In spring 2013, the Society for American Archaeology created the Task Force on Gender Disparities in Archaeological Grant Submissions because of an apparent disparity in the rates of senior (post-PhD) proposal submissions by men and women to archaeology programs at the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research. Although NSF success rates for men and women between 2009 and 2013 were roughly equal, the number of senior women archaeology submissions was half that of men. Given the documented increase in the proportion of women in academic archaeology, this representation of women seemed low. Moreover, submissions for NSF doctoral dissertation improvement grants were evenly divided between men and women. Statistics for Wenner-Gren noted the same general disparity in archaeology. This study examines and integrates a variety of data sources, including interviews with post-PhD women, to determine whether or not there is a problem in research grant submissions. Although the results indicate that there is a problem, it is multifaceted. Women are not well represented at research-intensive universities, and some women instead practice what we term “scaffolding” to integrate smaller pots of money to accomplish their research. Recommendations are provided for female applicants, academic departments, the Society for American Archaeology, and granting agencies.

Over the past several years, we have seen many attacks on publicly funded and mandated archaeology in the United States. These attacks occur at the state level, where governors and state legislatures try to defund or outright eliminate state archaeological programs and institutions. We have also seen several attacks at the federal level. Some members of Congress showcase archaeology as a waste of public tax dollars, and others propose legislation to move federally funded or permitted projects forward without consideration of impacts on archaeological resources. These attacks continue to occur, and we expect them to increase in the future. In the past, a vigilant network of historic preservation and archaeological organizations was able to thwart such attacks. The public, however, largely remains an untapped ally. As a discipline, we have not built a strong public support network. We have not demonstrated the value of archaeology to the public, beyond a scattering of educational and informational programs. In this article, we—a group of archaeologists whose work has focused on public engagement—provide a number of specific recommendations on how to build a strong public constituency for the preservation of our nation's archaeological heritage.

Lithium is a mood stabilizer rarely associated with drug-induced parkinsonism (DIP). We present a case of an elderly woman with bipolar disorder who developed parkinsonian symptoms after chronic lithium administration despite therapeutic serum levels. Upon evaluation, classic parkinsonian signs of muscle rigidity, tremor, bradykinesia, freezing of gait, and cognitive decline were observed. Initially, she was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease (PD); however, DaTscan SPECT imaging clarified the diagnosis as DIP. As the daily lithium dosage was reduced, the patient's motor symptoms improved. This report emphasizes close monitoring of lithium levels in geriatric populations and the need to consider lithium-induced parkinsonism when PD symptoms appear in chronic lithium users.

The provision of surgery within humanitarian crises is complex, requiring coordination and cooperation among all stakeholders. During the 2011 Humanitarian Action Summit best practice guidelines were proposed to provide greater accountability and standardization in surgical humanitarian relief efforts. Surgical humanitarian relief planning should occur early and include team selection and preparation, appropriate disaster-specific anticipatory planning, needs assessment, and an awareness of local resources and limitations of cross-cultural project management. Accurate medical record keeping and timely follow-up is important for a transient surgical population. Integration with local health systems is essential and will help facilitate longer term surgical health system strengthening.

Limb amputations are frequently performed as a result of trauma inflicted during conflict or disasters. As demonstrated during the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, coordinating care of these patients in austere settings is complex. During the 2011 Humanitarian Action Summit, consensus statements were developed for international organizations providing care to limb amputation patients during disasters or humanitarian emergencies. Expanded planning is needed for a multidisciplinary surgical care team, inclusive of surgeons, anesthesiologists, rehabilitation specialists and mental health professionals. Surgical providers should approach amputation using an operative technique that optimizes limb length and prosthetic fitting. Appropriate anesthesia care involves both peri-operative and long-term pain control. Rehabilitation specialists must be involved early in treatment, ideally before amputation, and should educate the surgical team in prosthetic considerations. Mental health specialists must be included to help the patient with community reintegration. A key step in developing local health systemsis the establishment of surgical outcomes monitoring. Such monitoring can optimizepatient follow-up and foster professional accountability for the treatment of amputation patients in disaster settings and humanitarian emergencies.

In the giant cylindrical cells found in Characean algae, multitudes of the molecular motor myosin transport the cytoplasm along opposing spiralling bands covering the inside of the cell wall, generating a helical shear flow in the large central vacuole. It has been suggested that such flows enhance mixing within the vacuole (van de Meent, Tuval & Goldstein, Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 101, 2008, paper no. 178102) and thereby play a role in regulating metabolism. For this to occur the membrane that encloses the vacuole, namely the tonoplast, must transmit efficiently the hydrodynamic shear generated in the cytoplasm. Existing measurements of streaming flows are of insufficient spatial resolution and extent to provide tests of fluid mechanical theories of such flows and information on the shear transmission. Here, using magnetic resonance velocimetry (MRV), we present the first measurements of cytoplasmic streaming velocities in single living cells. The spatial variation of the longitudinal velocity field in cross-sections of internodal cells of Chara corallina is obtained with spatial resolution of 16 μm and is shown to be in quantitative agreement with a recent theoretical analysis (Goldstein, Tuval & van de Meent, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA, vol. 105, 2008, p. 3663) of rotational cytoplasmic streaming driven by bidirectional helical forcing in the cytoplasm, with direct shear transmission by the tonoplast. These results highlight the open problem of understanding tonoplast motion induced by streaming. Moreover, this study suggests the suitability of MRV in the characterization of streaming flows in a variety of eukaryotic systems and for microfluidic phenomena in general.
