Photoperiod as extrinsic factor controlling the population in the American bollworm, Heliothis armigera (Hub.)

Abstract

Growth and reproduction in Heliothis armigera is known to be controlled by temperature, relative humidity and host plants. Photoperiod was also found to be an important extrinsic factor regulating the different biological aspects of H. armigera. The effect of five alternating light and dark cycles on the adult as well as on the immature stages of this pest was studied at 25 ± 2°C.

The results obtained showed that the photoperiod regimes tested on the adult stage has a high significant effect on reproduction and longevity. Also 16 hr photoperiod was the most suitable condition for maximum egg deposition and maximum percentage of egg hatching.

The immature photoperiod regimes had a high significant effect on the larval duration, pupal weight and percentage of emergence of adults, but had no effect on the pupal duration. Combined effect of immature and adult photoperiod regimes affected greatly the fecundity and longevity of the adults.

Résumé

Le developpement et la reproduction vis a vis de Heliothis armigera est connu d'être controle par la temperature, l'humidité relative et le support de plantes.

La photoperiode a été egalement considerée comme facteur exterieur essential pour regulariser les differents aspects biologiques de H. armigera. L'affet de cinq cycles alternatifs de lumière et obscurité sur l'insecte imago aussi bien que sur les étapes d'immaturite ont ete etudies a 25 ± 2°C sur l'insecte. Les resultats obtenus ont prouve que le système de la photoperiode experimente sur les etapes imago ont un effet considerable sur la reproduction et la durée de la vie et que 16 heures d'une photoperiode sont les conditions les plus favorables pour donner le pourcentages maximum de la deposition des oeufs ainsi que leur eclosion.

La periode immaturée vis à vis du système photo periode a eu l'effet le plus considerable pour la durée de la vie de la larvae le poids de la nymphe et le pourcentage de son emergence à la vie de l'imago, elle n'a aueun effet sur. la durée de la vie de la nymphe.

Le système de la photoperiode affecte considerablement la fecondité et la duree de la vie de l'imago et de l'immaturité à la fois.
