Extract

This workshop produced a lively discussion covering a number of issues relating to the transport of radionuclides through compacted bentonite. The predominant themes were:

– the structural and chemical inhomogeneity of the compacted bentonite barrier

– the process of radionuclide sorption in bentonite

– the postulated process of surface diffusion

The main points of interest in this discussion are summarised here and some general conclusions are drawn.
