Freezing and thawing is accelerated mechanical weathering. We have little firsthand experience with this technique, but it has been written about in English by several authors who have used water, or water with a dissolved sodium salt (Hanna and Church, 1928; Sohn, 1959, 1961; Sohn, Berdan, and Peck, 1965; and Surlyk, 1972).
