At temperatures and densities that are typical of plasmas produced by lasers pulses interacting with solid targets, at power intensities I > 1012W/cm2, the classical Debye screening factor in nuclear reactions becomes comparable with the one of the solar core. Preliminary calculations about the total number of fusion reactions have been performed following an hydrodynamical approach for the description of the plasma dynamics. This approach is propaedeutic for future measurements of D-D fusion reaction rates.

In this contribution, I briefly review our empirical knowledge of disks around ≲2M⊙ pre-main sequence (T Tauri) stars, focusing first on the dichotomic question of their frequency before moving on to some more detailed disk properties (overall orientation, total mass, outer radius). Finally, I conclude with a brief discussion of disks around embedded protostars, which will play in the next few years a major role in testing star formation theory and simulations.

Recent observations of coronal loops in solar active regions show that their heating must be a truly dynamic process. Even though it seems clear that the energy source is the magnetic field that confines the coronal plasma, the details of how it dissipates are still a matter of debate. In this presentation we review the theoretical models of coronal heating, which have been traditionally clasified as DC or AC depending on the electrodynamic response of the loops to the photospheric driving motions.

Also, we show results from numerical simulations of the internal dynamics of coronal loops within the framework of the reduced MHD approximation. These simulations indicate that the application of a stationary velocity field at the photospheric boundary leads to a turbulent stationary regime after several photospheric turnover times. Once this turbulent regime is set, both DC and AC stresses dissipate at faster rates as a result of a direct energy cascade.

The CoRoT space telescope is detecting planets with the transit method for more than four years. Its tally includes hot jupiter planets with orbital periods up to 95 days but also the first Super-Earth, CoRoT-7b, whose density is similar to the Earth's one, as well as close-in brown dwarfs. We review the status of the CoRoT/Exoplanet program, including some elements of the multi step strategy of complementary observations. We then present some of the CoRoT exoplanetary systems and how they widen the range of properties of the close-in low mass population and contribute to our understanding of the properties of planets.

Galileo realized that the four moons he discovered, besides supporting the heliocentric system, could also serve as a clock in the sky for longitude determination. Navigation at sea by this method did not prove practical but G. Cassini used it to improve land mapping. O. Rømer discovered that the interval between eclipses of the moons by Jupiter increased or decreased according to whether the Earth moved away from or toward Jupiter. He attributed this to the finite speed of light which he in 1676 determined with an error of about 25%. Timings of the eclipses by Jupiter have served to compute accurate orbits of the moons, notably by means of R. A. Sampson's theory of 1921. Beginning in 1973, light curves of mutual eclipses and occultations between pairs of moons have been made regularly at six years intervals. From these observations very accurate radii and positions of the moons have been obtained.

A recent progress in the study of γ-ray jets is reviewed, with a focus on some theoretical interpretations of the VHE emission from M87, and possibly other misaligned blazars; the connection between the GeV breaks exhibited by bright LAT blazars and opacity sources in the broad line region; the consequences of the detection of GeV emission from GRBs to models of magnetic outflows; and the implications of the thermal emission observed is some GRBs to dissipation of the outflow bulk energy.

When stars like our Sun are young they rotate rapidly and are very magnetically active. We explore dynamo action in rapidly rotating suns with the 3-D MHD anelastic spherical harmonic (ASH) code. The magnetic fields built in these dynamos are organized on global-scales into wreath-like structures that span the convection zone. Wreath-building dynamos can undergo quasi-cyclic reversals of polarity and such behavior is common in the parameter space we have been able to explore. These dynamos do not appear to require tachoclines to achieve their spatial or temporal organization. Wreath-building dynamos are present to some degree at all rotation rates, but are most evident in the more rapidly rotating simulations.

We have mapped the nearby face-on spiral galaxy M 33 in the 1.1 mm dust continuum using AzTEC on Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE). The preliminary results are presented here. The observed dust has a characteristic temperature of ~ 21 K in the central kpc, radially declining down to ~ 13 K at the edge of the star forming disk. We compare the dust temperatures with KS band flux and star formation tracers. Our results imply that cold dust heating may be driven by long-lived stars even nearby star forming regions.

While theoretical studies have long suggested a fast-rotating nature of Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs), observational confirmation of fast rotation was not detected until recently. Here I discuss the diagnostics that have allowed us to constrain the rotational velocity of LBVs: broadening of spectral lines and latitude-dependent variations of the wind density structure. While rotational broadening can be directly detected using high-resolution spectroscopy, long-baseline near-infrared interferometry is needed to directly measure the shape of the latitude-dependent photosphere that forms in a fast-rotating star. In addition, complex 2-D radiative transfer models need to be employed if one's goal is to constrain rotational velocities of LBVs. Here I illustrate how the above methods were able to constrain the rotational velocities of the LBVs AG Carinae, HR Carinae, and Eta Carinae.

Extinction maps at 8μm from the Spitzer Space Telescope show that many Class 0 protostars exhibit complex, irregular, and non-axisymmetric structure within the densest regions of their dusty envelopes. Many of the systems have highly irregular and non-axisymmetric morphologies on scales ~1000 AU, with a quarter of the sample exhibiting filamentary or flattened dense structures. Complex envelope structure is observed in regions spatially distinct from outflow cavities, and the densest structures often show no systematic alignment perpendicular to the cavities. We suggest that the observed envelope complexity is the result of collapse from protostellar cores with initially non-equilibrium structures. The striking non-axisymmetry in many envelopes could provide favorable conditions for the formation of binary systems. We then show that the kinematics around L1165 as probed with N2H+ are indicative of asymmetric infall; the velocity gradient is not perpendicular to the outflow.

Large regions of protoplanetary discs are believed to be too weakly ionised to support magnetorotational instabilities, because abundant tiny dust grains soak up free electrons and reduce the conductivity of the gas. At the outer edge of this “dead zone”, the ionisation fraction increases gradually and the resistivity drops until the magnetorotational instability can develop turbulence. We identify a new viscous instability which operates in the semi-turbulent transition region between “dead” and “alive” zones. The strength of the saturated turbulence depends strongly on the local resistivity in this transition region. A slight increase (decrease) in dust density leads to a slight increase (decrease) in resistivity and a slight decrease (increase) in turbulent viscosity. Such spatial variation in the turbulence strength causes a mass pile-up where the turbulence is weak, leading to a run-away process where turbulence is weakened and mass continues to pile up. The final result is the appearance of high-amplitude pressure bumps and deep pressure valleys. Here we present a local linear stability analysis of weakly ionised accretion discs and identify the linear instability responsible for the pressure bumps. A paper in preparation concerns numerical results which confirm and expand the existence of the linear instability.

We show one of possible directions of general relativistic MHD (GRMHD) calculations of astrophysical relativistic jet formation. This was motivated by observations of radio knot ejections associated with high energy flares of an AGN in M87 and micro-quasars. We introduce a modified version of a solar flare model for the phenomenon. In the model, we have to consider a process beyond the ideal GRMHD. Especially, we focus on the special features of general relativistic plasmas around rotating black holes.

Mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectra from ~5 to 14 μm of five, nearby (< 70 Mpc) elliptical galaxies are presented that were observed with the Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope. The sample galaxies have a main stellar component that is typical for normal, passively evolving ellipticals; however, they are rich in cold gas and dust and have morphological-merger signatures from which a time order of the galaxies since the merger or accretion events can be estimated. The presented results are significant because (1) emission due to Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and associated species is detected for the first time in these galaxies and (2) the detected mid-IR spectra are independently exploited as a probe of current or recent star-formation that, in this case, is assumed to be triggered by the merger. As shown in exemplary spectra of the early-age merger NGC 3656, the strength of the PAH emission is more centrally peaked in the earlier-age mergers, suggesting that the PAH data are indeed probing star-formation that is correlated with the time since the mergers and systematically depletes the centrally located gas, becoming weaker and more flatly distributed as the merger evolves.

The automated detection of solar features is a technique which is relatively underused but if we are to keep up with the flow of data from spacecraft such as the recently launched Solar Dynamics Observatory, then such techniques will be very valuable to the solar community. Automated detection techniques allow us to examine a large set of data in a consistent way and in relatively short periods of time allowing for improved statistics to be carried out on any results obtained. This is particularly useful in the field of sunspot study as catalogues can be built with sunspots detected and tracked without any human intervention and this provides us with a detailed account of how various sunspot properties evolve over time. This article details the use of the Sunspot Tracking And Recognition Algorithm (STARA) to create a sunspot catalogue. This catalogue is then used to analyse the magnetic fields in sunspot umbrae from 1996-2010, taking in the whole of solar cycle 23.

Four hundred years ago Galileo turned his telescope to the heavens and changed the way we view the cosmos forever. Among his discoveries in January of 1610 were four new ‘stars’, following Jupiter in the sky but changing their positions with respect to the giant planet every night. Galileo showed that these ‘Medicean stars’, as he named them, were moons orbiting Jupiter in the same manner that the Earth and planets revolve about the Sun in the Copernican theory of the solar system. Over the next three centuries these moons, now collectively named the Galilean satellites after their discoverer, remained tiny dots of light in astronomers' telescopes. In the latter portion of the twentieth century Galileo's new worlds became important targets of exploration by robotic spacecraft. This paper reviews the history of this exploration through the discoveries made by the Galileo mission from 1995 to 2003, setting the stage for on-going exploration in the new century.

Theories of planet formation predict the birth of giant planets in the inner, dense, and gas-rich regions of the circumstellar disks around young stars. These are the regions from which strong CO emission is expected. Observations have so far been unable to confirm the presence of planets caught in formation. We have developed a novel method to detect a giant planet still embedded in a circumstellar disk by the distortions of the CO molecular line profiles emerging from the protoplanetary disk's surface. The method is based on the fact that a giant planet significantly perturbs the gas velocity flow in addition to distorting the disk surface density. We have calculated the emerging molecular line profiles by combining hydrodynamical models with semianalytic radiative transfer calculations. Our results have shown that a giant Jupiter-like planet can be detected using contemporary or future high-resolution near-IR spectrographs such as VLT/CRIRES or ELT/METIS. We have also studied the effects of binarity on disk perturbations. The most interesting results have been found for eccentric circumprimary disks in mid-separation binaries, for which the disk eccentricity - detectable from the asymmetric line profiles - arises from the gravitational effects of the companion star. Our detailed simulations shed new light on how to constrain the disk kinematical state as well as its eccentricity profile. Recent findings by independent groups have shown that core-accretion is severely affected by disk eccentricity, hence detection of an eccentric protoplanetary disk in a young binary system would further constrain planet formation theories.

Observations with the Solar Optical Telescope on Hinode indicate that the Quiet Sun magnetic field occurs on every scale of convection including granulation. Data reported here show that, regardless of the position on the disk, the polarity in the inner network regions are balanced to 1 part in 72. This is consistent with both local dynamo processes or the creation of surface features by the granulation downflows.

The Be star phenomenon is related to fast rotation, although the cause of this fast rotation is not yet clearly established. The basic effects of fast rotation on the stellar structure are reviewed: oblateness, mixing, anisotropic winds. The processes governing the evolution of the equatorial velocity of a single star (transport mechanisms and mass loss) are presented, as well as their metallicity dependence. The theoretical results are compared to observations of B and Be stars in the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds.
