A general strategy for the design of high nitrogen systems with an adequate degree of stability has been elaborated. The design of nitro compounds in which terminal nitro groups are bonded to the chain of several heteroatoms is a specific case within the strategy. In the process of working out the strategy a number of new high nitrogen systems ( dinitrazenic acid or dinitroamide HN3O4 and it salts, nitrodiazene oxides RN3O3 and tetrazine dioxides ) were discovered.
A number of new types of nitro compounds (bicyclo nitro-bis-hydroxylamine, nitrohydrazine, nitrohydroxylamine, sulfo-N-nitroimide and bis-N-nitroimide were synthesized.
This study opens new prospects in the field of the synthesis of high energy materials.
