We investigate the contribution of major mergers to star formation in spheroidal galaxies at z ~ 2. Galaxies are visually classified from a sample of massive galaxies in CANDELS. At the redshifts used, the observed morphological disturbances are due to recent major mergers as minor mergers are too faint. The percentage of blue spheroids showing morphological disturbances is 21 ± 4%, indicating that major mergers are not the dominant star formation mechanism in these galaxies. Thus, minor mergers or cold accretion are likely to be the main drivers of star formation. We investigate the U-band luminosity emission of the sample and find that only a small fraction of the cosmic L(U) is from galaxies involved in a major merger, ~30%. Using the ratio of specific star formation rate for LTGs to mergers and combining this with the results for the luminosity budget shows that only ~6% of the total L(U) emitted at z ~ 2 is due to the major merger process.

It is now clear that the epoch when the Universe was half of its current age is a crucial period during which galaxies assembled their mass and evolved into the galaxies we observe in the local Universe. However, so far only very few direct studies of mass assembly in action, hence galaxy merging, were conducted over z=1 and usually relied on very small or biased samples. Based on very deep near infrared survey data, the latest UKIDSS-UDS DR8, combined with the optical data conducted by Subaru and CFHT and Spitzer IRAC observations, we explored the evolution of the merging rate up to z = 2, over the largest volume of the Universe at 0.4<z<2 ever sampled. The pair fraction is found to decrease by a factor of two during this period, and wet (gas rich) mergers dominate largely. The dry mergers are very rare, ruling it out as the main mechanism for the mass assembly of passive massive galaxies. Also while massive galaxies undergo a decrease of their pair fraction during this period, less massive systems follow an increase during the same period.

Galaxy assembly is an unsolved problem, with ΛCDM theoretical models unable to easily account for among other things, the abundances of massive galaxies, and the observed merger history. We show here how the problem of galaxy formation can be addressed in an empirical way without recourse to models. We discuss how galaxy assembly occurs at 1.5 < z < 3 examining the role of major and minor mergers, and gas accretion from the intergalactic medium in forming massive galaxies with log M* > 11 found within the GOODS NICMOS Survey (GNS). We find that major mergers, minor mergers and gas accretion are roughly equally important in the galaxy formation process during this epoch, with 64% of the mass assembled through merging and 36% through accreted gas which is later converted to stars, while 58% of all new star formation during this epoch arises from gas accretion. We also discuss how the total gas accretion rate is measured as Ṁ = 90±40 M⊙ yr−1 at this epoch, a value close to those found in some hydrodynamical simulations.

We report the first results of the ongoing survey using HST/WFPC2 (F300W) in parallel with ACS within the Chandra Deep Field South. A sample of 34 objects were identified in the WFPC2 images and their counterparts were found in the ACS images taken by the GOODS team; 6 of them are stars. Galaxies were classified as early-, late-types, and starbursts by template fitting which was also used to determine their photometric redshifts (z< 1). Analysis of the light concentration, asymmetry and clumpiness shows that this sample is a mixed bag, containing dwarf ellipticals, early- and late-spirals, and peculiar objects which resemble mergers in progress. This result has important implications for galaxy evolution since the intermediate redshifts are the epoch when the rise in the volume-averaged star formation rate occurs.

A major goal of contemporary astrophysics is understanding the origin of the most massive galaxies in the universe, particularly nearby ellipticals and spirals. Theoretical models of galaxy formation have existed for many decades, although observational evidence at both low and high redshifts is only beginning to put constraints on different ideas. We briefly describe these observations and how they are revealing the methods by which galaxies form by contrasting and comparing fiducial rapid collapse and hierarchical formation model predictions. The available data show that cluster ellipticals must have rapidly formed at z > 2, and that up to 50% of all massive galaxies at z ~ 2.5 are involved in major mergers. While the former is consistent with the monolithic collapse picture, we argue that hierarchical formation is the only model that can reproduce all the available observations.
