As the IAU heads towards its second century, many changes have simultaneously transformed Astronomy and the human condition world-wide. Amid the amazing recent discoveries of exoplanets, primeval galaxies, and gravitational radiation, the human condition on Earth has become blazingly interconnected, yet beset with ever-increasing problems of over-population, pollution, and never-ending wars. Fossil-fueled global climate change has begun to yield perilous consequences. And the displacement of people from war-torn nations has reached levels not seen since World War II.

Background: Adult leg length is influenced by nutrition in the first few years of life. Adult head circumference is an indicator of brain growth. There is a limited literature linking short legs and small skulls to an increased risk for cognitive impairment and dementia in late life.

Methods: One phase cross-sectional surveys were carried out of all residents aged over 65 years in 11 catchment areas in China, India, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Mexico and Peru (n = 14,960). The cross-culturally validated 10/66 dementia diagnosis, and a sociodemographic and risk factor questionnaire were administered to all participants, and anthropometric measures taken. Poisson regression was used to calculate prevalence ratios for the effect of leg length and skull circumference upon 10/66 dementia, controlling for age, gender, education and family history of dementia.

Results: The pooled meta-analyzed fixed effect for leg length (highest vs. lowest quarter) was 0.82 (95% CI, 0.68–0.98) and for skull circumference 0.75 (95% CI, 0.63–0.89). While point estimates varied between sites, the proportion of the variability attributable to heterogeneity between studies as opposed to sampling error (I2) was 0% for leg length and 22% for skull circumference. The effects were independent and not mediated by family history of dementia. The effect of skull circumference was not modified by educational level or gender, and the effect of leg length was not modified by gender.

Conclusions: Since leg length and skull circumference are said to remain stable throughout adulthood into old age, reverse causality is an unlikely explanation for the findings. Early life nutritional programming, as well as neurodevelopment may protect against neurodegeneration.

Elemental diets are associated with intestinal atrophy and reduced intestinal integrity. Growth factors such as keratinocyte growth factor (KGF) and epidermal growth factor (EGF) have considerable potential for the therapeutic reversal of such atrophy and may have greater actions if given in combination. We examined the effects of recombinant human KGF (rHuKGF), EGF and their combination on tissue mass, cell proliferation and crypt fission throughout the intestine of mice fed elemental diets. rHuKGF significantly increased the relative wet weight of the intestine, with EGF having a lesser effect. Cell proliferation of the stomach, small intestine and colon were significantly increased by rHuKGF, but EGF only increased proliferation in the small intestine. Crypt fission in the small intestine and colon was significantly decreased by rHuKGF. An interactive effect of rHuKGF and EGF on the weight of stomach and the proliferation of the fundus and antrum was observed. Moreover, an interactive effect of the agents was also seen on crypt fission in the colon. We concluded that (1) rHuKGF and EGF have significant trophic effects on the stomach, small intestine and colon, (2) these actions vary between different sites in the gastrointestinal tract, and (3) interactive effects occur. A nonhydrolytic sol‐gel route based on the condensation between chlorides and oxygen donors such as ethers and alkoxides is presented. Four examples, silica, alumina, titania and binary oxides in the Al/Si system show that this is a general route. The mechanism of this condensation is completely different from the one of classical sol‐gel process, since it implies nucleophilic substitution at the carbon center instead of the metal center. As a consequence, the differences in reactivity between different metals are reduced. In addition, the structure of the precursors may be retained in the gel. Thus, the nonhydrolytic sol‐gel process is very efficient for the preparation of homogeneous bicomponent oxides. Futhermore, nonhydrated gels are formed, which allowed us to prepare amorphous aluminas with high surface areas.

A nonhydrolytic sol-gel route to aluminosilicates is proposed which avoids the problems associated with different hydrolysis rates for the precursors. Two pre-mullite gels (Al2O3/SiO2=3/2) were prepared in two different ways. The conversion to mullite was studied as a probe for chemical homogeneity. The results indicate that a monophasic precursor (i.e. homogeneous at the atomic level) may be easily obtained by etherolysis of a mixture of SiCl4 and AlCl3.

Fifteen 1: 250000 and one 1: 1000 000 scale Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) image mosaic maps are currently being produced of the West Antarctic ice streams on the Shirase and Siple Coasts. Landsat TM images were acquired between 1984 and 1990 in an area bounded approximately by 78°-82.5°S and 120°- 160° W. Landsat TM bands 2, 3 and 4 were combined to produce a single band, thereby maximizing data content and improving the signal-to-noise ratio. The summed single band was processed with a combination of high- and low-pass filters to remove longitudinal striping and normalize solar elevation-angle effects. The images were mosaicked and transformed to a Lambert conformal conic projection using a cubic-convolution algorithm. The projection transformation was controled with ten weighted geodetic ground-control points and internal image-to-image pass points with annotation of major glaciological features. The image maps are being published in two formats: conventional printed map sheets and on a CD-ROM.
