Competition among the two-plasmon decay (TPD) of backscattered light of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS), filamentation of the electron-plasma wave (EPW) and forward side SRS is investigated by two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. Our previous work [K. Q. Pan et al., Nucl. Fusion 58, 096035 (2018)] showed that in a plasma with the density near 1/10 of the critical density, the backscattered light would excite the TPD, which results in suppression of the backward SRS. However, this work further shows that when the laser intensity is so high ($>{10}^{16}$ W/cm2) that the backward SRS cannot be totally suppressed, filamentation of the EPW and forward side SRS will be excited. Then the TPD of the backscattered light only occurs in the early stage and is suppressed in the latter stage. Electron distribution functions further show that trapped-particle-modulation instability should be responsible for filamentation of the EPW. This research can promote the understanding of hot-electron generation and SRS saturation in inertial confinement fusion experiments.

The target backsheath field acceleration mechanism is one of the main mechanisms of laser-driven proton acceleration (LDPA) and strongly depends on the comprehensive performance of the ultrashort ultra-intense lasers used as the driving sources. The successful use of the SG-II Peta-watt (SG-II PW) laser facility for LDPA and its applications in radiographic diagnoses have been manifested by the good performance of the SG-II PW facility. Recently, the SG-II PW laser facility has undergone extensive maintenance and a comprehensive technical upgrade in terms of the seed source, laser contrast and terminal focus. LDPA experiments were performed using the maintained SG-II PW laser beam, and the highest cutoff energy of the proton beam was obviously increased. Accordingly, a double-film target structure was used, and the maximum cutoff energy of the proton beam was up to 70 MeV. These results demonstrate that the comprehensive performance of the SG-II PW laser facility was improved significantly.

Background: Dystonia is common in children with acquired and inherited neurological disorders. Status dystonicus (SD) is the most severe form of dystonia that can lead to life-threatening complications if not treated promptly. We identified a local provider knowledge gap in the acute management of dystonia, leading to uncertainty and delays in care. To our knowledge, no in-hospital clinical pathway exists for the ward-based management of acute dystonia. We hypothesized that a stepwise clinical pathway would standardize and improve comfort in managing hyperacute dystonia. Methods: We formed a multidisciplinary working group and developed a pathway based on literature review and expert consensus. Aims of the pathway included: reducing delays in recognition and treatment of acute dystonia, limiting variation in management, and decreasing progression to SD. A survey was administered to providers assessing knowledge and comfort post-implementation. Results: There has been high usability with 58% (18/31) of providers surveyed having used the pathway at least once. Provider comfort has improved, with 89% (25/28) of respondents reporting increased comfort managing SD due to the clarity of the pathway and stepwise directions. Conclusions: The pathway fills a gap in the in-hospital management of dystonia and has led to increased provider comfort.

Background: Within the IMPACT-AD BC study, we sought to address the gap in knowledge around how the use of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) CSF biomarker testing impacts clinical management. Methods: IMPACT-AD BC (NCT05002699, impactAD.org) is an observational, longitudinal study examining the role of AD CSF biomarker testing (i.e., amyloid-beta and tau proteoforms) in medical and personal decision-making, and health economics. For medical decision-making, physicians completed surveys on patient management plans before and after receiving the biomarker findings. Overall change in management was assessed as a composite measure of changes in the use of: (i) AD symptomatic medications, (ii) other dementia-relevant medications, (iii) diagnostic procedures, and (iv) referrals or counselling. Results: Of the 142 participants, 66% were determined to have CSF biomarker profiles on the AD continuum. Overall change in management was observed in 89% of patients, with the greatest changes by category being: diagnostic procedures > referrals and counselling > AD symptomatic medications > other dementia-relevant medications. Conclusions: The use of AD CSF biomarker testing increases diagnostic confidence and aids in medical decision-making. Notably, the addition of biomarker testing leads to a reduction in the use of other diagnostic procedures, helps optimize pharmacotherapy and results in increased physician-patient/family member counselling.

The kinetic–magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) hybrid simulation approach for macroscopic instabilities in plasmas can be extended to include the kinetic effects of both thermal ions and energetic ions. The new coupling scheme includes synchronization of the density and parallel velocity between thermal ions and MHD, in addition to pressure coupling, to ensure the quasineutrality condition and avoid numerical errors. The new approach has been implemented in the kinetic-MHD code M3D-C1-K, and was used to study the thermal ion kinetic effects and Landau damping in fishbone modes in both DIII-D and NSTX. It is found that the thermal ion kinetic effects can cause an increase of the frequencies of the non-resonant $n=1$ fishbone modes driven by energetic particles for $q_\mathrm {min}>1$, and Landau damping can provide additional stabilization effects. A nonlinear simulation for $n=1$ fishbone mode in NSTX is also performed, and the perturbation on magnetic flux surfaces and the transport of energetic particles are calculated.

We report a rare case of aortic valve atresia and type C interrupted aortic arch with retrograde filling of the ascending aorta via the right common carotid artery through intracranial collateralisation and a presumed intact circle of Willis, who successfully underwent a complete biventricular repair in the neonatal period.

The great demographic pressure brings tremendous volume of beef demand. The key to solve this problem is the growth and development of Chinese cattle. In order to find molecular markers conducive to the growth and development of Chinese cattle, sequencing was used to determine the position of copy number variations (CNVs), bioinformatics analysis was used to predict the function of ZNF146 gene, real-time fluorescent quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was used for CNV genotyping and one-way analysis of variance was used for association analysis. The results showed that there exists CNV in Chr 18: 47225201-47229600 (5.0.1 version) of ZNF146 gene through the early sequencing results in the laboratory and predicted ZNF146 gene was expressed in liver, skeletal muscle and breast cells, and was amplified or overexpressed in pancreatic cancer, which promoted the development of tumour through bioinformatics. Therefore, it is predicted that ZNF146 gene affects the proliferation of muscle cells, and then affects the growth and development of cattle. Furthermore, CNV genotyping of ZNF146 gene was three types (deletion type, normal type and duplication type) by Real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR (qPCR). The association analysis results showed that ZNF146-CNV was significantly correlated with rump length of Qinchuan cattle, hucklebone width of Jiaxian red cattle and heart girth of Yunling cattle. From the above results, ZNF146-CNV had a significant effect on growth traits, which provided an important candidate molecular marker for growth and development of Chinese cattle.

In March 2018, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, California Department of Public Health, Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and Pennsylvania Department of Health initiated an investigation of an outbreak of Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc) infections. Sixty infections were identified in California, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maine, Nevada and Ohio. The infections were linked to a no-rinse cleansing foam product (NRCFP), produced by Manufacturer A, used for skin care of patients in healthcare settings. FDA inspected Manufacturer A's production facility (manufacturing site of over-the-counter drugs and cosmetics), reviewed production records and collected product and environmental samples for analysis. FDA's inspection found poor manufacturing practices. Analysis by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis confirmed a match between NRCFP samples and clinical isolates. Manufacturer A conducted extensive recalls, FDA issued a warning letter citing the manufacturer's inadequate manufacturing practices, and federal, state and local partners issued public communications to advise patients, pharmacies, other healthcare providers and healthcare facilities to stop using the recalled NRCFP. This investigation highlighted the importance of following appropriate manufacturing practices to minimize microbial contamination of cosmetic products, especially if intended for use in healthcare settings.

In centrifugal compressors, the identification of flow instability signals from experiments is a difficult problem owing to the nonlinear and non-stationary characteristics. Otherwise, the complicated asymmetric structure of the volute brings a huge challenge to the evolution and circumferential nonuniformity characteristics of the flow instabilities. This paper presents experimental and numerical investigations on internal flow field to understand the flow instability characteristics in a centrifugal compressor. Considering nonlinear and non-stationary signals, a method based on Fourier-transform and variational mode decomposition was introduced to analyse the flow instability characteristics. The Fourier spectrum results show that at 0.21kg/s of 80krpm, the pressure signal has a noticeable high-frequency fluctuation, which indicates that the compressor enters the flow instability state. The variational mode decomposition results show that before a surge, the compressor experiences different flow instability stages: the RI stage, the coexistence stage of RI and stall, and the stall stage. Moreover, obvious circumferential nonuniformity characteristics of flow instabilities were observed during the throttling process. RI first occurred at the 180° circumferential position and then the stall first appeared in the circumferential range of 60° to 240°. The simulation results that it is because that the asymmetric volute causes the adverse pressure gradient inside the impeller passage and a high-pressure region (120°–240°) at the upstream of the impeller inlet. Under this combined action of the two, the effect region of tip leakage vortex expands the upstream of the impeller inlet. Meanwhile, the tip leakage vortex core migrates to a lower span of blades. This study demonstrates the ability to analyse nonlinear and non-stationary signals from a centrifugal compressor via variational mode decomposition, and provides a useful guidance for the identification of flow instability signals.

Frequent freezing injury greatly influences winter wheat production; thus, effective prevention and a command of agricultural production are vital. The freezing injury monitoring method integrated with ‘3S’ (geographic information systems (GIS), global positioning system (GPS) and remote sensing (RS)) technology has an unparalleled advantage. Using HuanJing (HJ)-1A/1B satellite images of a winter wheat field in Shanxi Province, China plus a field survey, crop types and winter wheat planting area were identified through repeated visual interpretations of image information and spatial analyses conducted in GIS. Six vegetation indices were extracted from processed HJ-1A/1B satellite images to determine whether the winter wheat suffered from freezing injury and its degree of severity and recovery, using change vector analysis (CVA), the freeze injury representative vegetation index and the combination of the two methods, respectively. Accuracy of the freezing damage classification results was verified by determining the impact of freezing damage on yield and quantitative analysis. The CVA and the change of normalized difference vegetation index (ΔNDVI) monitoring results were different so a comprehensive analysis of the combination of CVA and ΔNDVI was performed. The area with serious freezing injury covered 0.9% of the total study area, followed by the area of no freezing injury (3.5%), moderate freezing injury (10.2%) and light freezing injury (85.4%). Of the moderate and serious freezing injury areas, 0.2% did not recover; 1.2% of the no freezing injury and light freezing injury areas showed optimal recovery, 15.6% of the light freezing injury and moderate freezing injury areas showed poor recovery, and the remaining areas exhibited general recovery.
