Robot intensiveness in the manufacturing industry is growing rapidly, but the construction industry has been slow to capitalise on the array of robotic technology now available. An attempt is made to indentify various robot ensembles that may prove economically viable in building construction, and to configure these in such a way that particular characteristics of robot work methods are used to maximum advantage within the constraints of the construction environment.

The degree to which a binary tactile (or visual) image matches the original object is limited by the resolution of the sensor array. Given this fundamental limitation it is still possible to minimize the error in the image formed by the interconnection of the centers of activated sensors along the object's edge. This is achieved by a suitable choice of the physical size of each sensor within the limits of the pixel size. An empirical investigation shows that normally a sensor area of about 50% of the square of the resolution yields an optimal result.

In the paper we present system-theoretic descriptions of the robot's kinematics models, in a discrete and discretized workspace. For those descriptions, the problem of planning collision-free trajectories of motion is stated and represented as a classical problem of optimizing the behaviour of dynamical system.

In a 1985 issue of this journal, Kusiak presented a formulation of the single period station loading problem related to planning of Flexible Manufacturing Systems. This note makes several observations about this formulation and the linear programming solution technique used. Possible variations and some structural properties of the fomulation are highlighted.

In this paper we show that a robot manipulator with 6 degrees of freedom can be separated into two parts: arm with the first three joints for major positioning and wrist with the last three joints for major orienting. We propose 5 arms and 2 wrists as basic construction for commercially robot manipulators. This kind of simplification can lead to a general algorithm of inverse kinematics for the corresponding configuration of different combinations of arm and wrist. The approaches for numerical solution and closed form solution presented in this paper are very efficient and easy for calculating the inverse kinematics of robot manipulator.

This paper presents a new program package for the generation of efficient manipulator kinematic and dynamic equations in symbolic form.

The basic algorithm belongs to the class of customized algorithms that reduce the computational burden by taking into account the specific characteristics of the manipulator to be modelled. The output of the package is high-level computer program code for evaluation of various kinematic and dynamic variables: the homogeneous transformation matrix between the hand and base coordinate frame, Jacobian matrices, driving torques and the elements of dynamic model matrices. The dynamic model is based on the recursive Newton-Euler equations. The application of recursive symbolic relations yields nearly minimal numerical complexity. Further improvement of computational efficiency is achieved by introducing different computational rates for the terms depending on joint angles, velocities and accelerations. A comparative study of numerical complexity for several typical industrial robots is presented.

In the paper a formal model is presented of the discrete control of a bile robot moving over a plane. The model synthesis has been directed in such a way as to justify the use as a controller of the automaton with internal and external parameters. It has been shown that, while controlled in discrete time the mobile robot performance can be expressed by a one-sidely optimized tree of a two-person extensive game. The tree, after transforming into the form of the state diagram of an automaton, serves as a basis for the synthesis of the automaton with internal and external parameters playing the role of a controller. A method is presented of synthesizing an automaton of this type, being a hardware realization of the mobile robot controller.

In research and industry, there are many situations where components or samples are moved between processes or measurement stations. Where the sample throughput is low, or the application is unique, it may not be cost-effective to custom design a system. In order to allow automation in these cases, an approach which uses a family of components to construct a manipulator has been developed. Reliability and long term availability are major requirements of the system described.

The goal of a sophisticated robot programming system is the ability to accept natural language input, such as English, and be able to convert this to a series of robot commands that will achieve the desired robot movement. This paper first examines what is meant by the concept of natural language understanding. Then a bottom-up development of a model of a robot system identifies the levels of control in a robot system and the role of software at each of these. This is related to the various models of software hierarchy that have been proposed by different authors and an essential deviation from these at the object level (or sub-task level) is identified. Finally, a new route is proposed that should be taken in defining the levels of software if intelligent programming of robots is to be achieved.

The general problem of including impulse effects in Lagrangian dynamics is discussed. A self-consistent method is developed, and a block-diagram representation, including initial conditions, is introduced that displays the feature of the method. Example of a collision of two dissimilar robots is provided for illustration.
