^{page 605 note 1} Armenians at various times had three katholikos sees: one in Sīs (Cilicia), a second in Āghtāmar (island in Lake Van, Turkish Armenia), and the third in Etchmiadzin (in the present republic of Armenia, U.S.S.R.). Of these, the first two had only limited local jurisdiction, but the last one had control of all Armenians. A katholikos is the head of the Armenian Church, a “pope” only for Armenians.
