This study assessed the tolerance of ‘Midlawn’ (Cynodon dactylon × C. transvaalensis) and ‘OKS 91-11’ (C. dactylon) bermudagrass to commonly used postemergence herbicides and compared visual assessment with vehicle-mounted optical sensing (V-MOS) for evaluating herbicide phytotoxicity. Two postemergence herbicides were applied to mature stands of Midlawn and OKS 91-11 at two and four times label rates, and seven postemergence herbicides were applied at standard and two times label rates. Visual evaluation and spectral assessments were made for turf color 2, 7, 14, and 21 d after treatment (DAT). Triclopyr and triclopyr plus clopyralid at 2× and 4× label rates caused significant damage on OKS 91-11 and Midlawn bermudagrass in both July and September experiments. MSMA at 2× rate and MSMA + metribuzin at 1× and 2× rate caused up to 73% color reductions that disappeared within 21 DAT in both cultivars. During July, 2,4-D plus mecoprop plus dicamba at the 2× rate caused at least 18% injury to Midlawn bermudagrass for 21 d. Metribuzin was safe at the 1× rate but caused significant injury for up to 7 d at the 2× rate. Imazaquin and halosulfuron-methyl each caused significant damage on one rating date. Pronamide caused no change in color regardless of rate or time of application. OKS 91-11 tolerated 2× rates of 2,4-D plus mecoprop plus dicamba better than Midlawn, but cultivar responses to other herbicide treatments were similar. V-MOS was effective for measuring green color reduction on bermudagrass turf. V-MOS and visual evaluation were linearly related (P < 0.01) at a strength of r = 0.58. Statistical results obtained using visual rating and V-MOS were the same in 86% of all cases.

We have recently used the atmospheric air-shower Cerenkov technique in an attempt to observe pulsed gamma radiation from two southern pulsars, PSR 0833—45 and MP 0959. Northern hemisphere observers do not agree whether the pulsars CP 0950, CP 1133 and CP 1919 are sources of gamma emission, either pulsed or uniform in time.

This essay provides a revisionary interpretation of one of the most important treatments of emotion (and its relation to reason) in the early period of modern European vernacular literature, Guido Cavalcanti's “Donna me prega” (“A Lady Asks Me”). According to the prevailing interpretation, the poem denigrates love as an animal power, a subhuman force that destroys our properly human rationality. Reading the poem's treatment of love in the light of Averroës's views, especially as presented in his Long Commentary on Aristotle's De anima, reveals that Cavalcanti celebrates love as paradigmatic of human reason, part and parcel of one's leading a rational and therefore human life. Love, the operation of a rational power that is mortal (not immortal) and natural (not supernatural), is for human beings the “perfect good,” the full extent of our flourishing and the best for which we can hope.

Summary
Ramon Llull – vir phantasticus (crazy man); doctor illuminatus (enlightened doctor); arabicus christianus (Arabic Christian); philosophus barbatus (bearded philosopher); “founder of Catalan prose and one of Catalonia’s greatest medieval writers” (Bonner in Llull, Doctor 45); “author of a vast number of works – 265 according to the latest catalogue of works – on countless subjects and in numerous literary forms” (45); “the first European to write prose novels on contemporary themes” (1); author of the million-word Book of Contemplation (written first in Arabic – all of Llull’s Arabic writings have been lost or were destroyed – then in Catalan) – was able “to elaborate a theory of the universe which, of all medieval theories, came closest to a general hypothesis which should explain all observable phenomena” (Hillgarth 17). Furthermore, Llull, who is also recognized as one of the founders of the European study of Near Eastern languages, established in 1276 an Arabic language school in Miramar on Majorca, and in 1311 he successfully petitioned the Church Council of Vienne to establish chairs of Arabic at the Universities of Paris, Louvain, and Salamanca.
If Llull is less known today than he perhaps ought to be, this fall into relative obscurity is a rather recent phenomenon. As Peers remarked concerning Llull’s fame through the eighteenth century, “there really were those who could take seriously the refrain: ‘Tres sabios hubo en el mundo, / Adán, Salomón y Raymundo’ [There have been three wise men in the world / Adam, Solomon, and Ramon], and there were even those who could quote the notorious remark, attributed to one Père Rossell, that the Old Testament was the work of God the Father, the New Testament of God the Son, and the writings of Ramon of God the Holy Spirit” (402).
