Population Ecology of Culicoides peliliouensis Tok. in The Hooghly Estuary, Sagar Island, India

Abstract

Occurrence, abundance and seasonal fluctuations of Culicoides peliliouensis in the mud and sand flats of Hooghly estuary were studied in relation to some important environmental parameters (air temperature, soil temperature, soil moisture, rainfall, salinity, dissolved oxygen and pH of interstitial water, organic carbon, available phosphorus, percentage of sand, silt and clay of soil) at three stations in and around Sagar Island during July 1982 to June 1984. They were more or less found throughout the year, withmaximum abundance during postmonsoon and minimum during premonsoon. Several statistical analyses have been computed to study the relation between population of C. peliliouensis and all ecological parameters. Results of ANOVA indicate that almost all ecological parameters varied significantly over months, stations and years, whereas the population of C. peliliouensis varied significantly only over months and stations. Soil temperature, rainfall, organic carbon and available phosphorus appear to be the major factors controlling their distribution in the intertidal habitat as evident from correlation coefficient analysis. Multiple regression analysis shows that the combined effect of all parameters is positively significant at all the stations.

Résumé

L'occurrence, l'abondance et la fluction saisonnaire de Culicoides peliliouensis Tok. dans la boue et la plaine de sable a l'estuaire de Hooghly a été étudie par rapport à quelque paramètres du milieu (la température de l'aire, la température de sol, l'humidite de sol, la pluie, la salinité, l'oxygene dessolu et pH de l'eau interstitile, le carbone organique, le phosphore utilisable, le pourcentage du sol, la vase et l'argile) a trois places autour de l'île de Sagar pendent Juillet 1982 a Juin 1984. On les a trouvé plus au moins toute l'année. Leur abondance étaient maximum pendent la pestmousson et menimum pendant la premousson. On a fait des calculs de statistique pour étudier le rapport entre la population de C. peliliouensis avec tout les paramètres du milieu, Les résultats de l'analyse de variance montre que presque tout les paramètres écologicals varient significament avec des mois, la place et l'année. La population de C. peliliouensis varie significament avec le mois et la place seulement. La température du sol, la pluie, le carbone organique et le phosphore utilisable parrient les facteur majeurs qui controlent leur distribution dans la marée comme on le voit par l'analyse de coéfficient de correlation. L'analyse de la régression multiple montre que l'effet combine de tout les paramètres du milieu est significant positivement à toutes les places.
