In this paper we first use the distribution of the number of records to demonstrate that the right tail probabilities of counts of rare events are generally better approximated by the right tail probabilities of a Poisson distribution than those of the normal distribution. We then show that the moderate deviations in Poisson approximation generally require an adjustment and, with suitable adjustment, we establish better error estimates of the moderate deviations in Poisson approximation than those in [18]. Our estimates contain no unspecified constants and are easy to apply. We illustrate the use of the theorems via six applications: Poisson-binomial distribution, the matching problem, the occupancy problem, the birthday problem, random graphs, and 2-runs. The paper complements the works [16], [8], and [18].

This paper concerns the asymptotic behavior of a random variable Wλ resulting from the summation of the functionals of a Gibbsian spatial point process over windows Qλ ↑ ℝd. We establish conditions ensuring that Wλ has volume order fluctuations, i.e. they coincide with the fluctuations of functionals of Poisson spatial point processes. We combine this result with Stein's method to deduce rates of a normal approximation for Wλ as λ → ∞. Our general results establish variance asymptotics and central limit theorems for statistics of random geometric and related Euclidean graphs on Gibbsian input. We also establish a similar limit theory for claim sizes of insurance models with Gibbsian input, the number of maximal points of a Gibbsian sample, and the size of spatial birth-growth models with Gibbsian input.

Melamed's theorem states that, for a Jackson queueing network, the equilibrium flow along a link follows a Poisson distribution if and only if no customers can travel along the link more than once. Barbour and Brown (1996) considered the Poisson approximate version of Melamed's theorem by allowing the customers a small probability p of travelling along the link more than once. In this note, we prove that the customer flow process is a Poisson cluster process and then establish a general approximate version of Melamed's theorem that accommodates all possible cases of 0 ≤ p < 1.

Most metrics between finite point measures currently used in the literature have the flaw that they do not treat differing total masses in an adequate manner for applications. This paper introduces a new metric d̅1 that combines positional differences of points under a closest match with the relative difference in total mass in a way that fixes this flaw. A comprehensive collection of theoretical results about d̅1 and its induced Wasserstein metric d̅2 for point process distributions are given, including examples of useful d̅1-Lipschitz continuous functions, d̅2 upper bounds for the Poisson process approximation, and d̅2 upper and lower bounds between distributions of point processes of independent and identically distributed points. Furthermore, we present a statistical test for multiple point pattern data that demonstrates the potential of d̅1 in applications.

The distributions of the run occurrences for a sequence of independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) experiments are usually obtained by combinatorial methods (see Balakrishnan and Koutras (2002, Chapter 5)) and the resulting formulae are often very tedious, while the distributions for non i.i.d. experiments are generally intractable. It is therefore of practical interest to find a suitable approximate model with reasonable approximation accuracy. In this paper we demonstrate that the negative binomial distribution is the most suitable approximate model for the number of k-runs: it outperforms the Poisson approximation, the general compound Poisson approximation as observed in Eichelsbacher and Roos (1999), and the translated Poisson approximation in Rollin (2005). In particular, its accuracy of approximation in terms of the total variation distance improves when the number of experiments increases, in the same way as the normal approximation improves in the Berry-Esseen theorem.

In this paper, we adapt the very effective Berry-Esseen theorems of Chen and Shao (2004), which apply to sums of locally dependent random variables, for use with randomly indexed sums. Our particular interest is in random variables resulting from integrating a random field with respect to a point process. We illustrate the use of our theorems in three examples: in a rather general model of the insurance collective; in problems in geometrical probability involving stabilizing functionals; and in counting the maximal points in a two-dimensional region.

We provide a probabilistic proof of the Stein's factors based on properties of birth and death Markov chains, solving a tantalizing puzzle in using Markov chain knowledge to view the celebrated Stein–Chen method for Poisson approximations. This work complements the work of Barbour (1988) for the case of Poisson random variable approximation.

Stein's method is used to prove approximations in total variation to the distributions of integer valued random variables by (possibly signed) compound Poisson measures. For sums of independent random variables, the results obtained are very explicit, and improve upon earlier work of Kruopis (1983) and Čekanavičius (1997); coupling methods are used to derive concrete expressions for the error bounds. An example is given to illustrate the potential for application to sums of dependent random variables.

Criteria are determined for the variance to mean ratio to be greater than one (over-dispersed) or less than one (under-dispersed). This is done for random variables which are functions of a Markov chain in continuous time, and for the counts in a simple point process on the line. The criteria for the Markov chain are in terms of the infinitesimal generator and those for the point process in terms of the conditional intensity. Examples include a conjecture of Faddy (1994). The case of time-reversible point processes is particularly interesting, and here underdispersion is not possible. In particular, point processes which arise from Markov chains which are time-reversible, have finitely many states and are irreducible are always overdispersed.

This note gives the rate for a Wasserstein distance between the distribution of a Bernoulli process on discrete time and that of a Poisson process, using Stein's method and Palm theory. The result here highlights the possibility that the logarithmic factor involved in the upper bounds established by Barbour and Brown (1992) and Barbour et al. (1995) may be superfluous in the true Wasserstein distance between the distributions of a point process and a Poisson process.
