Propagation of an intense laser pulse in plasma with a periodically modulated density is considered using envelope equations. The laser induces modifications of the plasma refractive index via relativistic and ponderomotive nonlinearities. In the region of high plasma density, the self focusing effect of nonlinearity suppresses the diffraction divergence, and the laser converges. As the beam enters into the low density region, the diffraction tends to diverge it offsetting the convergence due to the curvature it has acquired. For a given set of plasma parameters, there is a critical power of the laser above which it propagates in a periodically focused manner. Below this power the laser undergoes overall divergence. At substantially higher powers, the laser beam continues to converge until the saturation effect of nonlinearity suppresses the self focusing and diffraction predominates. The effect of density ripple is to cause overall increase in the self focusing length. The minimum spot size decreases with the wave number of the ripple.

Controlled fusion energy from burning hydrogen with boron-11 is of interest because no neutrons are produced. Following the scheme of ignition by spherical irradiation by laser or particle beams, one has to deal with exorbitant conditions of densities and input energies. A new approach following the scheme of block ignition with laser pulses of picosecond (ps) duration and more than petawatt (PW) power led to the possibility of plane geometry irradiation of the fuel using the anomalous effect of block ignition for deuterium tritium (DT) based on updated conditions for the initial computations. We present the extension for H-11B resulting in a very less dramatic difference to DT than in the case of spherical pellet geometry. Ignition thresholds may be only about one order of magnitude higher and the needed temperatures of about 50 keV are no problem for the skin layer acceleration by nonlinear forces (SLANF) for the block generation.

Anomalous interaction of picosecond laser pulses of terawatt to petawatt power is due to suppression of relativistic self-focusing if prepulses are cut-off by a contrast ratio higher than 108, resulting in quasi-neutral directed plasma blocks with deuterium tritium ion current densities above 1011 A/cm2. This is still not high enough for ignition of solid-state density deuterium tritium because the energy flux density E* has to be higher than the threshold of 4 ×108 J/cm2 obtained within the theory of Chu (1972). A revision of this evaluation shows a reduction of this threshold by a factor 20 if the later discovered inhibition factors for thermal conduction because of double layer effects as well as the shorter stopping lengths of the alpha particles due to collective effects are taken into account. Under these relaxed conditions, the parameters of nonlinear force generated blocks of dielectrically increased thickness for deuterium tritium ignition with directed ions of energies near the 80 keV resonances are discussed.

In this work, we introduce a new ellipsoid model to describe bubble acceleration of electrons and discuss the required conditions of forming it. We have found that the electron trajectory is strongly related to background electron energy and cavity potential ratio. In the ellipsoid cavity regime, the quality of the electron beam is improved in contrast to other methods, such as that using periodic plasma wakefield, spherical cavity regime, and plasma channel guided acceleration. The trajectory of the electron motion can be described as hyperbola, parabola, or ellipsoid path. It is influenced by the position and energy of the electrons and the electrostatic potential of the cavity. In the experimental part of this work, a 20 TW power and 30 fs laser pulse was focused on a pulsed He gas jet. We have focused the laser pulse in the best matched point above the nozzle gas to obtain a stable ellipsoid bubble. The finding of the optimum points will be described in analytical details.

The anomaly at laser plasma interaction at laser pulses of TW to PW power and ps duration led to a very unique generation of quasi-neutral plasma blocks by a skin layer interaction avoiding the relativistic self-focusing. This is in contrast to numerous usual experiments. The plasma blocks have ion current densities above 1011 A/cm2 and may be used for a fast ignition scheme with comparably low compression of the deuterium tritium (DT) fuel. The difficulty is that a very high energy flux density E* of the ions is necessary according to the hydrodynamic theory (Bobin, 1971, 1974; Chu, 1972). This theory did not include the later discovered collective effect for the stopping power of the alpha particles. One problem is being discussed, whether the Bethe-Bloch binary collision theory or the collective collision theory of Gabor has to be applied. The inclusion of the collective effect results in a reduction of the threshold value of E* for ignition by a factor of about fife.

As the state of the art for high power laser systems increases from terawatt to petawatt level and beyond, a crucial parameter for routinely monitoring high intensity performance is laser spot size on a solid target during an intense interaction in the tight focus regime (<10 µm). Here we present a novel, simple technique for characterizing the spatial profile of such a laser focal spot by imaging the interaction region in third harmonic order (3ωlaser). Nearly linear intensity dependence of 3ωlaser generation for interactions >1019 Wcm−2 is demonstrated experimentally and shown to provide the basis for an effective focus diagnostic. Importantly, this technique is also shown to allow in-situ diagnosis of focal spot quality achieved after reflection from a double plasma mirror setup for very intense high contrast interactions (>1020 Wcm−2) an important application for the field of high laser contrast interaction science.

An analytical formalism of self focusing and self-phase modulation of an intense short pulse laser in a plasma due to relativistic and ponderomotive nonlinearities is developed. In the paraxial ray approximation, the pulse retains its Gaussian radial profile, however, its spot size varies with the distance of propagation in a periodic manner. It is influenced by self focusing. The frequency of the laser undergoes red shift. For a tanhyperbolic temporal profile of pulse, the red-shift is maximum at the foot of the pulse and decreases slowly as one goes to higher and higher intensity portions. The effect of ponderomotive nonlinearity is very significant in this respect. The maximum downshift occurs at a distance at which the laser acquires a minimum spot size. With retarded time normalized axial intensity increases more at z ~ Rd and the radial intensity is also more narrowly peaked at z ~ Rd, where Rd = 2π r02/λ is the Rayleigh length, r0 and λ are the spot size and wavelength of the laser pulse respectively.

Cylindrical cryogenic targets are required to carry out the Laboratory Planetary Science scheme of the experiments of the High Energy Density matter Generated by Heavy Ion Beams collaboration at FAIR. In this paper, for the first time a thorough analysis of the problem of such targets' fabrication, delivery and positioning in the center of the experimental chamber has been made. Particular attention is paid to the issue of a specialized cryogenic system creation intended for rep-rate supply of the High Energy Density matter Generated by Heavy Ion Beams experiments with the cylindrical cryogenic targets.

A feasibility of a new approach of laser fusion in plasma without implosion has been proposed and discussed using an intense laser. The cross-section of nuclear reaction is increased by the enhanced penetrability of nuclei through the Coulomb barrier. In this approach, an intense laser field of more than 10 EW was required to distort the Coulomb barrier to obtain enough penetrability. In the new improved model, a nuclear potential with meson attractive force is considered. Enhancement is observed for penetrability around EW or less power laser due to a nuclear potential. Energy gain even with Deuterium-Deuterium reaction can be obtained on this scheme in Deuterium plasma with energetic nucleon theoretically.

Ag thin films were deposited by pulsed laser ablation in a controlled Ar atmosphere. The deposition process was performed at different Ar pressure values in the range between 10 and 100 Pa to investigate the influence of ambient gas pressure on the plasma expansion dynamics and on the film structural properties. Position, velocity and volume of the laser generated plasma as functions of time were obtained by time resolved fast photography. The morphological properties of the films were investigated by transmission electron microscopy which shows that film growth proceeds via aggregation on the substrates of nanoclusters formed in the expanding plume. The formation of nanoparticles takes place as a consequence of plasma confinement induced by the interaction with ambient gas species. Data from fast photography analysis were used as input parameters to calculate the size of the nanoparticles using a model that takes into account the collisional nature of the laser generated silver plasma.

Surface plasmon enhanced electron acceleration is a recently discovered efficient particle acceleration phenomenon in the nanoscale-confined field of surface electromagnetic waves. For the generation and spatial/spectral control of keV-energy electrons generated, this way few-cycle laser pulses can be utilized particularly well. We present numerical results based on a simple model of this phenomenon analogous to the three-step model of high harmonic generation. We identify those parameter regimes where the emitted electron beam is highly directional and monoenergetic opening the door to novel ultrafast applications and methods.

In order to measure the phase conjugation-fidelity of stimulated Brillouin scattering with high pump energy more accurately and conveniently, a new measurement is proposed. According to the definition of the fidelity with optical field correlated integral, the method of recording the far-field by array camera is analyzed theoretically. By the method, an experiment for high energy stimulated Brillouin scattering is arranged, and the maximum energy of 3.42 J is achieved in a single-cell stimulated Brillouin scattering generator. For small pump pulse, the fidelity maintains a high value of more than 0.9. However, the reflectivity fluctuation is significant when the pump energy is larger than 1.5 J. As a result, the fidelity decreases gradually to 0.5 at the pump energy of 3.42 J. The reflectivity shows the same character of great fluctuation as the fidelity at high pump energy.

Unconventional, promising approaches to inertial fusion energy (IFE) proposed and studied in the framework of IFE keep-in-touch activity at Frascati EURATOM-ENEA Association will be reconsidered for the present more advanced technological context associated to a planned large installations scenario. Then the possibility to generate laser-produced fast heavy-ion sources (e.g., Bi ions, tens GeV) will be explored taking as reference results obtained in the FIGEX experiment scaled toward thermonuclear regimes. A possible dimensioning of such sources will be also given as well as the associated laser requirements.

With the advent of intense, coherent light sources in the XUV and soft X-ray regime, X-ray Thomson scattering becomes a unique tool for the diagnostics of dense plasmas. The scattering spectrum gives direct access to plasma properties like density, temperature, and composition. In dense systems, collisions among constituents are of primary importance for the prediction and interpretation of the scattering signal. We present a systematic approach to the dynamical structure factor using the Born-Mermin ansatz to include collisions via the dynamical collision frequency. Calculations of the scattering spectrum are performed for X-ray scattering on solid and compressed beryllium targets as well as for XUV-photons scattering on hydrogen at near solid density.

Kinetic collisionless expansion of a spherical cluster composed of light and heavy cold ions and hot electrons is studied for arbitrary electron temperature. A wide set of regimes of plasma expansion, from nearly quasi-neutral to Coulomb explosion, is described from a unified description. The time evolution of the velocity, density, and energy spectra for accelerated ions is studied. The study demonstrates that an optimum light ion concentration from few percent to few tens percent, depending on the electron temperature, leads to a quasi-monoenergetic spectra with numbers as high as 70–80% of the total number of light ions.

The formation of collisionless electrostatic shock (CES) and ion acceleration in thin foils irradiated by intense laser pulse is investigated using particle-in-cell simulation. The CES can appear in the expanding plasma behind the foil when self-induced transparency occurs. The transmitting laser pulse can expel target-interior electrons, in addition to the electrons from the front target surface. The additional hot electrons lead to an enhanced and spatially-extended sheath field behind the foil. As the CES propagates in the plasma, it also continuously forward-reflects many of the upstream ions to higher energies. The latter ions are further accelerated by the enhanced sheath field and can overtake and shield the target-normal sheath accelerated ions. The energy gain of the CES accelerated ions can thus be considerably higher than that of the latter.

The remaining challenges, confronting high-power microwave sources and pulsed power technology, stimulate the development of robust relativistic electron beam sources. This paper presents a carbon-fiber-aluminum cathode with high-density uniform emitters, which was tested in a single pulsed power generator (~450 kV, ~350 ns, ~50 Ω) and a repetitive one (350 kV, <10 ns, 150 Ω, and 100 Hz). The distribution and development of the cathode plasma was observed by time-and-space resolved diagnostics, and the uniformity of electron beam density was checked by taking x-ray images. A quasi-stationary behavior of the cathode plasma expansion was observed. It was found that the uniformity of the extracted electron beam is satisfactory in spite of individual plasma jets on the cathode surface. Under repetitively pulsed operation, this cathode exhibited a good shot-to-shot reproducibility even in poor vacuum. This new class of plasma cathodes offers a promising prospect of developing relativistic electron beam sources.

In the present article, a number of theoretical approximations and numerical methods, varying in complexity, are reviewed, in order to facilitate their selection for plasma diagnostic purposes. Results refer to highly charged ions, particularly in the lithium isoelectronic sequence. This article describes progress in understanding the role of laser induced degenerate state phenomenon on resonances obtained by using lasers. This type of process, implicitly included in the R-matrix Floquet calculation, contributes to some degree, to the overall behavior of the resonance profiles. The present article gives comparative results obtained from ab initio non-perturbative treatment and perturbative calculation of autoionization widths in Be-like ions. The effective oscillator strength for complex highly ionized atoms is, also, provided. Such calculations are of interest as they represent accurate benchmark data for beam emission spectroscopy, Zeff analysis, or complex atoms modeling in fusion plasma devices.

This paper addresses the effect of target plasma electrons on the charge state of energetic ions, penetrating a target composed of bound as well as plasma electrons. Dynamic screening of the projectile Coulomb potential by the plasma electrons brings about a depression in the ionization energy of the ionic projectiles, as has been verified experimentally. This in turn makes the ionization cross-sections larger, while making the recombination cross-section smaller, thereby causing an increase in the ion charge state compared to the case of a gas target. The effect of the plasma environment, where the valence electrons are treated as plasma, is illustrated here for a 2 MeV carbon beam penetrating amorphous carbon targets of varying densities.
