This paper is a numerical simulation that was made in the three-dimensional flow, carried out in a modified centrifugal compressor, having vaned diffuser stage, used as an auto-motive turbo charger. Moreover, the performance of the centrifugal compressor was dependent on the proper matching between compressor impeller and vaned diffuser, influencing significantly surge and the efficiency of centrifugal compressor stages. In addition, a modified compressor impeller, coupled with vane and vaneless diffuser, has been found to have similar internal flow patterns for both the vaneless and vaned diffuser design. The vaned diffuser effect has been paid particular attention in terms of better analysis where the diffuser was designed for high sub-sonic inlet conditions. Another aim of this research was to study and simulate the effect of vaned diffuser on the performance of a centrifugal compressor. The simulation was undertaken by using a commercial software, the so-called ANSYS CFX, to predict numerically the performance in terms of pressure ratio, poly tropic efficiency and mass flow rate for the centrifugal compressor stage. The results were generated from CFD and were analyzed for better understanding of the fluid flow through centrifugal compressor stage. Conclusively, it was observed that the effect of the vaned diffuser is to convert the kinetic energy into a high static pressure after analyzing the results of the simulation.

This paper presents a dynamic formulation of the boundary element method for stress and failure criterion analyses of anisotropic thin plates. The elastostatic fundamental solutions are used in the formulations and inertia terms are treated as body forces. The radial integration method (RIM) is used to obtain a boundary element formulationithout any domain integral for general anisotropic plate problems. In the RIM, the augmented thin plate spline is used as the approximation function. A formulation for transient analysis is implemented. The time integration is carried out using the Houbolt method. Integral equations for the second derivatives of deflection are developed and all derivatives of fundamental solutions are computed analytically. Only the boundary is discretized in the formulation. Numerical results show good agreement with results available in literature as well as finite element results.

An exotensioned composite structure is developed as a light-weight and low-cost load carrying members for structural applications. The beam body, consisting of carbon-fiber composite skeletons with insertions of high-tension fiber strands, is externally weaved to provide extra structural integrity. Monotonic and cyclic flexural loading experiments are performed in this study to quantify the basic mechanical response of the structure. The bending strength, ductility, and fatigue resistance are specifically assessed.

In this paper, a numerical study is carried out to investigate the mixed convection flow and heat transfer in a parallel-plate channel with an anisotropic permeable porous medium. The principal axis of the porous medium is orientated in a direction which is oblique to the gravity vector. Both clear (Newtonian) fluid dissipation and Darcy viscous dissipation are considered in the heat transport equation. In this model, the temperature dependent fluid properties are considered and their influence on the flow and heat transfer characteristics is brought out. The governing non-linear equations (in non-dimensional form) are solved numerically by a second order finite difference scheme. The directional permeability ratio A1 is defined to combine the effects of the permeability ratio parameter K* = (K1 / K2) and the orientation angle Φ1. The effects of the anisotropic permeability ratio, the orientation angle of the principal axis, and the temperature dependent variable properties on the mixed convection flow and heat transfer are investigated. It is demonstrated that both the anisotropic permeability of the porous medium and the variable transport properties have strong effects on the flow and heat transfer characteristics.

The linear micromorphic electroelastic theory is proposed to solve bending problems of piezoelectric micro-beam in this paper. The basic governing equations with the boundary conditions are derived through the variational principle. Both the cantilever piezoelectric micro-beam subjected to a concentrated load at the free end and the simply supported micro-beam subjected to a distributed load are analyzed. It is found that the predictions from the micromorphic electroelastic theory are remarkably different from those from the classical theory when the micro-beam thickness is approximate or equal to the characteristic length scale parameter, but their difference is slight when the micro-beam thickness is much larger than the characteristic length scale parameter. As a result, it is concluded that the size effect is significant when the micro-beam thickness is comparable to the characteristic length scale parameter.

This study applies the numerical inversion of Laplace transform methods to study the piezoelectric dynamic fracture problem, recalculating Chen and Karihaloo's [1] analysis on the transient response of a impermeable crack subjected to anti-plane mechanical and in-plane electric impacts. Three numerical methods were adopted for calculating the dynamic stress intensity factor: Durbin method, Zhao method 1, and Zhao method 2. The results obtained were more accurate than the results in Chen and Karihaloo's [1] study. Through the calculation, this study presents a better range of parameters for the above three methods, and compares the advantages and disadvantages of each method in detail.

Residual stress in MEMS is of inherent importance in various respects. This study proposes a specific method using ANSYS including the birth and death method and combined with the optimal method (SCGM) to reduce the residual stresses during the CMOS fabrication process. The suitable cooling temperature for decreasing the residual stress is proposed and available. It demonstrates that the suitable parameter on the fabrication can reduce the residual stress in MEMS devices without any extra manufacturing process or external apparatus. The proposed method can expand to simulate the realistic MEMS model effectively.

In this work a numerical investigation has been conducted to study the unsteady oscillatory flow of a viscous fluid induced by a swirling disk. The disk stretches radially with the time-based sinusoidal oscillations. The governing equations for the three-dimensional boundary layer-flow are normalized using a suitable set of similarity transformations. The normalized partial differential equations are then solved numerically using a finite difference scheme by altering the semi-infinite domain to a finite domain. The effects of various imperative parameters on the oscillatory flow are discussed with graphs and tables.

An exact analysis of deformation and stress field in a laminated elastic tube under extension and uniform pressuring is presented. The problem of finite laminated tube is considered with emphasis on the end effect. The problem is formulated on the basis of the state space formalism for axisymmetric deformation of transversely isotropic layer. The transfer matrix transmits the state vector in radial direction from inner surface to outer surface and takes into account the interfacial continuity and lateral boundary conditions in a rigorous manner. Upon delineating the symplectic orthogonality relations of the eigenvectors and by using eigenfunction expansion, an exact solution which satisfies the end conditions is determined. The results show that the end effect is significant but confined to a local region near the base where the displacement and stress distributions are remarkably different from those according to the simplified solutions that only satisfy lateral BC.

The focal point of this paper is to uncover, by analyzing the higher order wave effect, an improved mechanism for space-constrained rectangular plenums using a simplified objective function in conjunction with a genetic (GA). Three kinds of rectangular mufflers hybridized with extended tubes will be assessed: Plenum A: A two-chamber plenum equipped with an extended tube; plenum B: A three-chamber plenum with two extended tubes; and plenum C: A two-chamber plenum equipped with three extended tubes. In order to shorten the numerical assessment, a simplified objective function (OBJ) is established using a boundary element model (BEM) in conjunction with the neural network model (NNM). To expediently approach an optimal plenum, the best OBJ will be numerically searched using a genetic algorithm (GA). However, before the GA operation is performed, the accuracy of the BEM is verified using analytical data. And, because the simplified objective function (OBJ) is seen to be in agreement with the BEM, the numerical cases of sound elimination relative to the various parameter sets and pure tones (300, 750, and 1300Hz) can be carried out.

Results reveal that the maximum value of the sound transmission loss (STL) can be accurately obtained at the desired frequencies. Additionally, the acoustical performance of the lower frequencies will be improved if the number of chambers and rectangular tubes are increased. However, the acoustical performance of the higher frequencies will decrease when the number of chambers and rectangular tubes are decreased. Consequently, the algorithms proposed in this study will efficiently develop optimal rectangular plenums with multiple rectangular extended tubes.

In this paper, a resonator is modeled as a microbeam under the effect of thermoelastic damping and actuated electrically. Two models, small and large deformation models, are represented by considering linear and nonlinear Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. These models are compared against voltage, and the difference between these models is shown and discussed. In the large deformation model, the microbeam deflected due to applied DC voltage, and vibration of microbeam occurs around this static deflection. The vibration equation is linearized around static deflection and by applying harmonic vibration, equation for mode shape and frequency is obtained. The complex frequency is calculated by numerical method and then used for obtaining the Q-factor of thermoelastic damping. The stretching effect and thermoelastic damping is validated with the literature. The result shows that for the high values of voltage, the large deformation model is more accurate. The behavior of thermoelastic damping is also investigated against the geometrical and material properties.

The responses to an incident plane SH wave on or near a surface irregularity which is embedded in an elastic half-plane are investigated. The surface irregularity represents a canyon, an alluvial valley or a hill. The wave function expansion method has been employed to solve surface irregularities, such as a semi-cylindrical canyon, a semi-cylindrical alluvial valley, or a semi-elliptical canyon and a semi-elliptical alluvial valley. These solutions to the scattering problem of SH wave can be used to test the accuracy of the other numerical methods. But solutions for surface irregularities with arbitrarily shapes cannot be found easily. A hybrid method combines the finite element method with series expansion is applied to solve scattering problems in this study. A subregion encloses the surface irregularity with a semi-circular auxiliary boundary can be meshed by the finite element method. By using the transfinite interpolation (TFI) produces excellent grid mesh on the subregion. The advantage of TFI is the flexibility to facilitate modeling of the subregion. On the other hand, the boundary data can be formulated by using a series representation with unknown coefficients. The Lamb's solution which satisfies the traction free condition and the radiation condition at infinity is implemented to be the basis function. The unknown coefficients can be obtained by satisfying the continuity conditions of the semi-circular auxiliary boundary between the subregion and the half-plane. The hybrid method that combines TFI with series expansion is successfully herein to solve the scattering problem by a surface irregularity. Numerical results in this study for special cases agree well with those in the published literatures. In this study, the steps and skills of hybrid method are described systematically and completely to solve the surface irregularity.

In this study the Maximum Likelihood Estimator is utilized to identify the characteristics of failure of class-H insulation by considering accelerated life test data under censored situations from Nelson. The hazard rate function is considered in terms of the reliability, h(R), so-called AE model. The AE model is used to model the failures which are expressed as the serial connection between three modes, namely the turn, phase, and ground. This is the so-called competing failure. The main concern in the present investigation relates to the characteristic of changes in cumulative damage with temperature. The characteristic of the damage process basically change, with less capability of cumulation. The failure tends to be unpredictable in a constant hazard rate situation in much higher temperature environments. The parameters of the model are related to the temperature and follow the Arrhenius law. The numerical results indicate that the AE model is well fitted to the data and gives more information to identify the failure modes with fewer parameters. This is better than the using Weibull distribution with both parameters varied with temperature. According to the predicted lifetime, the turn needs to be rearranged primarily, followed by the phase. The ground mode only has influence on the failure at much higher temperatures.

The attractive feature of the singularity method for steady Stokes flows is that the hydrodynamic forces acting on the particle can be calculated by the total strength of distributed singularities. For unsteady Stokes flows, however we have to derive hydrodynamic forces acting on a solid body in terms of the strengths of both unsteady Stokeslets as well as unsteady potential dipoles if mass and force sources are both taken into consideration. Since the hydrodynamic force formulation results in a Volterra integral equation of the first kind, and the strengths are numerically approximated by means of the Lubich convolution quadrature method (CQM) in this study. As far as the numerical solutions of time-domain integral formulations of the unsteady Stokes equations are concerned, this paper requires only the Laplace-domain instead of the time- domain fundamental solutions of the governing equations. The stability and accuracy of the proposed method are verified through some well selected numerical examples. In total we include two examples presenting the accuracy of Lubich CQM, and another two examples for calculating general hydrody-namic forces of a sphere in oscillating or non-oscillating unsteady Stokes flows. It is concluded that this study is able to extend the unsteady Stokes flow theory to more general transient motions instead to limit to the oscillating flow assumption.

The phenomena of surface instabilities in a thin power-law fluid during spin coating are investigated. The set of Navier-Stokes equations with non-Newtonian behavior in the region of low Reynolds number serves as a mathematical description of the physical systems. Long-wave perturbation analysis is proposed to derive an evolution equation of the Ostwald de-Waele type fluid to govern the propagation of surface waves. Weakly nonlinear dynamics of film flow is studied by the multiple scales method. The amplitude of instability is determined by a Ginzburg-Landau equation. The study reveals that the degree of power-law index plays a vital role in stabilizing the film flow. The shear-thinning fluid is more unstable than the shear-thickening fluid in the stability analysis. Further, the nonlinear wave speed in the supercritical stability region decreases with increasing values of power-law index.

This paper shows that the mobilized shear strength of a two-dimensional (2-D) spatially variable saturated undrained clay is closely related to the extreme value of a one-dimensional (1-D) continuous stationary stochastic process. This 1-D stochastic process is the integration of the 2-D spatially variable shear strength along potential slip curves. Based on this finding, a probability distribution model for the mobilized shear strength of the 2-D clay is developed based on a probability distribution model for the extreme value of the 1-D stochastic process. The latter (the model for the 1-D extreme value) has analytical expressions. With the proposed probability distribution model, the mobilized shear strength of a 2-D clay can be simulated without the costly random field finite element analyses.

Upsetting is a typical test for determining the workability diagram. In most cases axisymmetric samples are used for such tests. However, the shape of samples may have a significant effect on the ductile fracture initiation. Therefore, a greater variety of sample geometry should lead to a more accurate shape of the workability diagram. A difficulty here is that a theoretical treatment of samples in which three-dimensional flow occurs is more difficult and time consuming as compared to axisymmetric samples under axisymmetric loading. This difficulty can be overcome in the case of the ductile fracture criterion based on the workability diagram and the average value of the triaxiality factor. In particular, if fracture occurs at free surfaces then it is sufficient to determine experimentally in-surface strains after several stages of the upsetting process, up to the initiation of ductile fracture. After that, the corresponding point of the workability diagram can be found by means of a simple analytical procedure and numerical integration. This approach is used in the present paper to correct the workability diagram using non-axisymmetric upsetting of five different samples made of steel. Some previous results are combined with the new results to obtain the workability diagram over a wide range of the triaxiality factor.

The stability of the lattice Boltzmann model (LBM) is a challenging problem in the simulation of compressible flows with different types of embedded discontinuities. This study, proposes a complementary scheme for simulation of inviscid compressible flows by the lattice Boltzmann models using the numerical filters to improve the stability. The advantages and disadvantages of the implementation of numerical filters on the primitive and conservative variables, in addition to, mesoscopic and macroscopic variables are investigated. Moreover, a shock-detecting sensor, which activates a second-order linear filter near the discontinuities and a higher-order linear filter in smooth regions, is described and assessed. This study demonstrates that the proposed complementary scheme is practical. Also the accuracy and robustness of the utilized LB models are improved for inviscid compressible flows by implementation of the numerical filters on primitive variables. The validity of the procedure to capture shocks and to resolve contact discontinuity and rarefaction waves in well-known benchmarks is investigated and good agreements are obtained for all test cases.

The Lie symmetry and Hojman conserved quantity of Lagrange equations for a weakly nonholonomic system and its first-degree approximate holonomic system are studied. The differential equations of motion for the system are established. Under the special infinitesimal transformations of group in which the time is invariable, the definition of the Lie symmetry for the weakly nonholonomic system and its first-degree approximate holonomic system are given, and the exact and approximate Hojman conserved quantities deduced directly from the Lie symmetry are obtained. Finally, an example is given to study the exact and approximate Hojman conserved quantity for the system.
