In this paper, we present Reo, which forms a paradigm for composition of software components based on the notion of mobile channels. Reo is a channel-based exogenous coordination model in which complex coordinators, called connectors, are compositionally built out of simpler ones. The simplest connectors in Reo are a set of channels with well-defined behaviour supplied by users. Reo can be used as a language for coordination of concurrent processes, or as a ‘glue language’ for compositional construction of connectors that orchestrate component instances in a component-based system. The emphasis in Reo is just on connectors and their composition, and not on the entities that connect to, communicate and cooperate through these connectors. Each connector in Reo imposes a specific coordination pattern on the entities (for example, components) that perform I/O operations through that connector, without the knowledge of those entities. Channel composition in Reo is a very powerful mechanism for construction of connectors. We demonstrate the expressive power of connector composition in Reo through a number of examples. We show that exogenous coordination patterns that can be expressed as (meta-level) regular expressions over I/O operations can be composed in Reo out of a small set of only five primitive channel types.

This paper exhibits accurate encodings of the λ-calculus in the π-calculus. The former is canonical for calculation with functions, while the latter is a recent step (Milner et al. 1989) towards a canonical treatment of concurrent processes. With quite simple encodings, two λ-calculus reduction strategies are simulated very closely; each reduction in λ-calculus is mimicked by a short sequence of reductions in π-calculus. Abramsky's precongruence of applicative bisimulation (Abramsky 1989) over λ-calculus is compared with that induced by the encoding of the lazy λ-calculus into π-calculus; a similar comparison is made for call-by-value λ-calculus.

We propose the design of a programming language for quantum computing. Traditionally, quantum algorithms are frequently expressed at the hardware level, for instance in terms of the quantum circuit model or quantum Turing machines. These approaches do not encourage structured programming or abstractions such as data types. In this paper, we describe the syntax and semantics of a simple quantum programming language with high-level features such as loops, recursive procedures, and structured data types. The language is functional in nature, statically typed, free of run-time errors, and has an interesting denotational semantics in terms of complete partial orders of superoperators.

The development of quantum walks in the context of quantum computation, as generalisations of random walk techniques, has led rapidly to several new quantum algorithms. These all follow a unitary quantum evolution, apart from the final measurement. Since logical qubits in a quantum computer must be protected from decoherence by error correction, there is no need to consider decoherence at the level of algorithms. Nonetheless, enlarging the range of quantum dynamics to include non-unitary evolution provides a wider range of possibilities for tuning the properties of quantum walks. For example, small amounts of decoherence in a quantum walk on the line can produce more uniform spreading (a top-hat distribution), without losing the quantum speed up. This paper reviews the work on decoherence, and more generally on non-unitary evolution, in quantum walks and suggests what future questions might prove interesting to pursue in this area.

This paper investigates the transformation of λν-terms into continuation-passing style (CPS). We show that by appropriate η-expansion of Fisher and Plotkin's two-pass equational specification of the CPS transform, we can obtain a static and context-free separation of the result terms into “essential” and “administrative” constructs. Interpreting the former as syntax builders and the latter as directly executable code, We obtain a simple and efficient one-pass transformation algorithm, easily extended to conditional expressions, recursive definitions, and similar constructs. This new transformation algorithm leads to a simpler proof of Plotkin's simulation and indifference results.

We go on to show how CPS-based control operators similar to, more general then, Scheme's call/cc can be naturally accommodated by the new transformation algorithm. To demonstrate the expressive power of these operators, we use them to present an equivalent but even more concise formulation of the efficient CPS transformation algorithm. Finally, we relate the fundamental ideas underlying this derivation to similar concepts from other work on program manipulation; we derive a one-pass CPS transformation of λn-terms; and we outline some promising areas for future research.

There are two ways to present this work; the most efficient is of course to start with the main syntactical definitions, and to end with semantics: this is the presentation that we follow in the body of the text: section 1, syntex; section 2, semantics. Another possibility is to follow the order of discovery of the concepts, which (as expected) starts with the semantics and ends with the syntex; we adopt this second way for our introduction, hoping that this orthogonal look at the same object will help to apprehend the concepts.

We reconsider the foundations of modal logic, following Martin-Löf's methodology of distinguishing judgments from propositions. We give constructive meaning explanations for necessity and possibility, which yields a simple and uniform system of natural deduction for intuitionistic modal logic that does not exhibit anomalies found in other proposals. We also give a new presentation of lax logic and find that the lax modality is already expressible using possibility and necessity. Through a computational interpretation of proofs in modal logic we further obtain a new formulation of Moggi's monadic metalanguage.

The π-calculus is a process algebra that supports mobility by focusing on the communication of channels. Milner's presentation of the π-calculus includes a type system assigning arities to channels and enforcing a corresponding discipline in their use. We extend Milner's language of types by distinguishing between the ability to read from a channel, the ability to write to a channel, and the ability both to read and to write. This refinement gives rise to a natural subtype relation similar to those studied in typed λ-calculi. The greater precision of our type discipline yields stronger versions of standard theorems on the π-calculus. These can be used, for example, to obtain the validity of β-reduction for the more efficient of Milner's encodings of the call-by-value λ-calculus, which fails in the ordinary π-calculus. We define the syntax, typing, subtyping, and operational semantics of our calculus, prove that the typing rules are sound, apply the system to Milner's λ-calculus encodings, and sketch extensions to higher-order process calculi and polymorphic typing.

Category theorists invented monads in the 1960's to express concisely certain aspects of universal algebra. Functional programmers invented list comprehensions in the 1970's to express concisely certain programs involving lists. This paper shows how list comprehensions may be generalised to an arbitrary monad, and how the resulting programming feature can express concisely in a pure functional language some programs that manipulate state, handle exceptions, parse text, or invoke continuations. A new solution to the old problem of destructive array update is also presented. No knowledge of category theory is assumed.

In this paper we introduce the notions of nested constraints and application conditions, short nested conditions. For a category associated with a graphical representation such as graphs, conditions are a graphical and intuitive, yet precise, formalism that is well suited to describing structural properties. We show that nested graph conditions are expressively equivalent to first-order graph formulas. A part of the proof includes transformations between two satisfiability notions of conditions, namely -satisfiability and -satisfiability. We consider a number of transformations on conditions that can be composed to construct constraint-guaranteeing and constraint-preserving application conditions, weakest preconditions and strongest postconditions. The restriction of rule applications by conditions can be used to correct transformation systems by pruning transitions leading to states violating given constraints. Weakest preconditions and strongest postconditions can be used to verify the correctness of transformation systems with respect to pre- and postconditions.

We introduce the notions of premonoidal category and premonoidal functor, and show how these can be used in the denotational semantics of programming languages. We characterize the semantic definitions of Eugenio Moggi's monads as notions of computation, exhibit a representation theorem for our premonoidal setting in terms of monads, and give a fibrational setting for the structure.

This paper tries to explain why and how category theory is useful in computing science, by giving guidelines for applying seven basic categorical concepts: category, functor, natural transformation, limit, adjoint, colimit and comma category. Some examples, intuition, and references are given for each concept, but completeness is not attempted. Some additional categorical concepts and some suggestions for further research are also mentioned. The paper concludes with some philosophical discussion.

The Asynchronous $\pi$-calculus, proposed in Honda and Tokoro (1991) and, independently, in Boudol (1992), is a subset of the $\pi$-calculus (Milner et al. 1992), which contains no explicit operators for choice and output prefixing. The communication mechanism of this calculus, however, is powerful enough to simulate output prefixing, as shown in Honda and Tokoro (1991) and Boudol (1992), and input-guarded choice, as shown in Nestmann and Pierce (2000). A natural question arises, then, as to whether or not it is as expressive as the full $\pi$-calculus. We show that this is not the case. More precisely, we show that there does not exist any uniform, fully distributed translation from the $\pi$-calculus into the asynchronous $\pi$-calculus, up to any ‘reasonable’ notion of equivalence. This result is based on the incapability of the asynchronous $\pi$-calculus to break certain symmetries that may be present in the initial communication graph. By similar arguments, we prove a separation result between the $\pi$-calculus and CCS, and between the $\pi$-calculus and the $\pi$-calculus with internal mobility, a subset of the $\pi$-calculus proposed by Sangiorgi where the output actions can only transmit private names.

Various notions of observing and testing processes are placed in a uniform algebraic framework in which observations are taken as constituting a quantale. General completeness criteria are stated, and proved in our applications.

Statistical entropy was introduced by Shannon as a basic concept in information theory measuring the average missing information in a random source. Extended into an entropy rate, it gives bounds in coding and compression theorems. In this paper, I describe how statistical entropy and entropy rate relate to other notions of entropy that are relevant to probability theory (entropy of a discrete probability distribution measuring its unevenness), computer sciences (algorithmic complexity), the ergodic theory of dynamical systems (Kolmogorov–Sinai or metric entropy) and statistical physics (Boltzmann entropy). Their mathematical foundations and correlates (the entropy concentration, Sanov, Shannon–McMillan–Breiman, Lempel–Ziv and Pesin theorems) clarify their interpretation and offer a rigorous basis for maximum entropy principles. Although often ignored, these mathematical perspectives give a central position to entropy and relative entropy in statistical laws describing generic collective behaviours, and provide insights into the notions of randomness, typicality and disorder. The relevance of entropy beyond the realm of physics, in particular for living systems and ecosystems, is yet to be demonstrated.

The most popular method for establishing bisimilarities among processes is to exhibit bisimulation relations. By definition, [Rscr ] is a bisimulation relation if [Rscr ] progresses to [Rscr ] itself, i.e., pairs of processes in [Rscr ] can match each other's actions and their derivatives are again in [Rscr ].

We study generalisations of the method aimed at reducing the size of the relations to be exhibited and hence relieving the proof work needed to establish bisimilarity results. We allow a relation [Rscr ] to progress to a different relation [Fscr ] ([Rscr ]), where [Fscr ] is a function on relations. Functions that can be safely used in this way (i.e., such that if [Rscr ] progresses to [Fscr ] ([Rscr ]), then [Rscr ] only includes pairs of bisimilar processes) are sound. We give a simple condition that ensures soundness. We show that the class of sound functions contains non-trivial functions and we study the closure properties of the class with respect to various important function constructors, like composition, union and iteration. These properties allow us to construct sophisticated sound functions – and hence sophisticated proof techniques for bisimilarity – from simpler ones.

The usefulness of our proof techniques is supported by various non-trivial examples drawn from the process algebras CCS and π-calculus. They include the proof of the unique solution of equations and the proof of a few properties of the replication operator. Among these, there is a novel result that justifies the adoption of a simple form of prefix-guarded replication as the only form of replication in the π-calculus.

The categorical dual construction of initial abstract data types is studied. The resulting terminal co-algebras represent not only an implementation independent semantics of infinite objects such as streams, but also a suitable formal basis for object types in the sense of the object-oriented programming paradigm. Instances of object types may be interpreted as abstract automata with several state transition functions representing the methods of an object, and several output functions representing the attributes. By structuring the index set of the possibly infinite family of methods, and by structuring the output set, one can specify specific object types. For dealing simultaneously with complex data types and object types, it is not necessary to live within a cartesian closed category. In ccc's there are standard functional constructions for object types, but object types are not necessarily a higher-order construction. A world of data types and object types may be combined with the Rewriting Logic of Meseguer to obtain a formal basis for concurrent object systems.

Studies of the mathematical properties of impredicative polymorphic types have for the most part focused on the polymorphic lambda calculus of Girard–Reynolds, which is a calculus of total polymorphic functions. This paper considers polymorphic types from a functional programming perspective, where the partialness arising from the presence of fixpoint recursion complicates the nature of potentially infinite (‘lazy’) data types. An approach to Reynolds' notion of relational parametricity is developed that works directly on the syntax of a programming language, using a novel closure operator to relate operational behaviour to parametricity properties of types. Working with an extension of Plotkin's PCF with ∀-types, lazy lists and existential types, we show by example how the resulting logical relation can be used to prove properties of polymorphic types up to operational equivalence.

High-level replacement systems are formulated in an axiomatic algebraic framework based on categories pushouts. This approach generalizes the well-known algebraic approach to graph grammars and several other types of replacement systems, especially the replacement of algebraic specifications which was recently introduced for a rule-based approach to modular system design.

in this paper basic notions like productions, derivations, parellel and sequential independence are introduced for high-level replacement syetms leading to Church-Rosser, Parallelism and concurrency Theorems previously shown in the literature for special cases only. In the general case of high-level replacement systems specific conditions, called HLR1- and HLR2-conditions, are formulated in order to obtain these results.

Several examples of high-level replacement systems are discussed and classified w.r.t. HLR1- and HLR2-conditions showing which of the results are valid in each case.
