Summary
The National Memorial for Peace and Justice was conceived and developed by Bryan Stevenson and the Equal Justice Institute in Birmingham, Alabama, to remember the history of lynching Black people as well as how the practice of lynching morphed into the contemporary incarceration and capital punishment of Black people. When one visits this memorial, there are plaques that tell a brief story for each lynched Black person for whom the Equal Justice Institute was able to find a record. Five examples of these plaques follow:
‘Oliver Moore was lynched in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, in 1930 for frightening a white girl.’
‘David Walker, his wife, and their four children were lynched in Hickman, Kentucky, in 1908 after Mr. Walker was accused of using inappropriate language with a white woman.’
‘Frank Dodd was lynched in DeWitt, Arkansas, in 1916 for annoying a white woman.’
‘Mary Turner, eight months pregnant, was lynched in Georgia in 1918 for publicly speaking out against her husband's lynching the day before.’
‘Laura Nelson was raped and lynched in Okema, Oklahoma, in 1911 for allegedly shooting a sheriff while trying to protect her son.’
While the information provided is minimal, these plaques capture a pattern of Black men, women, and children being killed for the trivial actions of breaking social norms with white women.
Historians’ writings explain this extreme pattern of punishment. Authors such as Brett (2020) and Hamad (2018, 2019) show how white women were socially constructed in a way that justified both their protection from and the punishment of Black people. This protection of white women and the punishment of Black people became inextricably linked. In addition to the lynching and incarceration of Black people, white women as ‘damsels in distress’ were used to justify federal decisions that impacted many Indigenous and other people of color. Examples include the expansion of the United States, resulting in the mass killing and rapes of Indigenous people from North and Central America, limiting the immigration of Chinese men, and the internment of Japanese families (Brett, 2020). However, for the purpose of this chapter, we will focus on the duality between white femininity and Black masculinity.

The use of tritiated water to estimate total body-water content of animals experiencing recovery from under-nutrition was studied.
The time for equilibration of tritiated water (TOH), given intraperitoneally, with total body water (TBW) was determined in rabbits and in rats. As judged by the specific activity of blood water, equilibration had occurred by 76–125 min in the rabbit and did not appear to be affected by the plane of nutrition. However, between slaughter groups the specific activity of water obtained from the liver 180 min after injection of TOH was significantly different from the specific activity of water simultaneously obtained from the blood plasma. It is concluded that the liver is not a suitable tissue to use for testing achievement of equilibration.
As judged by the specific activity of blood water compared to that of water from the whole body macerate, equilibration in mature rats either in stable body condition or undergoing rapid compensatory growth occurred in less than 60 min.
A trial comparing TOH-space (corrected by 3% body weight) and actual TBW (by desiccation) was conducted on thirty rabbits which experienced under-nutrition followed by compensatory growth.
Prior to under-nutrition the agreement between actual and estimated TBW was satisfactory and within 2·3%. During compensatory growth the agreement was poor— the TOH values over-estimating actual TBW by about 12%.
A trial with mature rats confirmed the findings with rabbits. For rats in stable body weight the mean estimated TOH-space for fourteen animals was within 1·2% of the actual TBW. For fourteen rats undergoing compensatory growth the mean estimated TOH-space (corrected by 3% body weight) overestimated actual TBW by 6·2%.

Children's first school books contain a considerable amount of reported talk among characters in the stories. This is a central aspect of the characterization of these books as transitional from the conventions of oral language to the conventions of written prose, that is, as introductions to literacy. The nature of the written representation of conversation in such books has not previously been examined. This paper presents a partial analysis of this feature of beginning school readers, focussing on “question-answer sequences.” We show how these representations of talk compare with naturalistic research on child-adult interaction at home and in classrooms, and we propose that the model of child-adult talk portrayed in “home” and “school” scenes in the books appears to endorse some of the conventions for participation in instructional talk, and in this respect is implicitly a source of socialization into classroom culture. At the same time, we find that the texts give child speakers far more initiative in conversation than typically obtains in classroom talk, and this is seen also to be a feature of the social constitution of the child in these texts. Thus an image of childhood which combines conversational initiative and conversational competence as a member of the classroom community is conveyed. The paper also points out possible difficulties for child readers in interpreting the talk-on-paper, arising both from textual formats and from the particular version of the child as conversationalist which the books describe (Child-adult conversation, question-answer sequences, first school books, literacy acquisition).
