During the past decade, genetics research has allowed scientists and clinicians to explore the human genome in detail and reveal many thousands of common genetic variants associated with disease. Genetic risk scores, known as polygenic risk scores (PRSs), aggregate risk information from the most important genetic variants into a single score that describes an individual’s genetic predisposition to a given disease. This article reviews recent developments in the predictive utility of PRSs in relation to a person’s susceptibility to breast cancer and coronary artery disease. Prognostic models for these disorders are built using data from the UK Biobank, controlling for typical clinical and underwriting risk factors. Furthermore, we explore the possibility of adverse selection where genetic information about multifactorial disorders is available for insurance purchasers but not for underwriters. We demonstrate that prediction of multifactorial diseases, using PRSs, provides population risk information additional to that captured by normal underwriting risk factors. This research using the UK Biobank is in the public interest as it contributes to our understanding of predicting risk of disease in the population. Further research is imperative to understand how PRSs could cause adverse selection if consumers use this information to alter their insurance purchasing behaviour.

In this article, we explore the use of multivariate Archimedean copulas in modelling the mortality dependence between different countries and pricing mortality bonds. We study the fitting performance of multi-dimensional, fully nested, and partially nested Archimedean copulas and test 11 types of generators and two skewed distributions. To evaluate their practical usefulness, we adopt the fitted models to compute the market prices for some typical mortality bond structures. The results show that the copula assumption has a significant impact on the calculation of the prices of mortality-linked securities and the management of extreme mortality risks.

A new method of forecasting mortality is introduced. The method is based on the continuous-time dynamics of the Lexis diagram, which given weak assumptions implies that the death count data are Poisson distributed. The underlying mortality rates are modelled with a hidden Markov model (HMM) which enables a fully likelihood-based inference. Likelihood inference is done by particle filter methods, which avoids approximating assumptions and also suggests natural model validation measures. The proposed model class contains as special cases many previous models with the important difference that the HMM methods make it possible to estimate the model efficiently. Another difference is that the population and latent variable variability can be explicitly modelled and estimated. Numerical examples show that the model performs well and that inefficient estimation methods can severely affect forecasts.

The retirement systems in many developed countries have been increasingly moving from defined benefit towards defined contribution system. In defined contribution systems, financial and longevity risks are shifted from pension providers to retirees. In this paper, we use a probabilistic approach to analyse the uncertainty associated with superannuation accumulation and decumulation. We apply an economic scenario generator called the Simulation of Uncertainty for Pension Analysis (SUPA) model to project uncertain future financial and economic variables. This multi-factor stochastic investment model, based on the Monte Carlo method, allows us to obtain the probability distribution of possible outcomes regarding the superannuation accumulation and decumulation phases, such as relevant percentiles. We present two examples to demonstrate the implementation of the SUPA model for the uncertainties during both phases under the current superannuation and Age Pension policy, and test two superannuation policy reforms suggested by the Grattan Institute.

Mortality projection and forecasting of life expectancy are two important aspects of the study of demography and life insurance modelling. We demonstrate in this work the existence of long memory in mortality data. Furthermore, models incorporating long memory structure provide a new approach to enhance mortality forecasts in terms of accuracy and reliability, which can improve the understanding of mortality. Novel mortality models are developed by extending the Lee–Carter (LC) model for death counts to incorporate a long memory time series structure. To link our extensions to existing actuarial work, we detail the relationship between the classical models of death counts developed under a Generalised Linear Model (GLM) formulation and the extensions we propose that are developed under an extension to the GLM framework known in time series literature as the Generalised Linear Autoregressive Moving Average (GLARMA) regression models. Bayesian inference is applied to estimate the model parameters. The Deviance Information Criterion (DIC) is evaluated to select between different LC model extensions of our proposed models in terms of both in-sample fits and out-of-sample forecasts performance. Furthermore, we compare our new models against existing models structures proposed in the literature when applied to the analysis of death count data sets from 16 countries divided according to genders and age groups. Estimates of mortality rates are applied to calculate life expectancies when constructing life tables. By comparing different life expectancy estimates, results show the LC model without the long memory component may provide underestimates of life expectancy, while the long memory model structure extensions reduce this effect. In summary, it is valuable to investigate how the long memory feature in mortality influences life expectancies in the construction of life tables.

Initial insurance losses are often reported with a textual description of the claim. The claims manager must determine the adequate case reserve for each known claim. In this paper, we present a framework for predicting the amount of loss given a textual description of the claim using a large number of words found in the descriptions. Prior work has focused on classifying insurance claims based on keywords selected by a human expert, whereas in this paper the focus is on loss amount prediction with automatic word selection. In order to transform words into numeric vectors, we use word cosine similarities and word embedding matrices. When we consider all unique words found in the training dataset and impose a generalised additive model to the resulting explanatory variables, the resulting design matrix is high dimensional. For this reason, we use a group lasso penalty to reduce the number of coefficients in the model. The scalable, analytical framework proposed provides for a parsimonious and interpretable model. Finally, we discuss the implications of the analysis, including how the framework may be used by an insurance company and how the interpretation of the covariates can lead to significant policy change. The Poisson process is an essential building block to move up to complicated counting processes, such as the Cox (“doubly stochastic Poisson”) process, the Hawkes (“self-exciting”) process, exponentially decaying shot-noise Poisson (simply “shot-noise Poisson”) process and the dynamic contagion process. The Cox process provides flexibility by letting the intensity not only depending on time but also allowing it to be a stochastic process. The Hawkes process has self-exciting property and clustering effects. Shot-noise Poisson process is an extension of the Poisson process, where it is capable of displaying the frequency, magnitude and time period needed to determine the effect of points. The dynamic contagion process is a point process, where its intensity generalises the Hawkes process and Cox process with exponentially decaying shot-noise intensity. To facilitate the usage of these processes in practice, we revisit the distributional properties of the Poisson, Cox, Hawkes, shot-noise Poisson and dynamic contagion process and their compound processes. We provide simulation algorithms for these processes, which would be useful to statistical analysis, further business applications and research. As an application of the compound processes, numerical comparisons of value-at-risk and tail conditional expectation are made.
