Comparing the tropospheric zenith delays derived from VLBI and GPS data at VLBA stations collocated with GPS antenna, the systematic biases and standard deviations of the difference are both found to be at the level of a sub-centimeter. Based on this agreement, we used GPS data to correct the tropospheric effects in VLBI phase-referencing, resulting in close peak-to-noise ratios of images after tropospheric correction using GPS and VLBI data.

We have measured the distance to the high-mass star-forming region G59.7+0.1 (IRAS 19410+2336) and W3OH. Their distances, 2.20 ± 0.11 kpc and 1.95 ± 0.04 kpc, respectively, were determined by triangulation using Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of 12.2 GHz methanol masers phase-referenced to compact extragalactic radio sources. In addition to the distances, we have also obtained their proper motions.

The ESA space astrometry mission Gaia will measure the positions, parallaxes and proper motions of the 1 billion brightest stars on the sky. Expected accuracies are in the 7–25 μas range down to 15 mag and sub-mas accuracies at the faint limit (20 mag). The astrometric data are complemented by low-resolution spectrophotometric data in the 330–1000 nm wavelength range and, for the brighter stars, radial velocity measurements. The scientific case covers an extremely wide range of topics in galactic and stellar astrophysics, solar system and exoplanet science, as well as the establishment of a very accurate, dense and faint optical reference frame. With a planned launch around 2012 and an (extended) operational lifetime of 6 years, final results are expected around 2021. We give a brief overview of the science goals of Gaia, the overall project organisation, expected performance, and some key technical features and challenges.

Gaia is an ambitious space astrometry mission of ESA with a main objective to map the sky in astrometry and photometry down to a magnitude 20 by the end of the next decade. While the mission is built and operated by ESA and an industrial consortium, the data processing is entrusted to a consortium formed by the scientific community, which was formed in 2006 and formally selected by ESA one year later. The satellite will downlink around 100 TB of raw telemetry data over a mission duration of 5 years from which a very complex iterative processing will lead to the final science output: astrometry with a final accuracy of a few tens of microarcseconds, epoch photometry in wide and narrow bands, radial velocity and spectra for the stars brighter than 17 mag. We discuss the general principles and main difficulties of this very large data processing and present the organization of the European Consortium responsible for its design and implementation.

SIM PlanetQuest is a very high accuracy space astrometric instrument based on a long baseline stellar interferometer. For global astrometry SIM was designed to be accurate to ≈ 4μas (microarcsec) after a 5 year mission. For narrow angle astrometry (≈ 1000 s integration over a 1° radius field) SIM is designed for 1μas precision. The technology program was completed in 2005 and based on laboratory results, the current best estimate of SIM's performance would be 0.6 μas for narrow angle precision and 2.4 μas for global accuracy. This paper describes a variety of science programs that the SIM science team have proposed to conduct from a search for one Earth mass planets in the habitable zone of (≈130) nearby stars to the study of dark matter in the galactic disk, the galactic halo and the local group.

SIM will search for planets with masses as small as the Earth's orbiting in the ‘habitable zones’ around more than 100 of the nearest stars and could discover many dozen if Earth-like planets are common. With a planned “Deep Survey” of 100–450 stars (depending on desired mass sensitivity) SIM will search for terrestrial planets around all of the candidate target stars for future direct detection missions such as Terrestrial Planet Finder and Darwin. SIM's “Broad Survey” of 2100 stars will characterize single and multiple-planet systems around a wide variety of stellar types, including many now inaccessible with the radial velocity technique. In particular, SIM will search for planets around young stars providing insights into how planetary systems are born and evolve with time.

Over the past several years, our research group has been measuring proper motions for nearby dwarf satellite galaxies using data taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. In order to measure proper motions with an expected size of several tens of milliarcseconds per century using a time baseline of 2-4 years, our work required that positions of stars and QSOs be measured to an accuracy of ~0.25 mas (~0.005 pixel). This contribution reviews the scientific justification of this work and our methodology. It concludes with a few general results and future directions.

A Japanese plan of an infrared (z-band:0.9 μas or k-band:2.2 μas) space astrometry (JASMINE-project) is introduced. JASMINE (Japan Astrometry Satellite Mission for INfrared Exploration) will measure distances and tangential motions of stars in the bulge of the Milky Way. It will measure parallaxes, positions with an accuracy of 10 μas and proper motions with an accuracy of 10 μas/year for stars brighter than z=14 mag or k=11 mag. JASMINE will observe about ten million stars belonging to the bulge component of our Galaxy. With a completely new “map” of the Galactic bulge, it is expected that many new exciting scientific results will be obtained in various fields of astronomy. Presently, JASMINE is in a development phase, with a targeted launch date around 2016. Science targets, preliminary design of instruments, observing strategy, critical technical issues in JASMINE and also Nano-JASMINE project are described in this paper.

The problem of determination of the orbital velocity of an astrometric satellite from its own observational data is studied. It is well known that data processing of microarcsecond-level astrometric observations imposes very stringent requirements on the accuracy of the orbital velocity of satellite (a velocity correction of 1.45 mm/s implies an aberrational correction of 1 μas). Because of a number of degeneracies the orbital velocity cannot be fully restored from observations provided by the satellite. Seven constraints that must be applied on a velocity parameterization are discussed and formulated mathematically. It is shown what part of velocity can be recovered from astrometric data using a combined fit of both velocity parameters and astrometric parameters of the sources. Numerical simulations show that, with the seven constraints applied, the velocity and astrometric parameters can be reliably estimated from observational data. It is also argued that the idea to improve the velocity of an astrometric satellite from its own observational data is only useful if a priori information on orbital velocity justifies the applicability of the velocity constraints. The proposed model takes into account only translational motion of the satellite and ignores any satellite-specific parameters. Therefore, the results of this study are equally applicable to both scanning missions similar to Gaia, and pointing ones like SIM, provided that enough sources were observed sufficiently uniformly.

In this paper, we first summarize the results of a large-scale double-blind tests campaign carried out for the realistic estimation of the Gaia potential in detecting and measuring planetary systems. Then, we put the identified capabilities in context by highlighting the unique contribution that the Gaia exoplanet discoveries will be able to bring to the science of extrasolar planets during the next decade.

Gaia photometric capabilities should distinguish quasars to a high degree of certainty. With this, they should also be able to deliver a clean sample of quasars with a negligible trace of stellar contaminants. However, a purely photometric sample could miss a non negligible percentage of ICRF sources counterparts - and this interface is required to align with the ICRS and de-rotate the GCRF (Gaia Celestial Reference Frame), on grounds of continuity. To prepare a minimum clean sample forming the initial quasar catalogue for the Gaia mission, an all sky ensemble was formed containing 128,257 candidates. Among them there is at least one redshift determination for 98.75%, and at least one magnitude determination for 99.20% of the targets. The sources were collected from different optical and radio lists. We analyze the redshift, magnitude, and color distributions, their relationships, as well as their degree of completeness.

Complementary, the candidate sources enable to form an optical representation of the ICRS from first principles, namely, kinematically non-rotating with respect to the ensemble of distant extragalactic objects, aligned to the mean equator and dynamical equinox of J2000, and realized by a list of adopted coordinates of extragalactic sources.

Gaia, ESA's ambitious star-mapper mission due for launch late-2011, will provide multi-epoch micro-arcsecond astrometric and milli-magnitude photometric data for the brightest one billion objects in the sky, down to at least magnitude 20. Spectroscopic data will simultaneously be collected for the subset of the brightest 100 million stars, down to about magnitude 17. This massive data volume will allow astronomers to reconstruct the structure, evolution and formation history of the Milky Way. It will also revolutionize studies of the solar system and stellar physics and will contribute to diverse research areas, ranging from extra-solar planets to general relativity.

Underlying Gaia's scientific harvest will lie in a Catalogue, built on the fundamental space-based measurements. During the 5-year nominal operational lifetime, Gaia's payload, with its CCD mosaic containing 1 billion pixels, will autonomously detect all objects of interest and observe them throughout their passage of the focal plane. This paper discusses the workings of the Gaia instrument, details its payload, and discusses in depth how the scientific measurements will be collected. It addresses issues like maintenance of the scanning law, on-board data processing, the detection and confirmation of objects (single and multiple stars), the detection and rejection of cosmic rays and solar protons, the fundamental science measurements themselves composed of windows of CCD samples (pixels), and special strategies employed to maximize the science return for moving (i.e., solar-system) objects. The paper also explains how an on-board priority scheme will ensure catalogue completeness down to the faintest magnitudes possible, despite the limited ground-station availability and the enormous data volume that will be sent to the ground.

A beam of light from a background source to an observer is deflected by a gravitational body when travelling through the space in its vicinity. The deflection changes with configuration of the background source, the gravitational body and the observer, and the amount of deflection is dependent on the gravitational body's mass. It is anticipated that its mass could be determined if the shift can be measured by future precise astrometric projects such as Gaia or SIM-PlanetQuest.

The Gaia satellite, an ESA cornerstone mission to be launched at the end of the year 2011, will observe a large number of celestial bodies including also small bodies of the solar system. Albeit spread from the inner to the outer regions of the solar system, these are mainly near-Earth objects and main-belt asteroids. All objects brighter than magnitude V ≤ 20 that cross the field of view (i.e. with solar elongation 45° ≤ L ≤ 135°) of the survey-mode scanning telescope will be observed. The mission will provide, over its 5 years duration, high precision photometry and astrometry with an unprecedented accuracy ranging roughly from 0.3 to 3 milli-arcsecond on the CCD level, and depending on the target's magnitude. In addition, several hundreds of QSOs directly observed by Gaia will provide the kinematically non-rotating reference frame in the visible light, resulting in the construction of a ‘Gaia-ICRF’.

The positions of the asteroids hence enable to relate the dynamical reference frame—as defined by the equations of motion—to the kinematic one, and to further check the non-rotating consistency between both frames' definition. Here we show the results of a variance analysis obtained from a realistic simulation of observations for such a link. The simulation takes into account the time sequences and geometry of the observations that are particular to Gaia observations of solar system objects, as well as the instrument sensitivity and photon noise. Additionally, we show the achievable precision for the determination of a possible time variation of the gravitational constant Ġ/G. Taking into account the non-completeness of the actually known population of NEOs, we also give updated values for the nominal precision of the joint determination of the solar quadrupole J2 and PPN parameter β.

Gaia is an ESA space astrometry mission due for launch in 2011–12. We describe part of the work carried out in the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium, namely the Astrometric Global Iterative Solution (AGIS) currently being implemented at the European Space Astronomy Center (ESAC) in Spain and largely based on algorithms developed at Lund Observatory. Some provisional results based on simulated observations of one million stars are presented, demonstrating convergence at microarcsec level independent of initial conditions.

Nano-JASMINE is a nano-size astrometry satellite that will carry out astrometry measurements of nearby bright stars for more than one year. This will enable us to detect annual parallaxes of stars within 300 pc from the Sun. We expect the satellite to be launched as a piggy-back system as early as in 2009 into a Sun synchronized orbit at the altitude between 500 and 800 km. Being equipped with a beam combiner, the satellite has a capability to observe two different fields simultaneously and will be able to carry out HIPPARCOS-type observations along great circles. A 5 cm all aluminum made reflecting telescope with a aluminum beam combiner is developed. Using the on-board CCD controller, experiments with a real star have been executed. A communication band width is insufficient to transfer all imaging data, hence, we developed an onboard data processing system that extracts stellar image data from vast amount of imaging data. A newly developed 2K × 1K fully-depleted CCD will be used for the mission. It will work in the time delayed integration(TDI) mode. The bus system has been designed with special consideration of the following two points. Those are the thermal stabilization of the telescope and the accuracy of the altitude control. The former is essential to achieve high astrometric accuracies, on the order of 1 mas. Therefore relative angle of the beam combiner must be stable within 1 mas. A 3-axes control of the satellite will be realized by using fiber gyro and triaxial reaction wheel system and careful treatment of various disturbing forces.

An imperfect CTE in CCD detectors is one of the most important instrumental issues affecting both photometry and astrometry, especially in space-based observations. We discuss the CTE effect in the images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope's, Advanced Camera for Surveys in Wide Field Channel (ACS/WFC). ACS is the only imaging instrument capable of delivering sub-mas astrometry from a single observation, and it is important to take into account any instrumental systematic in positions such as the CTE effect.

We present the design of a Fizeau interferometer to be implemented for the GAME mission. The aim is to measure the PPN γ parameter with the same technique used for the first time by Dyson, Eddington et al., but at a 10−6 accuracy level. GAME will observe about 106 sufficiently bright stars at about 2° from the Sun. A dedicated space mission has the advantage of observing the light bending without waiting for an eclipse.

In this work we describe the JStuff, a preliminary generator of mock catalogues of extragalactic objects based on the Stuff code. This version is being implemented in the Java language for the ESA-Gaia satellite simulation framework. We also compare some results obtained with both versions of the simulator.

On a daily basis the Gaia telemetry data (some 30 GB) must be stored and treated in order to reconstruct the actual observations. This initial data treatment processes all newly arrived telemetry and various pieces of auxiliary data. The first part of the process is merely a reformatting to create raw objects for permanent storage in the raw data base (some 40 TB at the end of the mission). The next part is to analyze the data to derive initial values for the observables, e.g. transit times and fluxes, producing intermediate objects. Finally, the intermediate objects are matched with sources in the data base, linking all the observations of a given source.

To check the initial data treatment algorithm we use simulations of the telemetry stream provided by GASS, the Gaia System Simulator. GASS simulates astrometric, photometric and radial velocity data, using models of the satellite and on-board instruments, as well as the models of different of objects observed by Gaia (stars, galaxies, solar system objects, . . .). On the other hand, the initial data treatment allows us to validate the data generated by GASS, which are used too to check other algorithms like the First Look or the Astrometric Global Iterative Solution (AGIS).
