  • Summary

    The human rights language and commitments in the Paris Agreement and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) matter for the success of these agreements. Human rights provide a “moral dimension” pushing environmental and sustainability efforts beyond technocratic monitoring, providing aspirational components necessary to realise the transformative potential of the task (Immler & Sakkers, 2021, p. 3). Human rights also provide a common global language and framework for ensuring that environmental and development initiatives are truly sustainable in human terms.

  • Cities increasingly base their local policies on human rights. Human rights cities promise to forge new alliances between urban actors and international organizations, to enable the 'translation' of the abstract language of human rights to the local level, and to develop new practices designed to bring about global urban justice. This book brings together academics and practitioners at the forefront of human rights cities and the 'right to the city' movement to critically discuss their history and also the potential that human rights cities hold for global urban justice.

  • The year 1966 is often cited as the start of the “second wave” of the organized women's movement, marked by the formation of the National Organization for Women (NOW). However, 1966 also marked the formal inception of another, less enduring group of women activists, the National Welfare Rights Organization (NWRO), linked to a separate but related social movement focused on welfare rights. From 1966 to 1975, NWRO coordinated welfare mothers' activism to shore up public assistance for the poor and to establish a federally guaranteed annual income. At its height in 1968, NWRO claimed twenty thousand members nationwide and dozens of local chapters from California to New York.
