Cambridge University Press is sad to announce that Professor Bennett Zon will be stepping down as General Editor of Nineteenth-Century Music Review (NCMR) at the end of 2024, after over twenty years in the post. We’re grateful to Professor Zon for the huge contribution he has made to the journal and the support he has given its community of authors.

We are now inviting applications for the position of General Editor for an initial term of five years (2025–2029). Single editors, co-editors, or other editorial team structures are all welcome to apply. Final appointment decisions will be made by the Syndicate of Cambridge University Press.

The deadline for applications is 31 July 2024.

Nineteenth-Century Music Review locates music within all aspects of culture in the long nineteenth century (c.1789-1914), covering the widest possible range of methods, topics and concepts. Through themed and general issues, articles provide both depth and breadth in their contribution to this expanding field. A rich supply of book, CD, DVD, and score reviews reflects the journal's title and commitment to stimulate and advance critical discussion. The journal publishes innovative and original scholarship and has three issues a year. It published volume 20 in 2023 and has recently become an open access journal in which all research content is published Gold Open Access.

Editorial responsibilities will include:

• Shaping the strategic direction of the journal, in cooperation with Cambridge
• Organizing and managing the editorial office, with support from Cambridge
• Working alongside the Associate Editor and Editorial Assistant of NCMR
• Commissioning content for special issues
• Managing the peer review process (using the ScholarOne system), alongside the Editorial Assistant
• Making final article acceptance decisions
• Editing and proofing articles for the journal
• Proposing and working with members of an active Editorial Board
• Attending relevant conferences, where possible, and an annual online editorial meeting

In your application, please indicate your:

• Experience publishing in the field
• Editorial experience, ideally with an academic journal
• Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and work as part of a team
• Strong professional and academic links
• Organisational, communication and IT skills
• Institutional support, financial or otherwise, to aid your work on the journal
• Proposed plan for development, including areas such as:

1. Engagement with the changing landscape of academic publishing
2. Areas of focus for future special issues
3. Journal metrics
