Hyperbolic polariton modes are highly appealing for a broad range of applications in nanophotonics, including surfaced enhanced sensing, sub-diffractional imaging, and reconfigurable metasurfaces. Here we show that attenuated total reflectance (ATR) micro-spectroscopy using standard spectroscopic tools can launch hyperbolic polaritons in a Kretschmann–Raether configuration. We measure multiple hyperbolic and dielectric modes within the naturally hyperbolic material hexagonal boron nitride as a function of different isotopic enrichments and flake thickness. This overcomes the technical challenges of measurement approaches based on nanostructuring, or scattering scanning near-field optical microscopy. Ultimately, our ATR approach allows us to compare the optical properties of small-scale materials prepared by different techniques systematically.

The atomic and electronic structures of pyramidal model STM tips of transition metals (W, Rh, Pd, Ir and Pt) were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) method. The calculated density of states show that d electrons of the apex atoms in the M4 (M = W, Rh, Pd, Ir, Pt) model tips behave differently near the Fermi level, with the dz2 state being dominant only for W tip. The electronic structures of pyramid structures of W and Pd single-atom tips with larger sizes are studied and compared. The density of states of Pd apex atom and W apex atom show different occupation of d-bands leading to asymmetric density of states for Pd tip. The asymmetric tunneling currents measured by W and Pt-Ir STM tips are explained by the calculated electronic structures of W and Pd model tips.

Short-lead prepulse inhibition and long-lead prepulse facilitation of startle are greater during attended than ignored prestimuli. The present work examined whether this attentional modification is influenced by monetary incentive. Participants (43 college students) were randomly assigned to receive a small performance-based monetary incentive or were instructed to try their best. The task was to judge the duration of tones of one of two pitches during a series of 48 tones. Prepulse inhibition of startle eyeblink EMG was assessed at 60, 120, and 240 ms, and prepulse facilitation was assessed at 4,500 ms following tone onset. Short-lead percent prepulse inhibition was greater during attended than ignored prestimuli only at 120 ms among paid participants. Long-lead prepulse facilitation was greater for attended than ignored tones, but this effect did not vary with incentive condition. This study demonstrates that attentional modification of short-lead prepulse inhibition is sensitive to a monetary incentive and provides a basis for further examination of motivational effects on early attentional processing.

Histidine-rich proteins (HRP), which function in the biological control of inorganic materials, have been identified in the liver fluke Fasciola hepatica, marine polychaetes, humans, and the malarial parasite Plasmodium falciparum. For example, the malarial parasite contains HRP II composed of repeating peptide sequences of Ala-His-His-Ala-His-His-AlaAla-Asp. This peptide was screened as a stabilizing peptide coat for a variety of nanoclusters of Ag0, Au0, ZnS, TiO2, and Ag2S, and characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, fluorescence, IR, XRD, and TEM. The resulting nanoclusters were examined for immunoreactivity against a commercial monoclonal antibody for HRP II of P. falciparum.
