Summary
This chapter will consider the character and role of antisystemic movements in Immanuel Wallerstein's theorization of the modern world-system. It will trace Wallerstein's engagements with this question particularly since the appearance of the “movement of movements” against neoliberal globalization in the late 1990s, when he argued that the struggle for a better social world could be framed by the alternative between the “spirit of Davos” and the “spirit of Porto Alegre.” The chapter will consider Wallerstein's twenty-first century arguments relative to his classical elaboration of the subject and consider their contributions and limitations for this era of antisystemic social mobilization.
Throughout his long life, Immanuel Wallerstein was attentive to what he called “antisystemic movements” as central to diagnosing prospects for progressive transformation in and beyond the current world-system. World-systems analysis (WSA), as it has been constructed by Wallerstein as its leading architect, is normative, strategic and politically invested in its historical analysis and its prognoses for the future of antisystemic struggle. Antisystemic movements are thus central to what Wallerstein termed utopistics, or “the serious assessment of historical alternatives” to the current world-system (Wallerstein 1998, 1).
In this chapter, I review the character and role of antisystemic movements in Wallerstein's theorization of the modern world-system as they appear in his classic treatment (1990; as well as 2004, 2014). Through a comparative dialogue with the “contentious politics” tradition which has come to dominate the field, I consider the contribution of WSA to analyzing social movements, while also observing that Wallerstein replicates some problematic patterns and assumptions common to modern social theory, notably its Eurocentrism. I then turn to Wallerstein's later writings in the context of the Global Justice movements, especially his engagements with the World Social Forum (WSF) process, where he was confronted with a recomposition of the global left (Santos 2006), including “indigenista” movements arising from the exteriority of modernity or “colonial difference” (Mignolo 2002; see also Escobar 2007).
The WSF is the historical reference point for Wallerstein's exhortation of the “spirit of Porto Alegre” over against the “spirit of Davos” in contemporary struggles over a successor world-system.

People with dementia living in residential care often face the dual disadvantage of increasing difficulty with communication and reduced opportunities for conversation. Social interaction is central to wellbeing of residents with dementia, so it is important that care staff have the skills to engage in conversation with them. We studied conversations in 20 care staff–resident dyads, to examine conversation structure and content, patterns of engagement within conversations, including the topics around which engagement occurred, and communication behaviours by care staff that appeared to facilitate (or impede) participation by residents. The transcripts were analysed using Discursis, a computational information visualisation tool that allows interactive visual inspection, in context, of the contributions by each speaker, the turn-taking dynamics, and the content recurring within and between speakers. We present case examples (a) where care staff did most of the talking, initiated topics and were responsible for most recurrence of content; (b) where talk was more evenly shared between partners, with some topics initiated and/or elaborated by participants with dementia; and (c) where participants with dementia talked most, with care staff supporting the conversation. We identified accommodative strategies used by care staff, such as reflecting back the other person's responses to sustain engagement. We also noted care staff behaviours that impeded communication, such as not listening attentively and not allowing sufficient time for responses. The results from this study highlight aspects of social communication within the aged care context and suggest ways in which rewarding interactions between staff and residents with dementia might be encouraged.

Halo blight resistance was transferred in a backcrossing programme from PI 150414 to a Michigan-type bean. The resistant selections obtained gave yields that were up to 10% higher than that of cv. Seafarer and had seed of good quality that was suitable for baking in tomato sauce. These selections were also resistant to the common strains of bean common mosaic virus (BCMV) and to the lambda race of anthracnose.
In addition, selections with white seed of similar size to Seafarer were obtained from crosses between Seafarer and cold-tolerant lines with large, coloured seeds. In trials over 4 years these selections gave 20% higher yields than Seafarer and were less sensitive to environmental changes. Like Seafarer, they were homozygous for the I gene for resistance to BCMV but were susceptible to halo blight and anthracnose. Although not as suitable for canning in tomato sauce as other material in the National Vegetable Research Station programme, they offer useful parental material for further cycles of breeding.

The Bugscope project is an educational outreach program for kindergarten to grade 12 (K–12) classrooms. The project provides a resource to classrooms so that they may remotely operate a scanning electron microscope to image insects at high magnification. The microscope is remotely controlled in real time from a classroom computer over the Internet using a Web browser. Bugscope provides a state-of-the-art microscope resource for teachers that can be readily integrated into classroom activities. The Bugscope project provides a low-cost, sustainable model for research groups to support K–12 education outreach projects.
