the serration, such as inducing side vortex pairs attached to the serration edges. Moreover, dynamic mode decomposition shows that the pressure structures vary with the serration length. For the most unstable hydrodynamic wave, the spanwise coherence of the mode structure of pressure in the upstream boundary layer is weakened. In addition, serrations can redistribute the dipole sources on the surfaces of airfoil and serrations. The destructive interference is enhanced to some extent, which is favourable for noise reduction. In contrast with LES simulations, the pure dipole analysis shows that the longest serration case seems to be the best. Furthermore, a recently developed noise theory is used to evaluate the influence of serrations on the flow noise sources qualitatively and quantitatively. It is found that the serrations can mitigate noise source intensity near the serration edges but increase the source intensity in the near wake. The combined effect of serration on the dipole source and flow noise source determines the overall noise reduction effect. To conclude, destructive interference plays a primary role in suppressing noise radiation by serrated trailing edges, and the dual effect of flow noise sources should be considered in future serration designs. As the influence of turbulence structure will make it more difficult to find the optimal serration parameters, the position of high-fidelity simulation will become increasingly important.

Mars exploration motivates the search for extraterrestrial life, the development of space technologies, and the design of human missions and habitations. Here, we seek new insights and pose unresolved questions relating to the natural history of Mars, habitability, robotic and human exploration, planetary protection, and the impacts on human society. Key observations and findings include:

1. – high escape rates of early Mars' atmosphere, including loss of water, impact present-day habitability;

2. – putative fossils on Mars will likely be ambiguous biomarkers for life;

3. – microbial contamination resulting from human habitation is unavoidable; and

4. – based on Mars' current planetary protection category, robotic payload(s) should characterize the local martian environment for any life-forms prior to human habitation.

Some of the outstanding questions are:

1. – which interpretation of the hemispheric dichotomy of the planet is correct;

2. – to what degree did deep-penetrating faults transport subsurface liquids to Mars' surface;

3. – in what abundance are carbonates formed by atmospheric processes;

4. – what properties of martian meteorites could be used to constrain their source locations;

5. – the origin(s) of organic macromolecules;

6. – was/is Mars inhabited;

7. – how can missions designed to uncover microbial activity in the subsurface eliminate potential false positives caused by microbial contaminants from Earth;

8. – how can we ensure that humans and microbes form a stable and benign biosphere; and

9. – should humans relate to putative extraterrestrial life from a biocentric viewpoint (preservation of all biology), or anthropocentric viewpoint of expanding habitation of space?

Studies of Mars' evolution can shed light on the habitability of extrasolar planets. In addition, Mars exploration can drive future policy developments and confirm (or put into question) the feasibility and/or extent of human habitability of space.

The mvClaim package in R provides flexible modelling frameworks for multivariate insurance claim severity modelling. The current version of the package implements a parsimonious mixture of experts (MoE) model family with bivariate gamma distributions, as introduced in Hu et al., and a finite mixture of copula regressions within the MoE framework as in Hu & O’Hagan. This paper presents the modelling approach theory briefly and the usage of the models in the package in detail. This package is hosted on GitHub at https://github.com/senhu/.

Spatial analysis ranges from simple univariate descriptive statistics to complex multivariate analyses and is typically used to investigate spatial patterns or to identify spatially linked consumer behaviours in insurance. This paper investigates if the incorporation of publicly available spatially linked demographic census data at population level is useful in modelling customers’ lapse behaviour (i.e. stopping payment of premiums) in life insurance policies, based on data provided by an insurance company in Ireland. From the insurance company’s perspective, identifying and assessing such lapsing risks in advance permit engagement to prevent such incidents, saving money by re-evaluating customer acquisition channels and improving capital reserve calculation and preparation. Incorporating spatial analysis in lapse modelling is expected to improve lapse prediction. Therefore, a hybrid approach to lapse prediction is proposed – spatial clustering using census data is used to reveal the underlying spatial structure of customers of the Irish life insurer, in conjunction with traditional statistical models for lapse prediction based on the company data. The primary contribution of this work is to consider the spatial characteristics of customers for life insurance lapse behaviour, via the integration of reliable government provided census demographics, which has not been considered previously in actuarial literature. Company decision-makers can use the insights gleaned from this analysis to identify customer subsets to target with personalized promotions to reduce lapse rates, and to reduce overall company risk.

It is known that the minimal 3-spheres of CR type with constant sectional curvature have been classified explicitly, and also that the weakly Lagrangian case has been studied. In this paper, we provide some examples of minimal 3-spheres with constant curvature in the complex projective space, which are neither of CR type nor weakly Lagrangian, and give the adapted frame of a minimal 3-sphere of CR type with constant sectional curvature.

To date, there has been little improvement in cryopreservation of bull sperm due to lack of understanding of the freezing mechanisms. Therefore, this study set out to investigate expression levels of fertility-associated proteins in bull sperm, and in particular the relationship between the 90 kDa heat-shock protein (HSP90) and the sperm characteristics after freezing–thawing. Semen was collected from eight Holstein bulls by artificial vagina. Characteristics of these fresh semen, including sperm motility, morphology, viability and concentration, were evaluated. Sperm quality was also assessed after freezing–thawing. Eight ejaculates were divided into two groups based on freezing resistance and sperm motility. Sperm proteins were extracted and sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) analysis and western blotting were performed. SDS-PAGE results showed that there was substantial diversity in 90 kDa proteins in the frozen–thawed sperm and HSP90 was confirmed as one of the 90 kDa proteins by western blot. This study indicated that HSP90 expression correlated positively with sperm quality. The amount of expressed 90 kDa proteins in the high freezing resistance (HFR) group was significantly higher than that in the low freezing resistance (LFR) group (P < 0.05). Thus, higher expression of HSP90 could probably lead to the higher motility and freezing resistance of sperm found after freezing–thawing. Therefore, we concluded that level of HSP90 expression could be used to predict reliably and simply the freezing resistance of bull sperm.
