* This seems to be a curious misprint. We find, in Vol. VII, No. 106, 1913, the reference: “Established in 1871…, it had the great advantage of securing for its president for the first seven years of its existence a mathematician of the eminence of Dr. T. A. Hirst…”. Compare the list of Presidents given later in this extract.

* The felicitous motto, “I hold every man a debtor to his profession…,” was placed by the Editor on the cover of No. 26.
