The Variables and Slow Transients Survey (VAST) on the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) is designed to detect highly variable and transient radio sources on timescales from 5 s to $\sim\!5$ yr. In this paper, we present the survey description, observation strategy and initial results from the VAST Phase I Pilot Survey. This pilot survey consists of $\sim\!162$ h of observations conducted at a central frequency of 888 MHz between 2019 August and 2020 August, with a typical rms sensitivity of $0.24\ \mathrm{mJy\ beam}^{-1}$ and angular resolution of $12-20$ arcseconds. There are 113 fields, each of which was observed for 12 min integration time, with between 5 and 13 repeats, with cadences between 1 day and 8 months. The total area of the pilot survey footprint is 5 131 square degrees, covering six distinct regions of the sky. An initial search of two of these regions, totalling 1 646 square degrees, revealed 28 highly variable and/or transient sources. Seven of these are known pulsars, including the millisecond pulsar J2039–5617. Another seven are stars, four of which have no previously reported radio detection (SCR J0533–4257, LEHPM 2-783, UCAC3 89–412162 and 2MASS J22414436–6119311). Of the remaining 14 sources, two are active galactic nuclei, six are associated with galaxies and the other six have no multi-wavelength counterparts and are yet to be identified.

The Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey (RACS) is the first large-area survey to be conducted with the full 36-antenna Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope. RACS will provide a shallow model of the ASKAP sky that will aid the calibration of future deep ASKAP surveys. RACS will cover the whole sky visible from the ASKAP site in Western Australia and will cover the full ASKAP band of 700–1800 MHz. The RACS images are generally deeper than the existing NRAO VLA Sky Survey and Sydney University Molonglo Sky Survey radio surveys and have better spatial resolution. All RACS survey products will be public, including radio images (with $\sim$ 15 arcsec resolution) and catalogues of about three million source components with spectral index and polarisation information. In this paper, we present a description of the RACS survey and the first data release of 903 images covering the sky south of declination $+41^\circ$ made over a 288-MHz band centred at 887.5 MHz.

Some extragalactic supernovae, such as SN 1986J in NGC 891 (Rupen et al. 1987), are unusually strong radio sources. Their radio emission typically peaks a few years after the supernova explodes, and appears to arise from the interaction of the supernova shock with a dense stellar wind shed by the progenitor star. Since two radio-loud and possibly optically faint supernovae have recently been found serendipitously in nearby spiral galaxies, it is possible that such objects are common. If so, this would have important consequences for our understanding of both the chemical enrichment history of galaxies and the radio emission from starburst galaxies. Preliminary results from a survey of nearby spiral galaxies with the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (MOST) allow us to make a first estimate of the radio supernova rate. A larger study now in progress will provide a much more sensitive measurement.

Elliptical galaxies are at first sight a remarkably homogenous class of objects, yet some of them produce large and enormously powerful radio sources while others remain more or less quiescent. Why should this be so? What prompts the nucleus of an elliptical galaxy to become ‘active’? What, if anything, do elliptical galaxies have in common with the bulges of spirals? Here, I review some of the radio and optical properties of nearby elliptical galaxies, with special emphasis on events which take place within the central kiloparsec.

We have compared the spectra of six Type Ia supernovae, at ages between 4 and 404 days after maximum light, to see whether all show similar evolutionary behaviour. We find that the spectral lines between 6800 Å and 8000 Å follow a smooth evolutionary trend, but that lines redward of 8000 Å show significant differences. SN 1987I and SN 19880 show extra emission over a broader wavelength region, possibly due to OI 8446 Å emission which would indicate higher envelope densities for these objects. Our results are consistent with the trend of expansion velocity with parent galaxy type reported by Branch and van den Bergh (1993). Variations within the class of Ia SNe may affect their use as standard candles.

Traditional HI surveys of optically selected elliptical galaxies are time-consuming, and have a low detection rate. The forthcoming Parkes HI multibeam survey offers the exciting possibility of surveying more than 10,000 nearby elliptical galaxies for HI. I argue that this is likely to result in the detection of a large population of small, HI-rich elliptical galaxies which have not previously been studied in any systematic way.

We present the first results from a study of the radio continuum properties of galaxies in the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey, (2dFGRS) based on thirty 2dF fields covering a total area of about 100 deg2. About 1·5% of galaxies with bJ < 19·4 mag. are detected as radio continuum sources in the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS). Of these, roughly 40% are star-forming galaxies and 60% are active galaxies (mostly low-power radio galaxies and a few Seyferts). The combination of 2dFGRS and NVSS will eventually yield a homogeneous set of around 4000 radio-galaxy spectra, which will be a powerful tool for studying the distribution and evolution of both AGN and starburst galaxies out to z ∼ 0·3.

HI absorption-line studies provide a unique probe of the gas distribution and kinematics in galaxies well beyond the local universe (z ≳ 0.3). HI absorption-line surveys with next-generation radio telescopes will provide the first large-scale studies of HI in a redshift regime which is poorly understood. However, we currently lack the understanding to infer galaxy properties from absorption-line observations alone. To address this issue, we are conducting a search for intervening HI absorption in a sample of 20 nearby galaxies. Our aim is to investigate how the detection rate varies with distance from the galaxy. We target sight-lines to bright continuum sources, which intercept known gas-rich galaxies, selected from the HIPASS Bright Galaxy Catalogue (Koribalski et al. 2004). In our pilot sample, six galaxies with impact parameters < 20 kpc, we do not detect any absorption lines — although all are detected in 21cm emission. This indicates that an absorption non-detection cannot simply be interpreted as an absence of neutral gas – see Fig. 1. Our detection rate is low compared to previous surveys e.g. Gupta et al. (2010). This is, at least partially, due to the high resolution of the observations reducing the flux of the background source, which will also be an issue in future surveys, such as ASKAP-FLASH.

We have conducted deep optical spectroscopic follow up of a sample of radio galaxies with redshifts z < 0.7. The spectra were used to construct robust sub-samples of low excitation and high excitation AGN and perform stellar population analysis via line indices and spectral fitting. While the high excitation objects have lower luminosity-weighted ages and lower metallicities than the low excitation galaxies, this can be explained by the different stellar mass distributions of the samples. When stellar mass is taken into account the age and metallicity distribution of both populations are consistent with the galaxy population as a whole.

The fields of extragalactic research and cosmology have continued to progress rapidly over the past three years, as detailed in the reports of the Commission Presidents, and we are pleased to acknowledge the award of the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics to Saul Perlmutter, Brian P. Schmidt and Adam G. Riess for “the discovery of the accelerating expansion of the Universe through observations of distant supernovae”. The Gruber Cosmology Prize was awarded in 2009 to Wendy L. Freedman, Robert C. Kennicutt and Jeremy Mould for their leadership of the Hubble Space Telescope Key Project on the Extragalactic Distance Scale, in 2010 to Charles Steidel for the identification and study of galaxies in the very distant universe, and in 2011 to Marc Davis, George Efstathiou, Carlos Frenk and Simon D.M. White for pioneering the use of numerical simulations as a tool to model and interpret the large-scale distribution of galaxies and dark matter.

We have carried out a large observational study of the radio luminosities, stellar populations, and environments of massive galaxies over the redshift range 0 < z < 1. Radio jets powered by an accreting central black hole are common in massive galaxies, and there is a large class of “optically quiet AGN,” with radio emission but no optical/IR signature of black-hole accretion. The central black holes in these galaxies are probably accreting in a radiatively inefficient mode, and our results suggest that “radio-mode feedback” as described by Croton et al. is likely to occur in all masssive early-type galaxies at z < 0.8. While it appears that radio-loud AGN occur episodically in all massive early-type galaxies, we also identify a sub-population of galaxies with powerful radio sources and a prominent younger (~ 108 yr) stellar population that may have undergone recent mergers.

This short report describes some highlights in extragalactic research over the past three years, and lists the main symposia and meetings in the domain.

The Supernova Working Group was re-established at the IAU XXV General Assembly in Sydney, 21 July 2003, sponsored by Commissions 28 (Galaxies) and 47 (Cosmology). Here we report on some of its activities since 2005.

Division VIII gathers astronomers engaged in the study of the visible and invisible matter in the Universe at large, from Local Group galaxies via distant galaxies and galaxy clusters to the large-scale structure of the Universe and the cosmic background radiation.

The members of Commission 28 on Galaxies were very busy during this General Assembly, with the Commission involved in two Symposia (IAU Symposium No. 235 Galaxy Evolution across the Hubble Time, IAU Symposium No. 238 Black Holes: from Stars to Galaxies), and two Joint Discussions (JD07 The Universe at z > 6, JD15 New Cosmology Results from the Spitzer Space Telescope). Therefore, the Business Meeting was combined with the Division VIII Business Meeting, which included a short information session on the new Commission 28 Organizing Committee. The triennial report of the Commission for 2003-2005 was also distributed, and is available on the Commission 28 web site.

This report gives a brief overview of some of the activities and developments in extragalactic research over the past three years.

The Sydney University Molonglo Sky Survey (SUMSS) is a radio continuum imaging survey of the southern sky at 843 MHz, with similar sensitivity and resolution to the northern NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS). We have combined radio data from SUMSS and NVSS with optical spectra from the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey and 6dF Galaxy Survey to study the space distribution and properties of both AGN and star-forming galaxies in the local universe (redshift range 0 < z < 0.3). We also discuss new results on radio-source clustering in the more distant universe (z ∼ 1) and present the first results from a search for the most distant (z > 3) southern radio galaxies.

We report the discovery of two small intergalactic H II regions in the loose group of galaxies around the field elliptical NGC 1490. The H II regions are located at least 100 kpc from any optical galaxy but are associated with a number of large H I clouds that are lying along an arc 500 kpc in length and that have no optical counterpart on the Digital Sky Survey. The sum of the H I masses of the clouds is almost 1010M⊙ and the largest H I cloud is about 100 kpc in size. Deep optical imaging reveals a very low surface brightness counterpart to this largest H I cloud, making this one of the H I richest optical galaxies known (MHI/LV ~ 200). Spectroscopy of the H II regions indicates that the abundance in these H II regions is only slightly sub-solar, excluding a primordial origin of the H I clouds. The H I clouds are perhaps remnants resulting from the tidal disruption of a reasonably sized galaxy, probably quite some time ago, by the loose group to which NGC 1490 belongs. Alternatively, they are remnants of the merger that created the field elliptical NGC 1490. The isolated H II regions show that star formation on a very small scale can occur in intergalactic space in gas drawn from galaxies by tidal interactions. Many such intergalactic small star formation regions may exist near tidally interacting galaxies.

The Sydney University Molonglo Sky Survey (SUMSS) is a radio imaging survey at 843 MHz of the whole sky south of declination −30°. With a resolution of 43″ × 43″ cosec |δ| and an rms noise level of ∼ 1 mJy/beam, SUMSS has similar sensitivity and resolution to the northern NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS). Here, we present some results from the first two years of SUMSS and also show what can be done by combining radio data from SUMSS and NVSS with the new generation of large optical redshift surveys (including the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey and 6dF Galaxy Survey) now becoming available in the southern hemisphere.
