page 16 note 1 Commissioned by the Northern Sinfonia Orchestra and first performed by them at the Rutherford College of Technology, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, on ist May 1966. The conductor was Michael Hall. The cost of the commission was met from the Benjamin Britten Aspen Fund, set up by Benjamin Britten following the First Aspen Award, made to him in 1963. It was the first commission to be paid for out of the Fund.

page 18 note 1 Commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Society and first performed in their concert at the Royal Festival Hall on 6th April 1966. Christopher Bunting was the soloist, with the New Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Sir Malcolm Sargent. The Concerto is the first of a series of works commissioned by the Society with funds provided for the purpose by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
