Dimac: A New Delivery System for Silver Sulfadiazine

Abstract

Wound care for burn victims is painful and tedious, but necessary to avoid the ever-present problem of infection. In an effort to circumvent daily dressing changes while ensuring optimal wound protection, DIMAC, a new drug delivery system for the commonly used topical antimicrobial silver sulfadlazine, has been developed. When incorporated into the delivery system, silver sulfadiazine is released in a sustained fashion. The results of an evaluation of the safety and efficacy of DIMAC in the treatment of full-and partial-thickness burn wounds are described here. DIMAC, left In place for up to 4 days, appears to be as effective as twice-daily cleansing and application of silver sulfadiazine cream.
