This article examines the diffusion of technological innovation within the California wine industry by studying the adoption of ozone-cleaning technology. The paper compares ozone with other sanitizing systems and reviews current perspectives on innovation diffusion and adoption before describing and analyzing the results of a 2007 industry survey completed by 128 California wineries. We find that the decision to adopt ozone-cleaning technology was correlated with its economic advantages but not with either demographics of decision makers or variables indicative of a winery's ability to absorb new information. Summary
The role of armed forces in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HA/DR) is highly relevant for several reasons. The first is due to the increasing salience of HA/DR issues in the Asia Pacific, especially given the extreme propensity the region has for natural disasters and the extent of urban agglomerations, both of which mean that the scale of disaster is likely to be large and to require all available resources to respond. Given this, it makes sense for regional armed forces to examine how they can contribute effectively when called upon. The second reason, directly relevant to the Five Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA), is because FPDA ministers have called for an examination of the issue and its applicability for the armed forces of member states. The call is not surprising given the first point and the fact that the FPDA as an institution has always been prepared to evolve to meet the needs of a changing geopolitical and operational environment.
In examining HA/DR issues, the FPDA is following a now relatively common line which sees ever more consideration of the use of armed forces in non-traditional, non-war fighting roles. In 2008, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) published a study of the effectiveness of the armed forces in disaster response. Two years later the UK-based international conference centre Wilton Park ran a disaster management conference with a session dealing with the role of armed forces in disaster risk reduction, (an HA/DR issue). Both the ASEAN Regional Forum and the ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting Plus (ADMM- Plus) have begun to consider how HA/DR issues might be incorporated into military activities and capabilities, and the Western Pacific Naval Symposium devoted its 2011 session to HA/DR issues. Nonetheless, merely because the issue is salient is not in itself a sufficient reason for the FPDA to undertake tasks in this area; it is though a reason for a more systematic examination of the relevant factors.

Mitochondrial chloramphenicol and oligomycin resistance mutations were used to investigate mitochondrial inheritance in A. nidulans. Mitochondrial RFLPs could not be used to distinguish between paternal and maternal mitochondria because none were detected in the 54 isolates investigated. Several thousand ascospores from each of 111 hybrid cleistothecia from 21 different crosses between 7 heterokaryon incompatible isolates were tested for biparental inheritance. All mitochondrial inheritance was strictly uniparental. Not one instance of paternal inheritance of mitochondria was observed. The implications of our results for the theory that uniparental inheritance evolved to avoid cytoplasmic conflictare discussed. Possible explanations for the maintenance of strict uniparental inheritance of mitochondria in an inbreeding homothallic organism are suggested. The chloramphenicol resistance marker was inherited preferentially to the oligomycin resistance marker probably due to the inhibited energy production of mitochondria with the oligomycin resistance mutation. The maternal parent was determined for 93 hybrid cleistothecia from 17 crosses between 7 different strains. Contraryto previous reports A. nidulans strains functioned as both maternal and paternal parent in most crosses.

Summary
Introduction
New Zealand did not “discover” Southeast Asia (to the extent that one can speak of “Southeast Asia”) until well after the end of World War II and thus, did not have much to do with the region in any way before then. Indeed, there was early senior level scepticism about the region. In 1953 future Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Frank Corner (then External Affairs Officer in New Zealand's High Commission in London), could write to the then Secretary, Alister McIntosh, that “we only stand to lose in South East Asia … our present limited interest in South East Asia, shown in our contribution to the Colombo Plan, has already cost us a good deal of money with doubtful benefit to us or the recipients”. Perhaps fortunately, Corner's view did not prevail although it took some years before New Zealand was ready to embrace the region wholeheartedly. By 1970, New Zealand officials noted the policy “of active involvement in Asia [effectively Southeast Asia] … participating in a new move to develop regional groupings[which was in its] early stages [and] widened the scope for us to influence Asian political thinking”.
International organizations generally were themselves also the subject of some early scepticism. As early as 1947 New Zealand Ambassador to the United States, Carl Berendesen, noted the proliferation of “United Nations and other commissions, missions, committees, conferences and so forth. I think there is a serious risk of the whole thing getting quite out of hand”. That attitude has not been unusual over the years as New Zealand has attempted to balance the costs of participating in international and regional organizations with the benefits of that participation. In practice, New Zealand has always committed itself to international organizations reluctantly, continually worrying whether value for money would be gained by membership or whether attendance would merely perpetuate talk at the expense of substantive and beneficial action. This reluctance is curious when balanced with the knowledge that New Zealand has only limited ability to achieve its international ends unless it does work through international organizations.
New Zealand's relationships with Southeast Asia's regional organizations may be considered in terms of two perhaps three distinct but overlapping phases.
