We are delighted to express our debt of gratitude to Uta Balbier, Hans Krabbendam, Kendric Oliver, and Axel Schaefer as the guest editors for this special issue of JAS in which invited contributors explore Toward a Global History of American Evangelicalism across a multitude of cross-, multi- and interdisciplinary perspectives.

On the review side, the print section leads with a review essay by Ben Offiler, which focusses on three books that consider the foundations, evolution, and missed opportunities of Washington's relationship with Tehran, a timely intervention given the recent presidential elections in the United States (November 2016) and Iran (May 2017). The online section opens with David Anderson's review essay on three books that explore how and in what ways the Civil War was felt, narrated, and remembered. The essay is followed by two reviews of books that continue the Civil War theme by reflecting on the legacy of the conflict within and beyond the United States.
