Non-dicamba-resistant soybean yield loss resulting from dicamba off-target injury has become an increasing concern for soybean growers in recent years. After off-target dicamba movement occurs onto sensitive soybean, little information is available on tactics that could be used to mitigate the cosmetic or yield losses that may occur. Therefore, a field experiment was conducted in 2017, 2018, and 2019 to determine whether certain recovery treatments of fungicide, plant growth hormone, macro- and micronutrient fertilizer combinations, or weekly irrigation could reduce dicamba injury and/or result in similar yield to soybean that was not injured with dicamba. Simulated drift events of dicamba (5.6 g ae ha−1) were applied to non-dicamba-resistant soybean once they reached the V3 or R2 stages of growth. Recovery treatments were applied approximately 14 d after the simulated drift event. Weekly irrigation was the only recovery treatment that provided appreciable levels of injury reduction or increases in soybean height or yield compared to the dicamba-injured plants. Weekly irrigation following the R2 dicamba injury event resulted in an 1% to 14% increase in soybean yield compared with the dicamba-injured control. All other recovery treatments resulted in soybean yields that were similar to the dicamba-injured control, and similar to or lower than the nontreated control. Results from this study indicate that if soybean have become injured with dicamba, weekly irrigation will help soybean recover some of the yield loss and reduce injury symptoms that resulted from off-target dicamba movement, especially in a year with below average precipitation. However, yield loss will likely not be restored to that of noninjured soybean.

Climate change and an increase in endangered species, are examples of technological advances negatively impacting the environment. As technology demands increase, an earnest effort to reduce the environmental impact of processing and manufacturing related activities is critical. From a business perspective, minimizing or removing toxic process chemicals is a high impact area that can increase work environment safety and decrease waste management costs. This work presents processing considerations when transitioning to greener alternative polymer resist solvents, for applications in nanomanufacturing with sustainability considerations. Within government contracting, process modifications that change product form, fit, or function require qualification and at minimum justification. This work presents the conversion from a chlorobenzene to anisole based solvent using a 495 kMW polymetheyl methacrylate polymer resin, without impacting form fit or function of the intended device. Resist conversion is of interest as the difference in the substituents of the two solvents, impact the effective toxicity of the polymer resists. Specifically, the oral median lethal dose (LD50) in rats for chlorobenzene is 1110 mg/kg, while anisole is 3700 mg/kg. Therefore, developing a process utilizing anisole and replacing chlorobenzene addresses safety concerns and contributes to green initiatives worldwide. Within this work electron beam lithography fabricated transistor components consisting of a double layered source, and gate were converted from a chlorobenzene to anisole based process; while maintaining process of record specifications. The purpose of this work is to provide a starting platform for individuals seeking to convert from a chlorobenzene solvent to an anisole based resist for sub-micron lithography steps.

The Neolithic in north-east Asia is defined by the presence of ceramic containers, rather than agriculture, among hunter-gatherer communities. The role of pottery in such groups has, however, hitherto been unclear. This article presents the results of organic residue analysis of Neolithic pottery from Sakhalin Island in the Russian Far East. Results indicate that early pottery on Sakhalin was used for the processing of aquatic species, and that its adoption formed part of a wider Neolithic transition involving the reorientation of local lifeways towards the exploitation of marine resources.

The demonstration of low arylsulfatase-A (ASA) activity in leucocytes or fibroblasts is used often to establish the diagnosis of metachromatic leucodystrophy (MLD). However, low ASA activity is observed also in pseudo-ASA deficiency which may be as common as MLD. We report two patients with pseudo ASA deficiency who had abnormal neurological findings consistent with atypical MLD. Because the measurement of ASA activity is neither a sensitive nor specific method with which to establish a diagnosis of MLD, this diagnosis should be confirmed by nerve biopsy, measurement of urinary sulfatide or a cerebroside sulfate loading test, using cultured fibroblasts.

The relationships between total and free serum valproate (VPA) concentrations and seizure control, serum liver enzyme activity and plasma ammonia concentration were studied in 61 epileptic children. Enzymeimmunoassay (EMIT)R methods gave higher values of total VPA concentration than gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) methods. In over 80% of children with complete seizure control the ranges of total VPA concentration were 140-420 umol/L with GLC methods and 210-560 umol/L with EMIT methods. The range of free VPA concentrations in 78% of children with complete seizure control was 8.8-26.4 umol/L. Increased liver enzyme activity was observed in 6 of the 61 children and raised plasma ammonia concentration in 11 of 50 children. Plasma ammonia concentration was related to total serum VPA but was not related to free serum VPA. Increased serum liver enzyme activity was related to VPA dose per kg but not to free or total serum VPA concentration. Thus free VPA concentrations do not appear to be more useful than total VPA concentrations in predicting seizure control and do not correlate with liver enzyme activity or plasma ammonia concentration.

On rare occasions anticonvulsant medication may cause severe or fatal toxic reactions. This position paper, approved by the Canadian Association for Child Neurology, examines the value of routine blood and urine screening to prevent catastrophic reactions in asymptomatic patients. The basic assumptions of such a screening program are faulty or unproven. Although not definitive, available studies of screening do not appear to support its value. It is recommended that routine blood and urine screening be discontinued in asymptomatic patients. Until such time as further research is able to identify patients at special risk, it is suggested that patients be carefully informed of the early symptoms of severe toxic reactions and report these immediately to a physician.

The epileptic encephalopathies comprise a group of devastating seizure syndromes which begin in infancy and early childhood and usually result in intractable epilepsy. While some syndromes are relatively easily diagnosed early in their course, others take time to evolve, hampering an early, confident diagnosis. Epileptic encephalopathies are associated with slowing of cognitive function and evolution of severe behavioral disorders, which are often more distressing to families than the epilepsy. While an underlying etiology may explain some of this co-morbidity, many children have no identifiable etiology found for their seizures. In these “idiopathic” cases, recurrent subtle seizures, frequent epileptiform discharge and non-convulsive status epilepticus probably all play a role in deterioration of cognitive function and evolution of behavior disorders. This paper will review the most common epileptic encephalopathy syndromes, discuss the cognitive and behavioral co-morbidities and review current therapeutic options.

Prior studies have found no adverse effects of pediatric epilepsy surgery on IQ. However, empirical techniques such as regression models, designed to account for confounding factors such as practice effects and test–retest reliability and able to provide a standardized method for evaluating outcome, have not been used in studying change after pediatric epilepsy. The goal of this study was to demonstrate the regression technique while empirically measuring the effect of epilepsy surgery on IQ in a group of pediatric patients. Predictors of retest IQ (e.g., baseline IQ, retest interval, demographics, epilepsy severity) were evaluated in a control group with intractable seizures (N = 23) assessed twice with the WISC–III. The resulting equation was used to evaluate IQ changes in a second group of children who underwent epilepsy surgery (N = 22). In controls, baseline IQ was a strong predictor of retest IQ. Number of AEDs was inversely related to retest IQ. Based on the control regression, four children (18%) in the surgical sample obtained significantly higher than expected postsurgical IQ scores and one child (5%) obtained a lower than expected IQ score. This study demonstrates that regression-based techniques yield informative estimates on outcome and may be an improvement over prior methods of measuring change after pediatric epilepsy surgery.
