Summary
The first edition of Operating Department Practice A–Z was something of a trial run to assess demand, and the favourable response combined with positive feedback has been encouraging. The first edition was intentionally specialised, and focused narrowly on theatre practice and processes; however, the second edition has been expanded to include more medical, scientific and technical terms, in particular more anatomy and physiology. The inclusion of illustrations and expansion of the support sections will also be of value to the reader.
The modern Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) requires enhanced and broad knowledge in order to fulfil the diverse and differing requirements of the patients in their care, and this book was written with this in mind.
The curriculum for ODP learners, both before and after qualification, has broadened over the years to match the need to keep up to date with advancements in technology and knowledge, particularly of the healthcare and life sciences. By expanding the content of this book we are meeting that need and providing a companion to research and learning. The dictionary style of the first edition has been maintained but its nature does limit the detail of the explanation in the Quick Reference that can be provided. By reading the Advanced Reference and following the cross-references to the highlighted key words, the reader is guided to a more complete explanation.
