Analyzing technological patterns and source provenance of stone tools, Jones, Beck, Jones, and Hughes (2003) argue that Paleoarchuic groups of the central Great Basin moved within an extensive home range, perhaps reaching 400 km in its longest dimension. The Eastern Conveyance Zone, as they refer to this territory, was aligned with the predominantly north-south trending mountains and valleys of the province. To evaluate this model of mobility, artifacts were collected from the southern part of the Eastern Conveyance Zone for geochemical characterizations. X-ray fluorescence spectrometry of 183 obsidian and fine-grained volcanic artifacts identified 12 known rock sources, all from the southern and central sections of the zone. No northern sources are represented among artifacts studied. Revisions of the Eastern Conveyance Zone model are considered in light of these results.

Summary
Black holes are a continuing source of mystery. Although their classical properties have been understood since the 1970's, their quantum properties raise some of the deepest questions in theoretical physics. Some of these questions have recently been answered using string theory. I will review these fundamental questions, and the aspects of string theory needed to answer them. I will then explain the recent developments and new insights into black holes that they provide. Some remaining puzzles are mentioned in the conclusion.
Introduction
General properties of black holes were studied extensively in the early 1970's, and the basic theory was developed. One of the key results was Hawking's proof that the area of a black hole cannot decrease (Hawking 1971). This led Bekenstein (1973) to suggest that a black hole should have an entropy proportional to its horizon area. This suggestion of a connection between black holes and thermodynamics was strengthened by the formulation of the laws of black-hole mechanics (Bardeen et al. 1973). In addition to the total mass M, angular momentum J, and horizon area A of the black holes, these laws are formulated in terms of the angular velocity of the horizon Ω, and its surface gravity k. Recall that the surface gravity is the force at infinity required to hold a unit mass stationary near the horizon of a black hole.

Summary
ABSTRACT
If string theory describes nature, then charged black holes are not described by the Reissner-Nordström solution. This solution must be modified to include a massive dilaton. In the limit of vanishing dilaton mass, the new solution can be found by a generalization of the Harrison transformation for the Einstein-Maxwell equations. These two solution generating transformations and the resulting black holes are compared. It is shown that the extremal black hole with massless dilaton can be viewed as the “square root” of the extremal Reissner-Nordström solution. When the dilaton mass is included, extremal black holes are repulsive, and it is energetically favorable for them to bifurcate into smaller holes.
INTRODUCTION
It is a pleasure to honor Dieter Brill on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday. Over the years, Dieter has worked on many aspects of general relativity. But two of his recent interests are negative energy (in higher dimensional theories) (Brill and Pfister 1989; Brill and Horowitz 1991), and the possibility that extremal charged black holes can quantum mechanically bifurcate (Brill 1992). I would like to describe some recent work which touches on both of these areas.
For many years, it has been widely believed that static charged black holes in nature are accurately described by the Reissner-Nordström solution.
