Formulation of a locust lotion concentrate for grasshopper control

Abstract

An emulsion concentrate (locust lotion) containing 20% v/v neem oil and 40% w/v aqueous extract of Tetrapleura tetraptera L. was found to be most stable when subjected to viscoslty measurement, creaming rate determination, droplet size analysis and accelerated stability tests. The emulsion supported the growth of microorganisms which was prevented by a combination of 0.2% w/v methylparaben and 0.1% w/v propylparaben. Octylgallate, 0.1% w/v was added as an antioxkiant to prevent the oxidation of neem oil in the locust lotion concentrate. The recommended use concentration for protection ot cassava Manihotesculenta Crantz from damage by grasshopper Zonocerus variegatus L. was 1.8–2.2%. At 2.5%, locust lotion was phytotoxic to cassava.

Résumé

Nons avons constaté qu'un concentre1 d'emulsion (lotion anti-criquet) contenant 20% v/v d'huile de neem et 40% w/v d'extrait equeux de Tetrapleura tetraptera L. reste très stable même lorsqu'il est soumis à des mensurations de viscosité, à la détermination du taux de crémage, à l'analyse des dimensions d'une gouttelette ainsi qu'a des tests de stabilité accélereé. L'ftnulsion a facilité le développement de micro-organismes, processus bloqué par une combinaison de 0,2 % w/ v de methylparabène et de 0.1% w/v de propylparabène. Nons avons introduit 0.1% w/v d'octylgallate comme anteoxydant afin d'empecher l'oxydation de l'huile de neem dans le concentré de lotion anti-criquet. La concentration recommandée pour la protection du manioc Manihot esculenta Crantzcontre des dommages causé par ks criquet Zojiocenu variegatus L. se situe entre 1,8 et 2,2%. A 2,5% la lotion anti-criquet devient phyto-toxique un manioc.
