The kidneys are the body's main organs of excretion. They are, however, subject to serious, progressive, and irreversible deterioration, and as a result, to a decreased ability to extract poisonous wastes and excess fluids from the blood. Almost invariably, this condition proceeds to the point where it is termed end-stage renal failure (ESRF). As the name suggests, ESRF is fatal.
