Enter the computing arboretum and you will find a variety of well-studied trees: AVL trees (Adel'son-Vel'skiĭ & Landis 1962), symmetric binary B-trees (Bayer 1972), Hopcroft's 2-3 trees (Aho et al. 1974), the bushy finger trees (Guibas et al. 1977) and the colourful red-black trees (Guibas & Sedgewick 1978). In this pearl, we look at a more exotic species of balanced search trees, 1-2 brother trees (Ottmann et al. 1979), which deserves to be better known. Brother trees lend themselves well to a functional implementation with deletion (Section 5) as straightforward as insertion (Section 3), both running in logarithmic time. Furthermore, brother trees can be constructed from ordered lists in linear time (Section 4). With some simple optimisations in place, this implementation of search trees is one of the fastest around. So, fasten your seat belts.

We present two implementations of Oppen's pretty-printing algorithm in Haskell that meet the efficiency of Oppen's imperative solution but have a simpler and a clear structure. We start with an implementation that uses lazy evaluation to simulate two co-operating processes. Then we present an implementation that uses higher-order functions for delimited continuations to simulate co-routines with explicit scheduling.

This issue of the Journal of Functional Programming (JFP) marks a point of transition. After serving since 1991 as Editor, then since 2004 as co-Editor in Chief (along with Greg Morrisett from 2004 to 2006 and Xavier Leroy since 2007), Paul Hudak is stepping down.

Programming languages should be designed not by piling feature on top of feature, but by removing the weaknesses and restrictions that make additional features appear necessary. Scheme demonstrates that a very small number of rules for forming expressions, with no restrictions on how they are composed, suffice to form a practical and efficient programming language that is flexible enough to support most of the major programming paradigms in use today.

Scheme was one of the first programming languages to incorporate first-class procedures as in the lambda calculus, thereby proving the usefulness of static scope rules and block structure in a dynamically typed language. Scheme was the first major dialect of Lisp to distinguish procedures from lambda expressions and symbols, to use a single lexical environment for all variables, and to evaluate the operator position of a procedure call in the same way as an operand position. By relying entirely on procedure calls to express iteration, Scheme emphasized the fact that tail-recursive procedure calls are essentially gotos that pass arguments. Scheme was the first widely used programming language to embrace first-class escape procedures, from which all previously known sequential control structures can be synthesized. A subsequent version of Scheme introduced the concept of exact and inexact number objects, an extension of Common Lisp's generic arithmetic. More recently, Scheme became the first programming language to support hygienic macros, which permit the syntax of a block-structured language to be extended in a consistent and reliable manner.

This special issue of the Journal of Functional Programming collects revised selected articles arising from the inaugural meeting of the Workshop on Mathematically Structured Functional Programming, MSFP 2006, held in Kuressaare, Estonia, on 2 July 2006, with support from the European Union's FP6 IST Coordination Action TYPES. This workshop raised the curtain for the Eighth International Conference on Mathematics of Program Construction, MPC 2006, but where MPC is concerned primarily with extrinsic mathematics supporting the programming process, MSFP has a complementary focus on the mathematics intrinsic to programs themselves. MSFP is about the extraction of functionality from structure.

Eighteen years ago Richard Bird joined the editorial team of the Journal of Functional Programming. As Richard mentions in his recollections (Bird, 2006), the founding editors of the Journal, Simon Peyton Jones and Philip Wadler, had asked him to contribute a regular column to be called Functional Pearls, roughly modeled on the Programming Pearls that Jon Bentley had run for the Communications of the ACM in the 1980s. Richard agreed to the suggestion, but only under the proviso that he would seek other contributors to the column.

Macros still haven't made their way into typed higher-order programming languages such as Haskell and Standard ML. Therefore, to extend the expressiveness of Haskell or Standard ML, one must express new linguistic features in terms of functions that fit within the static type systems of these languages. This is particularly challenging when introducing features that span across multiple types and that bind variables. We address this challenge by developing, in a step by step manner, mechanisms for encoding patterns and pattern matching in Haskell in a type-safe way.

Motivated by the search for a body of mathematical theory to support the semantics of computational effects, we first recall the relationship between Lawvere theories and monads on Set. We generalise that relationship from Set to an arbitrary locally presentable category such as Poset and ωCpo or functor categories such as [Inj, Set] and [Inj, ωCpo]. That involves allowing the arities of Lawvere theories to be extended to being size-restricted objects of the locally presentable category. We develop a body of theory at this level of generality, in particular explaining how the relationship between generalised Lawvere theories and monads extends Gabriel–Ulmer duality.

Sadly, Richard Bird is stepping down as the editor of the ‘Functional Pearls’ column. As a farewell present, I would like to dedicate a tree to him. A woody plant is appropriate for at least two reasons: Richard has been preoccupied with trees in many of his pearls, and where else would you find a bird's nest? Actually, there is a lot of room for nests, as the tree is infinite. Figure 1 displays the first five levels. The Bird tree, whose nodes are labelled with rational numbers, enjoys several remarkable properties.

We combine ideas from types for continuations, effect systems and monads in a very simple setting by defining a version of classical propositional logic in which double-negation elimination is combined with a modality. The modality corresponds to control effects, and it includes a form of effect masking. Erasing the modality from formulas gives classical logic. On the other hand, the logic is conservative over intuitionistic logic.

Experimental game theory is increasingly important for research in many fields. Unfortunately, it is poorly supported by computer tools. We have created Hagl, a domain-specific language embedded in Haskell, to reduce the development time of game-theoretic experiments and make the definition and exploration of games and strategies simple and fun.

We have built the first family of tagless interpretations for a higher-order typed object language in a typed metalanguage (Haskell or ML) that require no dependent types, generalized algebraic data types, or postprocessing to eliminate tags. The statically type-preserving interpretations include an evaluator, a compiler (or staged evaluator), a partial evaluator, and call-by-name and call-by-value continuation-passing style (CPS) transformers. Our principal technique is to encode de Bruijn or higher-order abstract syntax using combinator functions rather than data constructors. In other words, we represent object terms not in an initial algebra but using the coalgebraic structure of the λ-calculus. Our representation also simulates inductive maps from types to types, which are required for typed partial evaluation and CPS transformations. Our encoding of an object term abstracts uniformly over the family of ways to interpret it, yet statically assures that the interpreters never get stuck. This family of interpreters thus demonstrates again that it is useful to abstract over higher-kinded types.

The Functional Payout Framework (fpf) is a Haskell application that uses an embedded domain-specific functional language to represent and process exotic financial derivatives. Whereas scripting languages for pricing exotic derivatives are common in banking, fpf uses multiple interpretations to not only price such trades, but also to analyse the scripts to provide lifecycle support and more. This paper discusses fpf in relation to the wider trading workflow and our experiences in using a functional language in such a system as both an implementation language and a domain-specific language.

In the simply typed λ-calculus, a hereditary substitution replaces a free variable in a normal form r by another normal form s of type a, removing freshly created redexes on the fly. It can be defined by lexicographic induction on a and r, thus giving rise to a structurally recursive normalizer for the simply typed λ-calculus. We implement hereditary substitutions in a functional programming language with sized heterogeneous inductive types , arriving at an interpreter whose termination can be tracked by the type system of its host programming language.

A constraint programming system combines two essential components: a constraint solver and a search engine. The constraint solver reasons about satisfiability of conjunctions of constraints, and the search engine controls the search for solutions by iteratively exploring a disjunctive search tree defined by the constraint program. In this paper we give a monadic definition of constraint programming in which the solver is defined as a monad threaded through the monadic search tree. We are then able to define search and search strategies as first-class objects that can themselves be built or extended by composable search transformers. Search transformers give a powerful and unifying approach to viewing search in constraint programming, and the resulting constraint programming system is first class and extremely flexible.

One approach to give semantics to languages with subtypes is by translation to target languages without subtyping: subtypings A ≤ B are interpreted via conversion functions A → B. This paper shows how to extend the method to languages with computational effects, using Moggi's computational metalanguage.

Traditionally, decidability of conversion for typed λ-calculi is established by showing that small-step reduction is confluent and strongly normalising. Here we investigate an alternative approach employing a recursively defined normalisation function which we show to be terminating and which reflects and preserves conversion. We apply our approach to the simply typed λ-calculus with explicit substitutions and βη-equality, a system which is not strongly normalising. We also show how the construction can be extended to system T with the usual β-rules for the recursion combinator. Our approach is practical, since it does verify an actual implementation of normalisation which, unlike normalisation by evaluation, is first order. An important feature of our approach is that we are using logical relations to establish equational soundness (identity of normal forms reflects the equational theory), instead of the usual syntactic reasoning using the Church–Rosser property of a term rewriting system.

Relational program derivation is the technique of stepwise refining a relational specification to a program by algebraic rules. The program thus obtained is correct by construction. Meanwhile, dependent type theory is rich enough to express various correctness properties to be verified by the type checker. We have developed a library, AoPA (Algebra of Programming in Agda), to encode relational derivations in the dependently typed programming language Agda. A program is coupled with an algebraic derivation whose correctness is guaranteed by the type system. Two non-trivial examples are presented: an optimisation problem and a derivation of quicksort in which well-founded recursion is used to model terminating hylomorphisms in a language with inductive types.
