Vaughan says that Dr. Mitchell did not know what he believed, that sometimes his preaching was so Arminian that his New School elders would remonstrate with him; that on such occasions Dr. Mitchell would express his surprise that he had been preaching anything but good Calvinism; would propose to make reparation on the first opportunity, and would on his next appointment retract everything Arminian and preach a very good Calvinistic discourse. The truth is that Dr. Mitchell was a man of feeling and impulse rather than intellect.
