Xylotrechus quadripes (Chevrolat), the coffee white stemborer (CWSB), is a major pest of arabica coffee (Coffea arabica L.) in some Asian countries. The CWSB was first reported in India in 1838. CWSB larvae make galleries in the main stem and thick primary branches of coffee plants. The pest causes substantial economic loss every year because infested plants have to be uprooted. The borer completes its life cycle in 1 year. There are two to three population peaks in 1 year and emergence periods depend on climatic conditions. Several natural enemies (parasitoids, predators and pathogens) and some alternative host plants of this borer have been recorded. Integrated management, i.e. cultural, mechanical, sex pheromone and chemical methods, has been adopted to control the stemborer. This review summarizes the most important work carried out on the bioecology and integrated management of X. quadripes. Also, we briefly discuss the need for future studies for better management of the CWSB.

Insect-enhanced diets of Periplaneta americana (L.), in separate combinations with Zea mays L. and starter mash/finisher, were fed to 4-week-old birds, Gallus gallus domesticus L., over a period of 13 weeks to identify alternative and relatively cheaper sources of protein for poultry birds. Within the first 3 weeks of feeding, the body weight of the birds was not significantly (P>0.05) different from each other, whereas a significant (P = 0.009) trend arose at week 8. This preliminary study shows that insect-enhanced meals could be used as an alternative feed within the formative stage of development of G. domesticus.

Forest loss has caused fragmentation and destruction of habitats, and thereby presents serious extinction risk to many endemic species in Madagascar. Among many other arthropod groups, carabid beetles are poorly known in Madagascar as regards their distribution, habitat requirements and taxonomy. The aim of this study is to document community composition, distribution patterns and habitat preferences of carabids in the forest-dominated Ranomafana National Park, south-eastern Madagascar. Carabids were collected by hand and trunk traps from secondary forest, primary forest and nearby village areas. In total, 4314 individuals representing 125 species, including 38 new species, were collected. Almost 70% of the species were recorded in very low abundances. Furthermore, there were only a few species in intermediate abundance classes, while the three most abundant species represented ~36% of the total catch. The carabid community seems to be very species rich, consisting mostly of species in low abundances. A positive correlation was found between abundance and occupancy despite high variation among species distribution patterns. Small population sizes of endemic species with nearby habitat destruction make the species especially vulnerable to extinction and increase the importance of protecting Ranomafana National Park.

The variation in demographic parameters (namely survival and fecundity, intrinsic rate of natural increase pre-reproductive period and relative growth rate) was used to assess the resistance of cowpea landraces (namely B261-B, B383, B013-F, B339 and Blackeye, as a check) against cowpea aphid (Aphis craccivora Koch). The experiment was carried out from 18 March 2011 to 5 April 2011. The demographic parameters of A. craccivora differed significantly among varieties, supporting our prediction that cowpea landraces resistant to cowpea aphid would have a significant effect on the demographic parameters of the aphid. We recorded significantly lower survival, fecundity, intrinsic natural rate of increase and relative growth rate on the landraces B261-B and B383 compared with the other landraces. A significant delay in the pre-reproductive period was also found on B261-B and B383. The results showed that landraces B261-B and B383 have an increased level of resistance as shown by the extended pre-reproductive period and the reduction in population growth rate, survival and fecundity. This information will be used in the characterization of the landraces before being incorporated in the breeding programme in Botswana.

To evaluate the impact of the honeybee Apis mellifera adansonii Latreille on fruit and seed yields of Callistemon rigidus R. Br. 1819, its foraging and pollinating activities were studied in Ngaoundéré for two seasons (June–August 2009 and July–September 2010). Each year, observations were made on 120 inflorescences per treatment. The treatments included unlimited flower access by all visitors, bagged flowers to deny all visits and limited visits by A. m. adansonii only. In addition, all flower visitors were recorded. The worker bee's seasonal rhythm of activity, its foraging behaviour on flowers, its pollination efficiency, the fruiting rate, the number of seeds per fruit and the percentage of normal seeds were recorded. Individuals from five and ten insect species that visited C. rigidus flowers were recorded in 2009 and 2010, respectively. Apis mellifera adansonii was the most frequent, followed by Myrmicaria opaciventris Emery. Apis mellifera adansonii intensely and preferably foraged for nectar. The fruiting rate, the number of seeds per fruit and the percentage of normal seeds of unprotected inflorescences were significantly higher than those of inflorescences protected from insects. Apis mellifera adansonii foraging resulted in a significant increase in the fruiting rate by 92.04% in 2009 and 64% in 2010, as well as the number of seeds per fruit by 38.67% in 2009 and 59.16% in 2010, and the percentage of normal seeds by 84.67% in 2009 and 82.30% in 2010. Cultivation of C. rigidus plants could be recommended to increase seeds, fruits and honey production.

Rice germplasm comprising 66 lines/varieties was evaluated under field conditions for two wet seasons against a yellow stemborer, leaffolder and whitebacked planthopper (WBPH) at the vegetative and panicle initiation crop stages. Glasshouse screening of germplasm for WBPH resistance was done at the seedling stage. At the vegetative stage, over the 2 years, 18 lines/varieties showed leaffolder damage from 6.21 ± 0.33 to 9.99 ± 4.07%, while at the panicle initiation stage, six lines/varieties showed damage from 8.77 ± 1.25 to 12.25 ± 4.67%. A highly significant correlation between flag leaf width and per cent infested leaves at the vegetative (r = 0.88) and panicle initiation (r = 0.79) stages was recorded. No significant correlation was observed between plant height and leaffolder infestation at the vegetative stage; however, it was significant at the panicle initiation stage (r = 0.37). The dead heart (DH) damage at the vegetative stage over the years was less than 1% in six lines/varieties, while at the panicle initiation stage, seven lines/varieties showed whitehead (WH) damage ranging from 1.29 to 1.92%. A highly significant correlation was observed between plant height and per cent DH and WH at the vegetative (r = 0.73) and panicle initiation stages (r = 0.81). Such a relationship was not observed between leaf width and stemborer infestation at both stages. Two lines, viz. IR 59 547-235-3-3 and SPR 85 163-5-1-2-4, were resistant to the WBPH under glasshouse screening, whereas 20 lines were moderately resistant and the remaining lines were susceptible.

Root-knot nematodes (RKN) are serious pests of tomato production in Kenya. Accurate identification of the plant parasitic nematodes is important for their effective management. A study conducted to assess their prevalence and identify RKN occurring on tomatoes in Central Kenya showed infestation of the crop in all the three districts. Of the total sampled plants (N = 900), the RKN infestation level ranged from 28 to 62%. RKN disease severity ranged from 2.5 to 5.3 in all the locations. Meloidogyne incognita,M. javanica and M. arenaria were the only species found infesting tomatoes in these areas. Female nematodes sampled from the symptomatic root system that had root galls characteristic of RKN were analysed by isozyme phenotypes of esterase (EST) and malate dehydrogenase (MDH). EST phenotype was polymorphic and enabled identification of the three different species, while MDH was monomorphic. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism with region between mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit II and large subunit ribosomal RNA (mtDNA COII-LSUrRNA) using HinfI showed that all isolates of M. incognita could be digested into three restriction fragments of about 1300, 400 and 100 bp, except for one species that showed an additional restriction site, giving four fragments of 900, 420, 380 and 100 bp. The 1800 bp PCR product of M. javanica was not digested by HinfI. Meloidogyne arenaria (EST phenotype A1) PCR product was digested into two restriction fragments of about 1700 and 100 bp, while M. arenaria (EST phenotype A2) had two restriction fragments at 1100 and 100 bp.

Functional response of all instars, adult males and females of the ladybird Coccinella septempunctata L. was studied against two species of aphids, namely Lipaphis erysimi (Kalt.) and Brevicoryne brassicae L., infesting mustard and cabbage crops, respectively. The predatory stages of C. septempunctata exhibited a type II response on both the prey species. The attack rate was highest (0.0192) with the lowest handling time (7.9 min) when the adult female consumed L. erysimi. There was a significant difference in the predicted values of consumption of L. erysimi by fourth instars, adult males and females compared with those of B. brassicae, indicating that the former prey is preferred over the latter one. The adult females prey upon significantly more numbers of aphids than the adult males.

A study to determine the species richness and spatial distribution of five meliponine bee species in three different habitats in the Kakamega forest was undertaken for the first time. Two forest (indigenous and mixed indigenous) and two grassland (with Eucalyptus spp. trees and indigenous trees) types, along with homesteads (in the vicinity of mixed indigenous forest and indigenous forest, respectively), were surveyed. Line transect methods were used in the nest survey in each habitat. The highest number of species was recorded in the indigenous forest, while no nest was discovered in the grassland with Eucalyptus spp. trees. The mean number of nests per transect was higher in homesteads followed by the indigenous forest. The nesting pattern of almost all species nesting in the indigenous forest, mixed indigenous forest (Meliponula bocandei [Spinola]) and grassland with indigenous tree species (Meliponula ferruginea [Lepeletier] reddish brown) was dispersed. The nesting pattern of M. ferruginea (reddish brown) and Hypotrigona gribodoi (Magretti) changed from a dispersed and random pattern, respectively, to a clumped nesting pattern when nesting in homesteads. The degree of nest clustering was low for M. ferruginea (reddish brown) and high for H. gribodoi. Differences in average nearest-neighbour distance were observed within species nesting in a dispersed or clumped pattern. This study reveals that habitat type in the Kakamega forest influences the species richness and nesting pattern of the five stingless bee species.

Despite the continuous use of synthetic insecticides during the last two decades, the tea mosquito bug Helopeltis theivora Waterhouse still exists as the most destructive pest of tea in North East India. The susceptibility levels of the female sucking bug collected from conventional (synthetic insecticide treated: Terai and Dooars plain regions) and organic (synthetic insecticide untreated: low-altitude Darjeeling region) tea plantations of the northern part of West Bengal to two synthetic insecticides, quinalphos and cypermethrin, and the activity of three principal detoxifying enzymes were assayed. Compared with the susceptible Darjeeling population, the Terai and Dooars populations showed a resistance factor at the lethal concentrations for 50% level ranging from 547- to 2680.87-fold and from 3810- to 7480-fold for quinalphos and cypermethrin, respectively. General esterases (GEs), glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) and cytochrome P450-mediated mono-oxygenases (CYPs) also showed an increased activity in the Terai and Dooars populations compared with those from Darjeeling. Defence enzyme activity was enhanced by 15.4- and 17.6-fold for GEs, 1.8- and 1.9-fold for GSTs and 2.1- and 2.4-fold for CYPs in the synthetic insecticide-treated H. theivora populations when compared with the untreated Darjeeling populations. Electrophoretic analysis for GEs showed a higher level of expression for esterase I–VI isozymes in the Terai and Dooars populations when compared with that in the Darjeeling populations. This study reveals a reduced efficacy of quinalphos and cypermethrin against field populations of H. theivora, possibly due to enhanced activities of GEs, GSTs and CYPs. The findings may be used in developing integrated resistance management strategies that can help in the effective control of this major tea pest.

To determine species composition of fruit flies on six cultivated varieties of citrus (Late Valencia orange, Pineapple orange, Ovaleto, Mediterranean sweet lemon, Satsuma tangerine and Ortanique orange), a study was conducted at the Agricultural Research Centre, Kade, Ghana. Improvised Lynfield baited traps (methyl eugenol (ME) and citrus juice (CJ)) and McPhail baited traps (trimedlure (TML)) were used. Ripe infested fruits from the selected varieties were also collected and incubated. Tephritid fruit fly species from trapping were identified as Bactrocerainvadens Drew, Tsuruta & White, Bactroceracucurbitae (Coquillet), Ceratitisditissima Munro, C. anonae Graham, C. capitata (Wiedemann), C. bremii Guerin-Meneville, Dacusbivittatus (Bigot), D. punctatifrons Karsch and Trirhithrum Bezzi. A total of 35,247 fruit flies were collected from the traps, with densities of 10.38, 1.00 and 0.27 flies/trap/day for ME, CJ and TML traps, respectively. All incubated fruit varieties showed co-habitation of three different species (C. ditissima, C. anonae and B. invadens) in each of them. In addition, one Dacus vertebratus was obtained from dropped Late Valencia fruits. Moreover, three individual Fopius caudatus (Szèpligeti) parasitoids were recorded from the infested incubated fruits. Ranking of the different fruit fly species from infested incubated host fruits was as follows: C. ditissima (476) >C. anonae (74) > B. invadens (71) and D. vertebratus (1). Competitive ability among the invasive flies in their process to infest the six citrus varieties was observed. These findings could serve as a useful starting point for the development of a reliable catalogue of host diversity, fruit fly species diversity and associated natural enemy records in Ghana.

A participatory project was conducted with small-scale coffee growers from Quindío Department, Colombia. In 34 coffee lots in three municipalities, growers implemented an integrated management programme against the coffee berry borer (CBB) Hypothenemus hampei Ferrari, based on improved cultural harvesting and sanitation practices (to remove breeding habitats) and releases of exotic parasitoids. Growers released over 10 million Cephalonomia stephanoderis and 5 million Prorops nasuta (both Hymenoptera: Bethylidae) over 2 years. Populations of the CBB declined from a range of 7–14% infested berries (Quimbaya), 10–13% (Montenegro) and 15–48% (Buenavista) prior to the integrated pest management programme, to an average of 2.1 ± 0.2% infested berries in Químbaya, 3.5 ± 0.2% in Montenegro and 2.8 ± 2.1% in Buenavista, over the following 25 months. Damage to parchment coffee similarly declined during this period. Six months after the final release of parasitoids had been made, we found both parasitoid species established in all three municipalities. However, P. nasuta were recovered more frequently (in 71.4% of lots where they were previously released) compared with C. stephanoderis (recovered in 30.8% of release lots). Average parasitism rates remained low, i.e. 3.7% for P. nasuta and 2.9% for C. stephanoderis. This low rate was probably due to the frequent manual removal of mature berries containing developing parasitoid larvae. In addition, the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana was observed on average on 9.5% adult CBB in Montenegro, compared with mean infection rates of 4.3 and 4.4% in Quimbaya and Buenavista, respectively. Cultural harvesting and sanitation is an important component of CBB control, although it may limit the impact of the pest's parasitoids.

Powdered maize cobs were tested as an alternative for pesticide use in stored maize. Five doses (2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 g/250 g seed) of powdered maize cobs applied at particle sizes of 1.4 and 0.4 mm diameter were compared with actellic powder against Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky for 120 days. Mortality and survival data showed that cob powders did not act as fumigant but exerted a potent inhibition of progeny on direct contact with S. zeamais adults. The particle size of powdered cobs had no effect on maize damage and losses. At doses equal to or higher than 6 g powdered maize cobs/250 g grain maize, i.e. 2.4% (w/w), damage to grain was < 5% and weight losses < 1%. The protection offered at the highest dose was comparable to the pesticide control. The use of powdered maize cobs is discussed as a natural alternative to synthetic pesticides for protection of maize against S. zeamais.

Pebrine caused by Nosema bombycis in the silkworm Bombyx mori L. causes severe economic loss to the sericulture industry. Several species of microsporidia and strains of N. bombycis have been isolated from infected silkworms. The study of the developmental stages of any parasite is important, as it leads to the identification of stages that may be susceptible to control measures. For this study, five microsporidian isolates from B. mori were collected from five different locations in West Bengal, India and a study of the developmental stages from mid-gut smears and histological techniques was undertaken. The observations of mid-gut smears and histological specimens revealed differences in the morphometry and duration of different developmental stages of the parasites.

Satureja hortensis and Zataria multiflora (Lamiaceae) essential oils were tested on Callosobruchus maculatus (Fabricius) to evaluate their effects on oviposition deterrence, egg hatching and mortality of adults. To obtain essential oils, dry leaves were subjected to hydrodistillation using a modified Clevenger-type apparatus. The experiments were conducted at 25 ± 1°C and 65 ± 5% relative humidity in dark conditions with five replications for each essential oil. When concentrations of both essential oils were higher, the insecticidal effect on eggs and adults increased and oviposition was more deterred. At the highest concentration (60 μl/l air) of S. hortensis and Z. multiflora essential oils, 91.2 and 85.4% of adults were killed, respectively. There were no significant differences in oviposition deterrence between the two essential oils. At the highest concentration (4.3 μl/l air) of S. hortensis and Z. multiflora essential oils, egg mortality was 94.5 and 77.3%, respectively. Probit analysis revealed LC50 for adults and eggs of C. maculatus of 1.50 and 1.13 μl/l air, respectively, for the S. hortensis essential oil and 1.76 and 2.23 μl/l air, respectively, for the Z. multiflora essential oil. The results suggest that the essential oils of these aromatic plants can be used as botanical fumigants to protect grains against C. maculatus.

A new genus and a new species of the parasitoid wasp, Napo townsendi (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Euphorinae: Dinocampini), is described from the Yanayacu Biological Station in Napo Province, Ecuador. The new genus and species is diagnosed and compared with the most closely related genus Betelgeuse Shaw and other Dinocampini. While first discovered by yellow bowl and Malaise trapping, it has more recently been discovered that males of N. townsendi can be found preferentially perching on the leaves of seedlings of the asteraceous tree Dendrophorbium lloense (Hieron) C. Jeffrey.

Upsurges in the populations of the migratory locust Locusta migratoria (L.) occurred in July 2011 at the airport and in sugarcane fields on Shimoji Island, Okinawa, Japan. In sugarcane fields and pathways, dark-coloured nymphs at early instars marched and infested sugarcane leaves. The number of locusts was estimated as approximately 1.4 million. After prompt control by spraying insecticides, the locust populations decreased remarkably in size at the airport and in sugarcane fields. The locust populations at the airport restored gradually and dark-coloured nymphs similar in appearance to typical gregarious forms were found marching on paved roads at the end of August. Insecticides were sprayed again in early September over those areas at the airport where nymphs were abundant. The locust populations rapidly declined and only a few locusts were observed thereafter on the island before winter. These observations indicate the importance of constant monitoring and prompt action for the control of locusts. The seasonal life cycle of this locust species on this island was studied by regularly sampling the locusts in the field, which revealed that this locust species produces three generations per year with different overwintering stages.

Inhibition of okra growth in response to flea beetle injury was studied in both the screen house and field. In the screen house or field, 0, 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40 pairs of Podagrica uniforma (Jacoby), representing six treatments, were introduced into different cages containing five 3-week-old okra plants, replicated three times. Data were collected on the number of flowers and branches, plant height, stem girth and functional leaf area in both experiments. With increasing densities of P. uniforma, days to 50% flowering and fruit initiation were prolonged by 1–13 days and 2–15 days, respectively. The beetle did not exhibit florivory but caused distortion of okra fruits, i.e. bending of fruit tips at the point of flea beetle-induced damage. From the 20-pair level (eight beetles per plant), there were significant reductions in plant height (up to 50%) and stem girth (up to 43%) in both the screen house and field. The number of distorted fruits showing bent tips was significantly higher relative to the control from the 5-pair level, and was more than 90% at the 40-pair level. Regression analysis indicated that plant height was a linear function of flea beetle population. Third-degree polynomial models best described the relationship between insect density and the number of bent fruits. χ2 analysis showed that these models derived from the screen house data were not significantly different from the field data models.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) has become an important health problem in Sri Lanka. Dickwella Divisional Secretariat Division (DSD) located in southern Sri Lanka has been identified as a highly endemic focus for CL. However, to date, the potential sandfly vectors of the Leishmania parasite causing CL have not been elucidated in this focus. This study aimed to determine the species composition and population dynamics of sandflies prevalent at three sampling stations representing different ecological conditions in two high-risk areas in Dickwella DSD, over a period of 27 consecutive weeks. Resting sandflies (i.e. indoor collection) were collected from the lavatories of human households using Castro aspirators at weekly intervals. In addition, cattle-baited traps were deployed at bi-weekly intervals to capture foraging sandflies (outdoor collection). Sergentomyia zeylanica Annandale was found to be the only sandfly species and hence was considered as the potential vector of the Leishmania parasite that causes CL. As a whole, 84 and 96% of the sampling occasions were positive for resting and foraging sandflies, respectively. Seventy-six per cent of the lavatories sampled contained sandflies regardless of the sampling station. Altogether, 34,481 sandflies were captured from lavatories, whereas 691 were collected in cattle-baited traps. The ecological habitat, which comprised dense vegetation and a stagnant water body, seemed to be highly productive for this sandfly species. However, dryness and heavy rains negatively affected its population density. The sex ratio of the sandflies was male-biased at 1:2 (females:males). The findings of this study suggested that the management strategies of S. zeylanica could be targeted on lavatories especially after moderate rains.
