Polarized Neutron Scattering Study Of Early Stage Phase Separation in a NI-13AT%AL Alloy

Abstract

The nucleation stages of the decomposition reaction in a 58Ni-13at%Al alloy at T=450° C have been investigated by means of small- and wide-angle polarized neutron scattering. The use of the 58Ni isotope for the sample preparation tremendously reduced the incoherent scattering of the matrix. This, together with the application of polarized neutrons for experiments at T = 12 K, made the detection of extremely small Ni3Al clusters, not accessible to other microanalytical tools, with diameters D < 1 nm feasible.
