The Altar Stone at Stonehenge in Wiltshire, UK, is enigmatic in that it differs markedly from the other bluestones. It is a grey–green, micaceous sandstone and has been considered to be derived from the Old Red Sandstone sequences of South Wales. Previous studies, however, have been based on presumed derived fragments (debitage) that have been identified visually as coming from the Altar Stone. Portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) analyses were conducted on these fragments (ex situ) as well as on the Altar Stone (in situ). Light elements (Z<37) in the Altar Stone analyses, performed after a night of heavy rain, were affected by surface and pore water that attenuate low energy X-rays, however the dry analyses of debitage fragments produced data for a full suite of elements. High Z elements, including Zr, Nb, Sr, Pb, Th and U, all occupy the same compositional space in the Altar Stone and debitage fragments, and are statistically indistinguishable, indicating the fragments are derived from the Altar Stone. Barium compares very closely between the debitage and Altar Stone, with differences being related to variable baryte distribution in the Altar Stone, limited accessibility of its surface for analysis, and probably to surface weathering.

A notable feature of the Altar Stone sandstone is the presence of baryte (up to 0.8 modal%), manifest as relatively high Ba in both the debitage and the Altar Stone. These high Ba contents are in marked contrast with those in a small set of Old Red Sandstone field samples, analysed alongside the Altar Stone and debitage fragments, raising the possibility that the Altar Stone may not have been sourced from the Old Red Sandstone sequences of Wales. This high Ba ‘fingerprint’, related to the presence of baryte, may provide a rapid test using pXRF in the search for the source of the Stonehenge Altar Stone.

This paper presents an experimental study of the interaction of turbulent spots with an initially laminar separation, using schlieren visualisation and dynamic measurements of surface heat transfer and pressure. The separation is generated on a blunt cylinder-flare body, tested at Mach 9, and entropy layer effects result in a boundary layer edge Mach number of 3.43 at separation. A single roughness element is used to produce isolated spots, defined such that separation collapse and re-establishment is completed before arrival of the next spot. On average the spot axial length, at the start of the interaction, is 2.5 times the separation length, growing to 6.8 times as the spot base passes the original reattachment position. As such the spot comprises a large perturbation. The local separation responds almost immediately with passage of the spot, so that the downstream region may be unaffected while the upstream part has already collapsed. Re-establishment of separation is slow, taking up to four times the total transit time of the spot. A basic model is presented to explore the transient wave processes during spot passage.

The first demonstration of laser action in ruby was made in 1960 by T. H. Maiman of Hughes Research Laboratories, USA. Many laboratories worldwide began the search for lasers using different materials, operating at different wavelengths. In the UK, academia, industry and the central laboratories took up the challenge from the earliest days to develop these systems for a broad range of applications. This historical review looks at the contribution the UK has made to the advancement of the technology, the development of systems and components and their exploitation over the last 60 years.

Understanding of the roughness-induced laminar–turbulent transition of supersonic and hypersonic flows is partly challenged by the intricate sensitivities presented by different correlation criteria. We investigate experimentally the effect of height for an isolated roughness element of quadrilateral planform. Heat transfer measurements document the enhancement of roughness-induced disturbances – here the associated heat flux perturbation – along a downstream axisymmetric laminar separation. With increasing element height $k$, a gradual intensification in wake disturbance levels is found for subcritical elements ($k/\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}_{k}<0.15$, where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}_{k}$ is the undisturbed boundary layer thickness) while elements taller than the effective condition ($k/\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}_{k}\geqslant 0.32$) bypass the more moderate transition mechanisms to produce a fully turbulent element wake. Results exhibit high sensitivity to flow properties at roughness height between critical and effective conditions. A reduction in wake disturbance levels with increasing height is documented within $0.23\leqslant k/\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}_{k}\leqslant 0.32$. This effect coincides with a decrease in kinematic viscosity at roughness height $\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}_{k}$ (as Mach number at height $M_{k}$ increases from 1.52 to 1.96) and is restricted to elements with strong local separation, whereby the influence of local shear effects is enhanced.

For the past 15 years, a succession of stable isotope studies have documented the abrupt dietary transition from the Mesolithic to the Neolithic in Western and Northern Europe. Portugal, with its Late Mesolithic shell middens and burials apparently coexisting with the earliest Neolithic, further illustrates the nature of that transition. Individuals from Neolithic contexts there had significantly different diets to their Mesolithic counterparts. No evidence was found for a transitional phase between the marine-oriented Mesolithic subsistence regimes and the domesticated, terrestrial Neolithic diet. Two later Neolithic individuals, however, showed evidence for partial reliance on marine or aquatic foods. This raises questions about the possible persistence of marine dietary regimes beyond the Mesolithic period. This article is followed by a brief note by Mary Jackes and David Lubell.

It has long been acknowledged that Arator, author of the sixth-century Historia apostolica, was one of the Christian Latin writers with whom the author of the eighth-century Miracula Nynie episcopi was familiar. However, until now the critical consensus has been that the later poem was little more than a ‘cut-and-paste’ pastiche: Arator's phrases had been chosen largely for their metrical suitability; some were perhaps just ‘recycled’ borrowings rather than evidence of first-hand reading. But a close comparison of the two texts shows that the extent of the unknown author's borrowings from Arator is far greater than has hitherto been realized. Furthermore it reveals a detailed knowledge of the earlier poem, indeed an intimate understanding of it. This is evident not only in his poetic diction but also in his imitation of specific narrative detail where he displays a tendency to simplify his model, rendering the abstract concrete and the figurative literal.

Observations of quiescent prominences show rising plumes, dark in chromospheric lines, that propagate from large bubbles. In this paper we present a method that may be used to determine the plasma β (ratio of gas pressure to magnetic pressure) from the rising plumes. Using the classic fluid dynamic solution for flow around a circular cylinder, the compression of the prominence material can be estimated. Application to a prominence gave an estimate of the plasma β as β=0.47−1.13 for a ratio of specific heats of γ=1.4−1.7.

Quantitative polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis has been used to measure residual native whey proteins remaining after heat treatment of skim-milk and cheese whey in a kinetic study. The denaturation of α-lactalbumin (α-la) appeared to be first order, but was probably a second-order reaction displaying pseudo first-order kinetics. The denaturation of both β-lactoglobulin A and B (β-lgA and β-lgB) followed second-order kinetics while that of serum albumin was more complex, and could equally well be described as first or second order. Equations are given relating log k1 (in s-1) to temperature for α-la denaturation in skim-milk between 70 and 95 °C and between 100 and 150 °C. Similarly, equations relating log k2 (in lg-1s-1) to temperature are given for ²-lgA in skim-milk between 100 and 150 °C, and for ²-lgB between 95 and 150 °C. The relative heat stability of ²-lgA and ²-lgB was found to vary.

Below 95 °C ²-lgA appeared slightly more thermostable than ²-lgB in skim-milk, and the same was observed in cheese whey below 100 °C. Above these temperatures ²-lgB appeared more stable than ²-lgA.

Denaturation of ²-lgB was only slightly more rapid in skim-milk than in whey at temperatures below 95 °C, but was significantly slower at higher temperatures.

Measurements of residual native protein remaining after heat treatment of cheese whey have been made using quantitative polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The results have been expressed in terms of kinetic constants. The effect of concentration was investigated up to 3 times the normal total solids content, dialysis treatments were used to study the effect of non-protein constituents, and the effect of pH was studied at pH 4, 6 and 9. The results indicated that increased total solids (TS) concentration slowed the denaturation of β-lactoglobulin A and B (β-lg A, β-lg B) but hastened the denaturation of α-lactalbumin (α-la). However, increased lactose concentration slowed the denaturation of both α-la and β-lg, perhaps by preventing formation of heat-induced complexes. Increased Ca concentration, up to 0.4 mg/ml, tended to slow the denaturation of both proteins, but further increase in Ca up to 0.9 mg/;ml produced little effect. The rate of denaturation of both α-la and β-lg was slower at pH 4 than at pH 6 or 9, and was probably slowest at the isoelectric point. However, not all the changes associated with pH could be explained in terms of net molecular electrostatic charge. The genetic variants of ′β-lg showed different heat stabilities – below 90 °C β-lgA was more stable than β-lgB, but above 90 °C the situation was reversed at all TS concentrations, and pH 6. However, at pH 4 and 9, °-lgA was less stable than °-lgB over the entire temperature range at normal concentration.

Whole cells of Streptococcus lactis C10, when incubated with an energy source, converted fumarate to succinate and malate to lactate. Cell-free extracts of Str. lactis C10 contained fumarate reductase, but no aspartase, adenylosuccinate synthetase and lyase or argininosuccinate synthetase and lyase activity could be detected. Cells grown in the presence of [14C]bicarbonate produced labelled succinate during the synthesis of purine bases. However, the amount of succinate produced by this pathway only accounted for approximately one-sixth of the succinate produced by the cells.

The fixation of [14C]bicarbonate into aspartate by Streptococcus lactis C10 was achieved by the combined reactions of pyruvate carboxylase (E.C. 6.4.1.1) and glutamate-oxaloacetate transaminase (E.C. 2.6.1.1). The pyruvate carboxylase from Str. lactis C10, which was most active at pH 8·0, was activated by the divalent metal ions Mn2+, Mg2+ and Co2+, and inhibited by sulphydryl reagents. The enzyme was inhibited non-competitively by aspartic acid and competitively by oxaloacetate.

Streptococcus lactis C10, grown in tryptone–yeast extract–lactose broth containing [14C] bicarbonate, incorporated radioactivity into the protein and nucleic acid fractions of the cell as well as into compounds which were excreted by the organism into the growth medium. Aspartic acid was the first compound to be labelled and was the only amino acid labelled in the cell protein. All 4 bases were labelled in the cell RNA. Aspartic, succinic and lactic acids were the radioactive compounds excreted into the growth medium.

Resting cells of Streptococcus lactis C10 were able to synthesize aspartic acid de novo but could not actively transport aspartic acid into the cell. Intracellular aspartate was excreted from the cell in the presence of glucose but did not exchange with any extracellular amino acids. The results indicated that Str. lactis C10 obtains the aspartic acid it requires for growth by bicarbonate fixation instead of by the utilization of extracellular aspartic acid.
