The 10th annual APSA Teaching and Learning Conference in Long Beach, California, attracted more than 300 scholars in political science and related fields. Attendees discussed cutting-edge approaches, techniques, and methodologies for the political science classroom through a variety of formats including panel discussions, short-course, workshop and virtual discussion of program content. Ralph Bunche Summer Institute Funded
The 2013 APSA RBSI Program has received funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to continue the RBSI for 2013. Additional program funding is provided by Duke University and APSA. Each summer, the Institute gives 20 students a look at the world of graduate study with a program of two transferable credit courses, one in quantitative analysis and one in race and American politics, to introduce the intellectual demands of graduate school and political science research methods. For a final project for both courses, students prepare original, empirical research papers, and top students are given the opportunity to present their research at APSA's Annual Meeting. Named in honor of the 1950 Nobel Peace Prize winner and former APSA President, Ralph J. Bunche, the Ralph Bunche Summer Institute (RBSI) program goal is to encourage students to pursue academic careers in political science. Two Journals Seek Editors
Two political science journals are seeking editors.
The American Review of Politics is seeking a new editor. The review is currently published through the department of political science at the University of Arkansas. The journal covers an array of topics in American politics, but recently has focused more heavily on political parties and Southern politics. The current editorial team will publish the journal through Volume 34, which will cover the Fall 2013 and Winter 2014 issues. The new editor and staff will be responsible for soliciting manuscripts for and publication of the Spring and Summer 2014 issues. Interested individuals should provide a vita, a statement of interest describing their vision for the journal, and a letter of support from the host institution. The Southern Political Science Association invites nominations and applications for editor of the Journal of Politics. The journal publishes path-breaking research by scholars around the world in all subfields including, but not limited to, American politics; comparative politics; formal theory; international relations; methodology; political theory; public administration; and public policy. RBSI Alum Accepts Faculty Position
K. Juree Capers, APSA Ralph Bunche Summer Institute (RBSI) class of 2008, has recently accepted a faculty position as assistant professor at the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University. She will begin her appointment in the fall of 2013. Ms. Capers will graduate this summer with a PhD from Texas A&M University in political science. Her dissertation, which is funded by the American Education Research Association (AERA), examines the determinants of school desegregation and the implications of racial im(balance) on teacher and administrator behavior and student outcomes.
Her main research areas include public policy, representation, public management, race and ethnic politics. She plans on further research addressing questions related to policy implementation and outcomes within the governance framework. When on faculty at Georgia State University, Ms. Capers will teach courses on public administration and public policy topics such as education, health, and crime policy.
