Diapause induction in Heliothis armigera (Hb.) from the Sudan Gezira was investigated under controlled conditions. A maximum incidence of diapause occurred in response to exposure to low temperature (22°C) and short daylength (12 h) during the larval stage. However, the prepupal and early pupal stages were also sensitive to temperature; if they were exposed to 26°C, diapause was averted. After more than two months at low temperature, some pupae remained in diapause for more than two months after transfer to high temperature (34°C) and only commenced developing when the temperature was lowered again. This may provide a mechanism to bridge the hot dry season and to synchronise emergence with the start of the rainy season. A high incidence of diapause in H. fletcheri (Hardwick) was observed to occur at the end of the rainy season under ambient conditions in the Sudan. Emergence from these diapause pupae occurred in the following rainy season. The different phenologies of diapause in the two species are discussed in relation to their distribution in rain-fed and irrigated vegetation in the Sudan.

The relationship between initial population density of Globodera pallida and yield was examined for five genotypes of potato at four different experimental sites; two in Scotland and two in England. The experiments at each site were conducted in two stages. The experimental area was first manipulated using resistant and susceptible potato cultivars to give plots with different nematode population densities to act as the initial populations (Pi) for the second stage. The main experiment was conducted using a range of host genotypes that differed in their tolerance and susceptibility. The utility of an inverse linear model relating yield to initial population density was confirmed as were differences in cultivar tolerance. Site differences in yield loss were also observed. It was found that the model could be modified to include the partitioning of genotype and site effects. The implications of this in terms of developing further models to predict yield loss and nematode population dynamics are discussed.

Summary
Summary
38 hypertensive Canadian steelworkers who were neither compliant with medications nor at goal diastolic blood-pressure six months after starting treatment were allocated either to a control group or to an experimental group who were taught how to measure their own blood-pressures, asked to chart their home blood-pressures and pill taking, and taught how to tailor pill taking to their daily habits and rituals; these men were also seen fortnightly by a high-school graduate with no formal health professional training who reinforced the experimental manoeuvres and rewarded improvements in compliance and blood-pressure. Six months later, average compliance had fallen by 1.5% in the control group but rose 21.3% in the experimental group. Blood-pressures fell in 17 of 20 experimental patients (to goal in 6) and in 10 of 18 control patients (to goal in 2).
Introduction
The potential benefit of vigorous medical treatment for hypertension often remains out of reach, in part because the patient does not comply with treatment. We believe that this non-compliance is a major barrier to the effective control of hypertension and that our understanding of this phenomenon is primitive. In phase I of a trial of strategies for improving compliance we found that neither the mastery of facts about hypertension nor receiving care and follow-up at work in “company time” led to any improvement. We describe here the second phase of this trial in which the application of more behaviourally oriented strategies did lead to improvements in both compliance and blood-pressure control.
Methods
These have been described in detail elsewhere. Briefly, the examination of 5400 men at Dominion Foundries and Steel Company (over 95% of a random two-thirds sample of male employees) yielded 245 who had high blood-pressures (when sitting quietly on three separate days, a standard series of fifth-phase diastolic blood-pressure were ≥95 mm Hg), were free of remediable forms of hypertension, were taking no daily medications (70 men were on treatment and were therefore excluded), and had not been treated for hypertension in the preceding six months.
In phase I of this trial, men were randomly allocated into a factorial design in order to test strategies affecting either the convenience of their follow-up care or their knowledge about hypertension and its treatment.

Fifty patients suffering from the alcohol dependence syndrome were detoxified over a 10-day period using a reducing regime of chlordiazepoxide. Twenty-four had been consuming minor tranquillisers together with alcohol prior to admission. The severity of the withdrawal syndrome was assessed daily but no differences were found between the 26 who had taken alcohol alone and the 24 who had taken a combination of alcohol and drugs. Four from each group had a transient hallucinosis and none had fits.
