In previous work by Coates, Galkin and the authors, the notion of mutation between lattice polytopes was introduced. Such mutations give rise to a deformation between the corresponding toric varieties. In this paper we study one-step mutations that correspond to deformations between weighted projective planes, giving a complete characterization of such mutations in terms of T-singularities. We also show that the weights involved satisfy Diophantine equations, generalizing results of Hacking and Prokhorov.

Chladni figures are formed when particles scattered across a plate move due to an external harmonic force resonating with one of the natural frequencies of the plate. Chladni figures are precisely the nodal set of the vibrational mode corresponding to the frequency resonating with the external force. We propose a plausible model for the movement of the particles that explains the formation of Chladni figures in terms of the stochastic stability of the equilibrium solutions of stochastic differential equations.

In this paper we analyse the structure of a finite group of minimal order among the finite non-supersoluble groups possessing a triple factorization by supersoluble subgroups of pairwise relatively prime indices. As an application we obtain some sufficient conditions for a triple factorized group by supersoluble subgroups of pairwise relatively prime indices to be supersoluble. Many results appear as consequences of our analysis.

We give a complete classification of globally generated vector bundles of rank 3 on a smooth quadric threefold with c1 ≤ 2 and extend the result to arbitrary higher rank case. We also investigate the existence of globally generated indecomposable vector bundles, and give the sufficient and necessary conditions on numeric data of vector bundles for indecomposability.

We consider weighted sums over points of lattice polytopes, where the weight of a point v is the monomial qλ(v) for some linear form λ. We propose a q-analogue of the classical theory of Ehrhart series and Ehrhart polynomials, including Ehrhart reciprocity and involving evaluation at the q-integers. The main novelty is the proposal to consider q-Ehrhart polynomials. This general theory is then applied to the special case of order polytopes associated with partially ordered sets. Some more specific properties are described in the case of empty polytopes.

We rectify two omissions in the list of generators and include a brief discussion of the localization theorem of Kosniowski and Stong.

Let A and B be operators acting on infinite-dimensional complex Banach spaces. We say that the Weyl spectral identity holds for the tensor product A⊗B if σw(A⊗B) = σw(A)·σ(B)∪σ(A)·σw(B), where σ(·) and σw(·) stand for the spectrum and the Weyl spectrum, respectively. Conditions on A and B for which the Weyl spectral identity holds are investigated. Especially, it is shown that if A and B are biquasitriangular (in particular, if the spectra of A and B have empty interior), then the Weyl spectral identity holds. It is also proved that if A and B are biquasitriangular, then the tensor product A ⊗ B is biquasitriangular.

Let τ be the involution changing the sign of two coordinates in ℙ4. We prove that τ induces the identity action on the second Chow group of the intersection of a τ-invariant cubic with a τ-invariant quadric hypersurface in ℙ4. Let lτ and Πτ be the one- and two-dimensional components of the fixed locus of the involution τ. We describe the generalized Prymian associated with the projection of a τ-invariant cubic 𝓵 ⊂ P4 from lτ onto Πτ in terms of the Prymians 𝓅2 and 𝓅3 associated with the double covers of two irreducible components, of degree 2 and 3, respectively, of the reducible discriminant curve. This gives a precise description of the induced action of the involution τ on the continuous part of the Chow group CH2 (𝓵). The action on the subgroup corresponding to 𝓅3 is the identity, and the action on the subgroup corresponding to 𝓅2 is the multiplication by —1.

Let Φ be a reduced irreducible root system of rank greater than or equal to 2, let R be a commutative ring and let I, J be two ideals of R. In the present paper we describe generators of the commutator groups of relative elementary subgroups [E(Φ,R,I),E(Φ,R,J)] both as normal subgroups of the elementary Chevalley group E(Φ,R), and as groups. Namely, let xα(ξ), α ∈ Φ ξ ∈ R, be an elementary generator of E(Φ,R). As a normal subgroup of the absolute elementary group E(Φ,R), the relative elementary subgroup is generated by xα(ξ), α ∈ Φ, ξ ∈ I. Classical results due to Stein, Tits and Vaserstein assert that as a group E(Φ,R,I) is generated by zα(ξ,η), where α ∈ Φ, ξ ∈ I, η ∈ R. In the present paper, we prove the following birelative analogues of these results. As a normal subgroup of E(Φ,R) the relative commutator subgroup [E(Φ,R,I),E(Φ,R,J)] is generated by the following three types of generators: (i) [xα(ξ),zα(ζ,η)], (ii) [xα(ξ),x_α(ζ)] and (iii) xα(ξζ), where α ∈ Φ, ξ ∈ I, ζ ∈ J, η ∈ R. As a group, the generators are essentially the same, only that type (iii) should be enlarged to (iv) zα(ξζ,η). For classical groups, these results, with many more computational proofs, were established in previous papers by the authors. There is already an amazing application of these results in the recent work of Stepanov on relative commutator width.

If a locally compact group G acts on a C*-algebra B, we have both full and reduced crossed products and each has a coaction of G. We investigate ‘exotic’ coactions in between the two, which are determined by certain ideals E of the Fourier–Stieltjes algebra B(G); an approach that is inspired by recent work of Brown and Guentner on new C*-group algebra completions. We actually carry out the bulk of our investigation in the general context of coactions on a C*-algebra A. Buss and Echterhoff have shown that not every coaction comes from one of these ideals, but nevertheless the ideals do generate a wide array of exotic coactions. Coactions determined by these ideals E satisfy a certain ‘E-crossed product duality’, intermediate between full and reduced duality. We give partial results concerning exotic coactions with the ultimate goal being a classification of which coactions are determined by ideals of B(G).

We prove that, for an interval X ⊆ ℝ and a normed space Z, diagonals of separately absolutely continuous mappings f : X2 → Z are exactly mappings g : X → Z, which are the sums of absolutely convergent series of continuous functions.

Let S(V) be a complex linear sphere of a finite group G. Let S(V)*n denote the n-fold join of S(V) with itself and let aut G(S(V)*) denote the space of G-equivariant self-homotopy equivalences of S(V)*n. We show that for any k ≥ 1 there exists M > 0 that depends only on V such that |πk autG(S(V)*n)|≤ M for all n ≫0.

We develop a new non-vanishing theorem for del Pezzo surfaces with quotient singularities.

Regularity, complete intersection and Gorenstein properties of a local ring can be characterized by homological conditions on the canonical homomorphism into its residue field. In positive characteristic, the Frobenius endomorphism (and, more generally, any contracting endomorphism) can also be used for these characterizations. We introduce here a class of local homomorphisms, in some sense larger than all above, for which these characterizations still hold, providing an unified treatment for this class of homomorphisms.

In this paper we discuss various aspects of invariant measures for nonlinear Hamiltonian partial differential equations (PDEs). In particular, we show almost-sure global existence for some Hamiltonian PDEs with initial data of the form ‘a smooth deterministic function + a rough random perturbation’ as a corollary to the Cameron–Martin theorem and known almost-sure global existence results with respect to Gaussian measures on spaces of functions.

We prove two-term supercongruences for generalizations of recently discovered sporadic sequences of Cooper. We also discuss recent progress and future directions concerning other types of supercongruences.

We show that blow-up solutions of the critical generalized Korteweg–de Vries equation in H1() concentrate at least the mass of the ground state at the blow-up time. The I-method is used to prove a slightly weaker result in Hs() with 16/17 < s < 1. Under an assumption on the precise blow-up rate, we are able to use similar arguments to prove a more precise analogue of the H1() concentration result over the same range of s.

Let m, n be positive integers, let υ be a multilinear commutator word and let w = υm. We prove that if G is a locally graded group in which all w-values are n-Engel, then the verbal subgroup w(G) is locally nilpotent.
