Summary
Few animals evoke such a range of attitudes in people as bears do. As large iconic predators capable of competing with humans far back in time, their stature and behaviour places them as an alien culture, often in conflict with people's endeavours. The wonderfully exact drawings of bears in the Chauvet Caves of France suggest that worship and respect for bears goes back at least 30,000 years. While indigenous people in North America have co-existed with brown bears for millennia, the proprietorial mindset of trappers, settlers and colonists from Europe succeeded in almost extinguishing the species everywhere settlement occurred. Only in national parks and remote wilderness do grizzlies survive in the contiguous United States and Canada; even there, the ebb and flow of legal battles rages on.
Among the many regions on earth where the diminishing numbers of the eight species struggle to survive, bear habitat is being lost due to the activities of billions of humans. Even where wild country is adequate for the survival of residual populations, those formerly wilderness areas suffer from human intrusion. When, because of habitat loss, bears move out into human-occupied zones there is always the potential to create conflicts. Negative impacts can also be indirect on bears in remote areas, as with polar bears, where toxic chemicals in ocean and air currents are sterilising bears and global warming continues to shrink their habitat and seal diet.
The organisers of this volume invited authors to deliver topics that will appeal to a wide international audience. Unlike many proceedings of scientific conferences and symposia on specialised aspects of bear ecology, behaviour and management, the author-editors have mapped new avenues to advance solutions. It is a most propitious time to have scholars with broad experience contribute current results from many parts of the world. The reader cannot fail to recognise how many of the threats and conflicts in human-wildlife relations are similar around the globe. Concomitant benefits from this revelation of ideas for management applications are policies that preserve bears, such as engaging local people and integrating their needs along with those of the threatened bears. This is especially well done in the cooperative work in Peru for Andean or spectacled bears. The results are heartening, indeed.

An experimental examination of the fundamental properties of free turbulent interactions in a mixing flow has been conducted. A turbulent, two-dimensional, incompressible, uniform-density mixing layer was produced by using a parallel bar grid of different bar spacings but the same space to bar diameter ratio M/D = 2. In this unique mixing-flow geometry, two initially parallel flowing streams of air were formed in such a way as to possess the same mean structure but different turbulent kinetic energy. The mixing phenomenon was driven solely by the turbulent kinetic-energy self-diffusion process.
The data showed the development of the turbulent properties without the interference caused by turbulence generated by a mean shear flow. A simple diffusion model was constructed by assuming an analogy between the unsteady gradient diffusion process and the transport of turbulent kinetic energy by the fluctuations. An empirical error function least squares curve fit, a diffusional power law and diffusion coefficients were derived. The empirical coefficients of self-diffusion were found to be 10.4 and 68.6 cm2 s−1 for the longitudinal and transverse turbulent energy components, or about a hundred and five hundred times faster than molecular viscous shear diffusion, respectively. This self-diffusion mechanism by microscale size eddies may account for some of the error found by other investigators in balancing the measured terms of the turbulent kinetic-energy equation.

This study aimed to describe clinical findings, pedigrees, and possible environmental risk factors in children with clinical anophthalmos and remnant microphthalmos in either eye in southern India. Twenty-four children (14 male, 10 female; mean age 10.3 years, age range 1.3 to 18 years,) were recruited from schools for the blind, hospitals, and community-based rehabilitation programmes in Andhra Pradesh, India, over 1 year. Family members were examined, and mothers interviewed. Fifteen children had anophthalmos and nine had remnant microphthalmos in one or both eyes. Twelve children had associated systemic findings, of which six were major and six were minor abnormalities. Information on consanguinity was available in 19 children, 12 of whom had consanguineous parents. Five children had a positive family history. Two mothers had a history of night blindness, and one had a history of pesticide exposure during pregnancy. High rates of consanguinity suggest a genetic recessive aetiology.

The practice of extending protection, or “ asylum,” within the walls of legations and consulates to refugees and unfortunates, rests upon no very satisfactory legal basis, but rather upon considerations of humanity. Though from time to time certain recognized doctrines of international law and certain doctrines of somewhat more doubtful recognition have been asserted in justification, it will be found that the so-called “ right of asylum ” is no right at all, but only a privilege granted or claimed where its use seems necessary by reason of an unstable condition of society.
