Extract

On viscous, foul-smelling, bloody streams (the color of anguish and opium) which spurt out of corpses, pass strange characters dressed in wax, with noses as long as sausages, and with glass eyes; they are mounted on a kind of Japanese sandal made of double wooden slats, one vertical and the other horizontal, serving as the sole, and these protect them from the polluted fluids; they chant absurd litanies which do not stop them from sinking into the blaze in their turn.
