^{page 195 note *} Jerome's own account of this famous Preface to his Version of the Scriptures is as follows:- “Hie prologus, Seripturarum quasi galeatum prineipium, omnibus libris quos do hebræo vertimus in Latinum convenire potest.” Does he mean by that a cap that would fit any head—or does he refer to the defensive attitude therein assumed towards his detractors ? The former interpretation seems best to fit both Jerome's own words and also the position of the Preface in this MS.

^{page 196 note *} It is perhaps worthy of remark that in the passage of Job (c. 19, 24) falsely supposed to contain the word celte, this manuscript has the correct reading certe. (See Proc. vii. 394–402). This is pro tanta a proof of its belonging rather to an earlier than a later dater. Indeed Mr. E. A. Bond, P.S.A. Principal Librarian of the British Museum, does not hesitate to place it as early as the middle of the thirteenth century.
