Distribution functions for the intrinsic shapes of elliptical galaxies are discussed, starting with the simplest and proceeding to the more complex. A variety of competing “proxy” observables, which can in principle be used to recover at least some of information lost in the projection of a galaxy onto the plane of the sky, are considered.
